Victor Hugo once said, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” Up to now, nobody has been able to create laughter like Charlie Chaplin (1889—1977). He brightened the lives of millions through two world wars and the hard years in between.
Not that Charlie’s own life was easy. He was born to a poor family. Charlie learnt to sing and dance as soon as he could speak and walk. Every member of the family performed to help make money. By his teens, Charlie had, through his humor, become one of the most popular child actors in England.
Later, Chaplin began making silent films, where the story was told only through body language and movements. Usually, Chaplin appeared in these films as the Little Tramp, a poor man with a moustache (胡须), large trousers, worn-out shoes, and a round hat. He walked around stiffly (僵硬的) with a walking stick. Even though the Little Tramp was considered a failure in life, he always tried to turn his sadness into joy like Chaplin.
In the film The Kid (1921), the Little Tramp brings up an abandoned (遗弃的) child as his own. While the film has many funny moments, it also has times of great sadness. As Chaplin said, it was “a picture with a smile, and perhaps a tear”. Similarly, in The Gold Rush (1925), with nothing to eat, the Little Tramp treats one boot (靴子) as something delicious and makes you believe that this is one of the best meals he has ever tasted.
Chaplin once said, “My pain may be the reason for somebody’s laugh. But my laugh must never be the reason for somebody’s pain.” He is loved and remembered as a great actor who encouraged people during dark times.

If what you’re doing isn’t a challenge for you, then it won’t make you different. After all, we all need a bit of normal stress in our lives. 26 So, let’s challenge these limits.
●Figure out what scares you and keep doing it.
If you’re a salesperson and you’re afraid of talking to people in person or on the phone right now, don’t just be scared and think you’ll fail. Spend at least five minutes every day picking up the phone and making a call. 27 But don’t give up after the first try! In the end, you can look fear right in the eye and say, “Come on. I’m not afraid!”
28
Make sure this hobby has nothing to do with your job. When you do this hobby, you can relax and get rid of stress. Some examples are cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Besides helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby might also give you some extra money.
●Set aside at least nine minutes every day for exercise.
29 A simple nine-minute run around your neighborhood can do great things for you. Exercise can not only help you keep your weight normal but also make you feel better about yourself.
●Travel and be interested in new people.
Don’t just talk to the people you’re traveling with. Try to talk to the service staff too. You never know what kind of people they are. Get out of your house or go online and book a ticket right now. 30

31 Chris: My mom always thinks I am poor at everything and that I can’t take care of myself. And she always thinks she is right and I’m wrong. 32 Julian: As a busy middle school student, I have seven subjects to learn now. I often fall into a feeling of stress. It’s hard for me to get out of it and manage my time. 33 Milly: I think it’s very important to study hard as students. So I always do my homework or read my books during break time. But my friends usually don’t let me do this. 34 Daniel: When my voice changed, my classmates said I sounded like a duck and it made me really sad. Now, I don’t feel like talking much, and I really want my old voice back. 35 Ben: Our school doesn’t allow us to use mobile phones in the school. Our teachers ask us to hand in our phones when we arrive at school. I don’t think they have the right to do this. A.It’s not nice being laughed at. But try not to be upset about your voice breaking because it’s a natural change. You should be proud of the changes your body is going through instead of being embarrassed. B.You are correct. The most important thing for you right now is to study hard. Don’t ever think that other people can make you do anything you don’t want to do. It’s up to you to decide how to spend your time. C. In my opinion, phones just aren’t worth having in the classroom. When you are in class, focus on your studies. You will have time at home to use your phone however you feel fit. Listen to your school. They know what’s best in this situation. D.Everybody overthinks sometimes. Try to develop a positive mental attitude. If you feel positive that you’re going to achieve, then more often than not you will be successful in what you’re doing; if not, then it’s just a lesson for next time. E. It may be helpful to think from your mom’s side. Instead of believing you are poor at everything, she thinks that if she says you aren’t very good at things, you will work harder and do even better. You can share your feelings if you feel upset. F. I would suggest better organizing your time. You can draw a large table on an A3 piece of paper. Each row (行) has seven boxes for each day of the week. Then fill every box with the subjects you will study and other activities you may do.

their“他们的”。故填their。
故填a。
故填are used。
根据“... wonderful these traditions are!” 故填How。
46.例文
Dear Principal,
Recently, the problems of the canteen have given rise to a heated discussion among the students in our school, which I think should be paid great attention.
On the one hand, the canteen has some problems. First, the prices of the dishes are rather high and there are few of dishes. Also, the long queues cost us a great deal of time for lunch break. What’s more, the food tastes bad, leading to serious waste.
On the other hand, I have two suggestions. Firstly, the canteen could lower the prices and enrich the variety of dishes. Secondly, more cooks could be hired to improve cooking efficiency and taste.
I sincerely hope these problems can be solved in the near future.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
