English Names and Chinese NamesEnglish names are not the same as Chinese names. In England, people have two main names: first name and last name. The last name is the family name. For example, if a man’s name is John Smith, “John” is his first name and “Smith” is his last name. People can call him John or Mr Smith. Sometimes, English family names come from colours, like “Brown”, “White” and “Black”.
In China, the family name comes first. My name is Wang Tao. “Wang” is my family name and “Tao” is my given name. People can call me Tao or Mr Wang. We don’t use colour words as family names very often.
