Patricia Bath was an excellent doctor who invented the Laserphaco Probe (激光除白内障手术仪). She was born on November 4, 1942 in New York. Her parents encouraged Patricia to pursue academic interests. Her father, a former Merchant Marine and an occasional newspaper writer, taught Patricia about the wonders of travel and the value of exploring new cultures. Her mother aroused the young girl’s interest in science by buying her a chemistry set.
At the age of 16, Patricia Bath became one of a few students to attend a cancer research workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Graduating from high school, Bath headed to Hunter College and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1964. She then attended Howard University for a medical degree. Bath graduated with honors from Howard in 1968 and accepted an internship at Harlem Hospital. She began a fellowship in ophthalmology (眼科) at Columbia University the following year and completed her residency in ophthalmology at New York University in 1973.
Bath moved to California in 1974 to work as an assistant professor of surgery at both CharlesR. Drew University and the University of California. In 1975, she became a teacher at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute. In 1976, Bath co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, establishing that “eyesight is a basic human right”. In 1981, Bath began working on the Laserphaco Probe. With laser technology, the device, completed in 1986, created a less painful and more precise treatment of cataracts (白内障).
In 1993, Bath retired from the UCLA Medical Center and became its honorary member. That same year, she was named a “Howard University Pioneer in Academic Medicine”. Among her many roles in the medical field, Bath was a strong advocate of tele-medicine, particularly to provide medical services in remote areas.
Bath died on May 30 2019, in San Francisco. A memorial service for Bath was held on June 14 in Los Angeles.

6. What can we learn about the Laserphaco Probe
A. It reduces the pain of cataract treatment.
B. It makes completely curing cataracts possible.
C. It gets rid of the reliance on laser technology.
D. It aids in defending the basic right of eyesight.
7. What is the possible intention of the author’s reference to tele-medicine

Hearing is the ability to perceive sounds through vibrations (振动) that are interpreted by your brain. These sounds can be a baby’s cries, a conversation with others, music, and even the rain falling on your roof. These are all external sounds. But some people experience a high-pitched buzzing or ringing in their ears, a condition known as tinnitus (耳鸣). These sounds are internal and cannot be removed. While there is no cure, there have been many strategies to help reduce the symptoms(症状). Now a new device, the Lenire, which has been approved by the FDA, can treat tinnitus in a very unusual way — by using electrical stimulation of the tongue.
The Lenire is the first bimodal neuromodulation device approved for tinnitus treatment in the US, according to the American Tinnitus Association website. Developed by the Irish company Neutomod Devices, the device uses mild electrical pulses (脉冲) to the user’s tongue while the person listens to different sounds via headphones, which helps to stimulate changes in the brain, shifting the user’s attention away from the buzzing or ringing sounds.
A clinical trial of the device found that the Lenire reduced the severity of tinnitus in more than 80 percent of the participants during a 12-week period and this improvement could last for a year.
Audiologist Brian Fligor, who treats tinnitus patients in Boston, became one of the first to use the device in the US. He said, “A good candidate for this device is somebody who’s had tinnitus for at least three months,” but he warned that people should be evaluated first to make sure there’s not a potential medical issue that is causing the ringing. Some patients also benefit by using a combination of a hearing aid and the new device.
One of the disadvantages of the device is that it is expensive and not covered by insurance. But people using the Lenire have found relief from the symptoms of tinnitus and it proves that silence is really golden.
8. What can be learned about tinnitus from paragraph 1
A. It relates to babies’ cries. B. It is incurable at present.
C. It affects the tongue. D. It is caused by continuous ringing sounds.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the Lenire
A. Its social effects. B. Its working principle.
C. Its target users. D. Its development process.
10. Why are Brian Fligor’s words mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To imply other potential medical issues can be serious.
B. To show a hearing aid is as useful as the new device.
C. To display the new device is not well appreciated by all.
D. To stress not every tinnitus patient is suitable to use the new device.
11. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To introduce a device B. To advertise a company.
C. To report a clinical trial. D. To explain a disease.

Olympic athletes pour everything into training for the Games, routinely pushing their physical and mental bounds to the limit—and beyond—for a shot at a gold medal. Yet they are often accompanied by an emotional comedown.
Emotions are heightened by the nature of the event itself. The Olympics is a massive cultural event—a combination of global public attention, financial investment and media coverage. New international celebrities are created, and some competitors’ reputations are ruined during various accusations. Athletes are under the pressure of representing their country and winning medals in front of worldwide audience. “But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,” says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, “Now what ”
A 2023 paper explained the identity crises athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped. In a 2018 paper, Howells wrote that athletes with a greater “myopic” focus are more at risk of the “blues”. “It is common for top competitors to have this very high athletic identity,” says Howells. “They’ve sacrificed (牺牲) every other aspect of their identity for the purpose of being an Olympian. They seem unable to realize that their actions might have negative consequences in the future.”
Efforts to minimize this mindset have helped some athletes to open up more about their mental health. Experts advise Olympians to start conversations about mental health support well before the Games begin. Olympians should also discuss mental health monitoring strategies before, during and after the Games. Athletes and experts say the sporting industry has, in the last decade, been promoting better work-life balance outside of the game. Briana, a soccer goalkeeper, says that her team and coaches actively encourage spending quality time with families and significant others, as well as finding hobbies that feel joyful and rewarding.
12. What is the main cause for Olympic athletes’ mental breakdown
A. A sense of loss. B. The pressure of competition.
C. The media coverage. D. The audience’s attention.
13. What does the underlined word “myopic” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Ridiculous. B. Short-sighted. C. All-around. D. Unexpected.
14. What might be a fundamental solution to the athletes’ identity crisis
A. Having higher athletic identity.
B. Discussing their problems publicly.
C. Developing a sense of identity outside the sport.
D. Making greater achievements in sporting industry.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. From Bad to Worse: Athletes’ Well-being
B. Olympic Athletes Suffering from Stress
C. Athletes Adapting to Post-Olympic Period
D. From Hero to Zero: the Post-Olympic Blues

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents ” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I…I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father’s brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie Or could it have… ” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this out together.”
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.
