When I was a teenage boy, I helped out at my parents’ furniture store in a charming New England town. The store was known for its wide range of products. One summer holiday, I was busy assisting customers to find what they needed. I always greeted them warmly at the entrance, and customers appreciated it as excellent service. I also assisted them to carry heavy things to their cars, but my parents strictly instructed me not to accept tips or anything else.
One day, an elderly lady visited the store. At first sight, I was drawn to her. She was neatly (整洁地) dressed and had a graceful presence, looking polite and friendly. She lived in a senior citizen apartment nearby and wanted to buy some chairs for her garden. After a short search, I found some chairs that met her needs. She bought two chairs and asked if I could help send them to her home just a stone’s throw away. Recognizing her old age, I agreed and carried the chairs to her building.
Upon arrival, she welcomed me warmly and showed me where to place the chairs. Before I could thank her for shopping in my parents’ store, she shocked me by placing a handful of candy in my hand. Then, to my amazement, she gave me an educational book. I politely rejected it, explaining that I couldn’t accept any presents. However, she put the book in my hand and said with a smile, “If your parents don’t want you to have this, just don’t tell them. Let me tell them instead.” We both laughed, and I thanked her sincerely. I decided to follow her advice, and she told my parents that she had given me a book as a reward for my hard work. With the book, I learned a lot and started my lifelong love for reading.
Reflecting on this experience, I often think of the elderly lady and hope she will live a joyful life surrounded by loved ones forever. Her generosity and humor have left a lasting impression on me.

When young children’s behavior becomes challenging, many parents turn to threats. Many parents threatened to leave an activity or place, or not get snacks. “Discipline (管教) helps young children learn what behaviors are safe and proper and can play an important role in helping them learn the difference between right and wrong,” said Susan Woolford, M. D. “Empty threats, however, destroy trust and aren’t usually effective.”
Most parents surveyed reported getting input about discipline strategies from several sources, turning to the child’ s other parent, talking with friends or using parenting books, articles and social media. Meanwhile, less than a fifth of parents have discussed discipline with a healthcare provider and one in eight parents say they haven’t thought about their discipline strategies. Some parents surveyed admitted using discipline strategies that aren’t recommended by experts, with two in five sometimes spanking (打屁股).
“Discipline strategies should be proper for the child’s age and developmental level.” Woolford said. For children aged one to two, distraction (分散注意力) and redirection are often most effective, noting that children this young are exploring their environment and willful misbehavior is quite few. But after age two, children understand their actions can cause a reaction from others and may increasingly test that out. Parents of children aged three to five surveyed were more likely to use warnings, speak firmly, and give timeouts.
During these preschool ages, parents should let them know what their misbehavior will lead to. For instance, if a child throws a drink out of anger, a proper punishment would be to have them clean up the mess while an unrelated punishment will be less effective. Reactions should be immediate, so the child understands the connection with their misbehavior.
As children grow, they respond differently to various discipline methods, so parents should adapt their strategies and stay open to new approaches. “Balancing correction with positive strengthening—like praise and rewards—helps children build self-respect while learning from their mistakes.” Woolford said.
28.What will threatening bring to kids according to Susan Woolford
A.Less belief in parents. B.More improper behaviors.
C.Unwillingness to accept gifts. D.Inability to tell right from wrong.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Effective threats to children. B.Situations of discipline strategies.
C.Various methods of parenting. D.Reasons for children’s misbehavior.
30.What should parents do with the misbehavior of children aged 3 to 5
A.Reason with them patiently and seriously.
B.Reflect on the causes of their mistakes.
C.Forgive them for their childish actions.
D.Punish them immediately and properly.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Praise and rewards ensure self-respect.
B.Disciplining children is a flexible process.
C.Parenting becomes easier as children grow.
D.Correcting mistakes is a new parenting approach.

Over the last decade, health insurance companies have started using AI algorithms (算法) to decide whether they will pay for treatments your doctor recommends. This is different from the AI doctors use for diagnosis (诊断) in that insurance AI focuses only on coverage and cost.
One of the most common examples is with prior authorization. Before your doctor can give you certain care, they must get the insurer’s approval for payment. The AI checks if the treatment is considered medically necessary and covered by your plan. It can limit the amount of care, like how many days you can stay in the hospital after an operation. If the insurance company refuses coverage for a treatment your doctor says you need, you’ll face tough choices: appeal the decision (a slow process that rarely works), accept different treatment, or pay the very high cost yourself.
Insurers argue these algorithms help make decisions quickly and safely, avoiding unnecessary treatments. However, there is concern that they are often used to delay or deny effective care simply to save money. The systems analyze patient records, but insurers keep exactly how the AI makes its decisions completely secret. This secrecy is especially worrying because if an AI wrongly refuses a claim very fast, the patient might get sicker or even die during the long appeal process.
Unlike medical AI tools reviewed by government agencies, these algorithms are mostly unregulated. Their inner workings are guarded as trade secrets. While some recent rules require insurers to consider individual patient needs, companies can still largely set their own standards without outside checks.
Some places have proposed laws demanding doctor oversight of these algorithms. However, most proposed laws still give insurers too much power to define medical necessity and don’t require independent testing for safety and fairness before the AI is used. Experts argue government oversight is essential. The agency that reviews medical AI could potentially take on this role. In the meantime, government regulators should require independent testing of insurance AI for accuracy and fairness. Efforts to regulate this insurance AI are beginning, but much stronger action is still needed.
32.What is the common use of AI algorithms used by insurance companies
A.Assisting doctors in diagnosing patients.
B.Approving the treatment given by doctors.
C.Providing care services for some patients.
D.Reducing administrative costs for hospitals.
33.How do insurers handle the decision-making process of their AI algorithms
A.They provide some effective solutions. B.They help governments to regulate it.
C.They keep it private as trade secrets. D.They require doctors to oversee.
34.What problem was mentioned about the AI algorithms in paragraph 4
A.It lacked regulation in most cases. B.It didn’t work perfectly most of the time.
C.It hardly considered patients’ needs. D.It was equipped with different standards.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Regulatory Challenges and Solutions for Medical AI
B.The Rise of AI Algorithms in Health Insurance Companies
C.Insurance AI Algorithms: Issues and the Need for Regulation
D.How AI-Driven Insurance Decisions Affect Patient Choices

In some US states, gym class is changing. Many schools are focusing on getting students ready for life after high school. They are looking for ways to leave even the least athletic kids with the will and skills to keep moving. For gym teachers, that means less focus on who is best at a sport. It means less rope climbing and dodgeball (躲避球). 36
A New Model
In one New York school district, there is no “gym” class. 37 They include dance, self-defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating.
“We want our kids…, to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb. He manages the physical education, or PE, program for the Victor, New York, school district.
A US law passed in 2015 increased the importance of health and fitness in education. It also gave more funding (资金) to PE programs.
Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. 38 Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.
Outside the Gym
Tracy Krause teaches PE in Washington State. For a few years, she has taken students fly-fishing and rock climbing. 39 It combines PE, English, and science into one program. “We want kids to leave with a plan for the future,” Krause said. “I think the same needs to be true about their health.”
Lifelong Skills
In Washington, D. C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth-and seventh- graders learn parkour (跑酷). Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth-graders learn how to read a compass. High schoolers swim. 40
Teachers hope to keep students liking, not hating, PE. That means finding sports or activities they enjoy.
A.They are also cutting back on team sports.
B.It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.
C.Other schools are now following his program.
D.Instead there is a list of different fitness classes.
E.The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.
F.She is part of her school’s “Outdoor Academy” program.
G.Kids who are not as athletic sometimes hate playing team sports.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had been swimming competitively for five years but after such a long time, I was ready to quit. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.
One summer’s day, the day before a big swim meeting, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’ Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meeting tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear ” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”
The next day we arrived at the swim meeting late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I should be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew she expected me to take part.
As I mounted (登上) the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were all here to do just one thing — beat me. All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head, “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.” “Yes, Grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself.

第二节(满分25分)
The match began! I swam harder than I had ever swum before. After the first turn, I was surprised to find that I had a half-body length lead over other girls. However, they soon sped up and narrowed the gap. Halfway through the race, the girl to my left almost drew level with me, while I already began to feel so tired. At that moment, the powerful words of my grandma echoed again in my ears, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.” I waved my arms and legs to keep swimming and gathered every bit of strength to swim the last 50 meters. As soon as I touched the wall, I looked up at the screen, waiting anxiously for the result.
It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. I saw my time in the screen but could hardly believe it-mine was at the top of the list I my coach ran to me and hugged me tightly when I got out of the water. Narrow victory as it was, I did win my first real trophy that day. Everything felt like a dream as I stood on the winner’s podium, weeping tears of joy. Back at home, I delightedly replaced the “Honorable Mention” on my shelf with the new trophy. It dawned on me that if you don’t give up, anything is possible.
