完形填空(cloze test)是由美国语言学家 Wilson L. Tayloy于1953年首次提出和设计的，最初的名字叫“完形程序”(cloze procedure)，其理论依据是格式塔心理学 (Gestalt Psychology)。格式塔心理学派认为，人的大脑在认识事物时，往往会不自觉地把事物当成一个整体，无意识地自动地把缺失部分补全，补全的质量反映了人们对事物的认知水平，补全的质量越高，说明认知水平越高，反之越低。根据该理论，Taylor在一篇语义完整的语篇中挖空若干，然后让测试者把它补全。如果测试者能较好地补全缺失的词，则说明他的语言能力较强；反之，则说明他的语能力较弱。
完形填空的本质是语篇，所以对完形填空的研究要建立在语篇的基础上。从本质上说，学生做完形填空的过程就是语篇建构的一种体现形式，旨在考查学生在英语语篇生成的过程中从意图性、信息性、衔接、连贯、互文性、语境性和可接受性等7个方面进行阅读、推理，确定各个题目的正确选项，从而使整段文字成为一个能体现一定的交际意图、信息完整、逻辑连贯、运用恰当衔接手段、偶尔涉及当前语篇与其他关联语篇之间的互文关系、符合当前交际环境(语境）、内容和语言均可以接受的完整语篇。
本人统计了2015年至2024年十年间江西省考过的语篇类型，发现记叙文是最常考的语篇类型，考查了7次；夹叙夹议文考查了2次；说明文考查了1次。没有考查过议论文和应用文。具体内容如下表：

该命题规律，给高中完形填空的教学带来了一定的启示：
首先，在平时的完形填空教学中，教师应该重点讲解记叙文的特点，让学生熟练掌握记叙文的阅读技巧。教师可以引领学生充分利用“5个W+H”模式，即什么原因(why)，谁(who)在什么时间(when)什么地点(where)通过什么方式(how)干了什么事(what)，结果怎么样？”快速理清文章的脉络和主旨大意。理清文章的主旨大意后，再带着主旨大意去细读全文，利用相关思维线索补填具体信息，之后通过人物的思想变化体验文中情感因素，这样就能大大提高做题的正确率和效率。以上启示也是本节课的基本教学思路。
