当s在/t/后时,与/t/一起读作/ts/。

以s,sh,ch,x结尾的词在词尾加-es时,读作/ z/。
如:bus/b s/ → buses/ b s z/
match/m t /→ matches/m t z/
以“辅音字母+y”结尾的单词,复数es的发音也为/iz/。但以“元音字母+y”结尾的单词,不适用于此规则(如boy/b /→boys/b z/)。

英语单词有单音节词、双音节词和多音节词之分。含有一个响亮音素的声音片断叫作一个音节。英语里的元音都是响亮的音素。由一个音节构成的词叫单音节词。由两个或两个以上音节构成的词称为双音节词或多音节词。对于双音节词或多音节词,有的音节须读得重些,叫作重读音节;有的音节要读得轻些,叫作非重读音节。重读音节用重读符号“ ”标出。

(1)单音节词不需要标重读符号,如:cat /k t/、dad /d d/、desk /desk/。
(2)双音节词的重音一般落在第一个音节上,如:jacket / d k t/、carrot / k r t/、sweater / swet (r)/。
(3)少数双音节词的重音落在第二个音节上,如:about / ba t/、mistake /m ste k/、guitar /ɡ tɑ /。
