“I am not an American,” Mark Twain (1835—1910) once said. “I am the American.”
He had good reason to say so. A Nobel winner in literature, US playwright Eugene O’Neill called him “the true father of American literature”. “Mark Twain is all of our grandfather,” agreed William Faulkner, another Nobel winner.
Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media often praise him. But when you actually take the time to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was first published 140 years ago, you will find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever have imagined.
The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical—a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure.
Most importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of the US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses Tom to make fun of its old traditions.
Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical (批评的) points about the culture and the society of the US at the time. That’s why he is so beloved in the US—he wasn’t afraid to express his opinions, and he did so clearly.
For instance, Twain didn’t like US wars abroad, and he wrote openly about it in a newspaper article in 1900. He also believed strongly in women’s right to vote in elections (选举) and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
“Tom was a glittering hero once more—the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” Twain wrote in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. But he could just as well have been describing himself.
33. Why are two Nobel winners mentioned at the beginning
A. To show they were as successful as Mark Twain.
B. To show their close relationship with Mark Twain.
C. To show how American literature developed.
D. To show Mark Twain’s influence.
34. What is most special about the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
A. It describes how a young boy grows up.
B. It introduces the famous Mississippi River.
C It presents a magical idea of childhood.
D. It cleverly makes fun of the US culture.
35. How does the writer show Twain was fearless to voice his opinions
A. By giving a speech. B. By showing numbers.
C. By giving examples. D. By using sentences from his book.
36. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph
A. Mark Twain was very much like Tom.
B. Mark Twain was a hero in American literature.
C. Mark Twain should be more confident in himself.
D Mark Twain made a wonderful description of Tom.

When you are in an exam, you may feel a little bit nervous. You may start to sweat and grow short of breath. You may even become so fearful or worried that you can’t focus or think. This is known as test anxiety, which can stop you in your thinking process. It is a kind of feeling caused by too much stress.
Stress causes different levels of anxiety. Good stress causes just enough worry to get you to focus on a task and do it well. Bad stress, however, does just the opposite. Instead of helping you to focus, bad stress may stop you from thinking or focusing clearly. This stress response hurts more than it helps. So, to do well in exams, you’d better learn how to deal with anxiety in different ways.
The first step is to keep good stress from turning into bad stress. The best way to do this is to get your mind and your body prepared. Instead of treating a test as a big challenge, you can use it as a motivator to push you to learn better. Prepare yourself by making sure you understand what you will be tested on. You can not do well in exams unless you fully understand the knowledge you have learned. And don’t forget to keep your body full of energy by having enough sleep. These will help you do well.
The next step is to know about your body and realize the signs of anxiety before bad stress happens. One way is to place yourself in a “mental room” and check yourself as if watching from above. Being aware of your own stress can help you find out how to keep yourself from experiencing increased anxiety.
When bad stress really comes to you, the key is to relax yourself. If you find yourself highly nervous, take a moment to step back. Stop and close your eyes. Take deep breaths and think of a peaceful place to calm yourself down. As you relax, remind yourself that you have prepared and that all will be fine.
Remember, we all experience anxiety at times. Whether you’re taking a test, performing, or competing, you can use the tips above to keep cool. They will help you be your best for the test and for any other challenges you face.
37. What can we learn about stress
A. Too much sweat causes stress.
B. Stress helps people focus on a task.
C. A reasonable amount of worry helps people do well.
D. Stress makes people too nervous to work on a task.
38. Which would the writer probably agree on
A. Keep away from either good or bad stress.
B. Challenge your mind with tasks to become smarter.
C. Focus little on your physical signs of worries.
D. Relaxing can be a good medicine for bad stress.
39. If you are short of breath in an exam, what can you do
A. Take a step back from your seat.
B. Close your eyes and sleep for a while.
C. Find a peaceful place to sit back and relax.
D. Tell yourself that you have prepared well.
40. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To make students aware of the risks of stress.
B. To ask students to tell good stress from bad stress.
C. To offer advice on how to deal with stress in exams.
D. To remind students that stress is common in our life.

Many people travel to different places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines offer passengers food. ____41____
To deal with this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. ____42____ However, the food itself is not the main reason. According to a scientific research, part of the reason is that at high altitude (海拔) we cannot taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. ____43____ So our taste buds become senseless. The sad fact, however, is that our noses don’t know it. ____44____ They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.
Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.
____45____ Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure. So making food taste good is still hard for them.
A. Though scientists try their best, things are not as easy as they thought.
B. They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers.
C. But it is common that the food taste is considered to be bad.
D. All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad.

Belinda ran to the radio. She shouted into it so loudly that I had to cover all my four ears. “Mummy! Daddy! I’m on an awful spaceship full of purple people! Come and find me now!”
“Poor Belinda!” my sister came and said. “Her parents must be missing her.”
“Huh!” I snorted (发出哼声).“Missing her You’re joking! Who would want such a bossy kid back They probably lost her on purpose.”
Belinda’s face clouded. I thought she was going to shout again, but she didn’t. Instead, something very strange happened-her eyes began to water!
“Oh, help!” said Roa. “Is she dying ”
I felt terrible. “Don’t die, Belinda! I didn’t mean it.”
Then Belinda opened her mouth wide and shouted, “What if it’s true What if they’ve gone away and left me here forever ”
We were all so busy comforting Belinda that we didn’t notice the soft knock of a ship landing outside. We didn’t see two tall people come out of it until Belinda ran out in excitement.
“Mummy! Daddy!”
Belinda’s parents were even uglier than she was, but they looked polite. “Hello, dear,” the female said. “We’re sorry we kept you waiting. We’ve come a long way from the Earth.”
We smiled as the three of them boarded their spaceship. “Goodbye!” shouted Belinda. “Goodbye! Thanks for taking care of our baby girl!” said her father.
None of us answered. We waved cheerfully as the ship took off and went far away into the stars.
