Emma quickly left the table with the full plate of food in hand. As Emma approached the homeless man, her eyes filled with empathy. She greeted him with a warm smile and handed him the plate of food. On receiving the food, the man could hardly conceal his excitement and thanked her joyfully. Meanwhile, Emma sat down beside him, engaging in a heartfelt conservation. Witnessing the moving scene, the mother felt a sense of satisfaction.
As Emma returned, her mother smiled proudly. Moved and delighted, her mother gave her a big hug and praised her for extending a helping hand to the homeless man outside. With another large plate of steak ordered on the table, a surge of happiness and warmth running Emma, she was so relieved that she tasted the steak happily. At that moment, the mother realized that Emma had taught her an invaluable lesson-the joy of giving. While the steak may have been Emma’s favorite, Emma understood the importance of sharing and making a difference in someone else’s life.

During the summer, Hu Miaokun, a 19-year-old with congenital (先天的) deafness, received offers from seven universities, after years of efforts.
Born in 2005 in a village in Hubei Province, Hu lost his father at five and later lived with his grandparents after his mother remarried. Supported by his family, he was admitted to a school for children with hearing disability. “Adapting to life in a group was tough,” Hu sighed. “When I first started school, everything felt scary. I couldn’t hear anything, completely lost. I had to get used to the new environment, follow new rules, and learn how to interact with others. But over time, these challenges became easier to manage.”
Hu recalls how his teachers used tailored techniques and tools to aid learning. After middle school, Hu attended a specialized high school. For students with hearing and speech impairments (损伤), learning English proved particularly difficult. While many of his schoolmates had some basic knowledge of the language and were exposed to English through songs, movies, and everyday conversations, Hu had no previous exposure, making the task even more challenging.
“My key is reading, writing, and translation,” Hu said. He created a detailed study plan and excelled. Hu Miaokun took the national college entrance examination. His hard work paid off. Since August, Hu Miaokun has received offers from all seven universities to which he applied. Ultimately, Hu Miaokun decided to pursue product design at his dream school, Tianjin University of Technology.
With ambitions of becoming a 3D designer specializing in product modeling, he is now focusing on mastering various modeling software. “I’m deeply thankful to my aunt and everyone who has supported me,” Hu Miaokun signed. “I will continue to work hard in my studies and, in the future, use my skills to inspire and assist others.”

We are all guilty of grabbing our phones and scrolling through social media when times get boring. Psychologists have noted in numerous studies over the past decade that individuals engage in social media and other digital media to escape boredom. However, the same studies reveal that consuming such media can actually increase boredom in individuals.
That result may be a product of constantly “switching” between different content online, the endless pursuit of the next piece of media to alleviate present boredom.
To investigate the role that fast-forwarding and switching videos has in boredom, Dr Katy Tam, the lead author of the research and researchers performed two experiments on about 1,200 people. In the first trial, the study participants had two viewing experiences. They both watched a 10-minute video without the option to switch or fast- forward and then had a 10-minute period where they could switch between seven 5-minute videos. In the second experiment, participants watched a 10-minute video in one round and in the other round were allowed to fast-forward or rewind through a 50-minute video.
Participants predicted they would be less bored with the option to switch or fast-forward for both experiments but reported afterward that they found watching one video all the way through to be more engaging, satisfying and meaningful.
Tam said boredom was closely linked to attention. “We feel bored when there’s a gap between how engaged we are and how engaged we want to be,” she said. “When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom.”
Finally, said Tam, it could be worth taking your time before hitting the fast-forward or skip buttons. “Our research shows that while people fast-forward or skip videos to avoid boredom, this behaviour can actually make them feel more bored,” she said. “Just as we pay for an immersive (沉浸式) experience in a movie theatre, enjoyment often comes from immersing ourselves in videos rather than swiping (滚屏) through them.”
28.What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 2mean
A.Ease. B.Understand. C.Define. D.Justify.
29.Tam’s study found that participants reported higher levels of boredom when ______.
A.the length of a video was too long. B.the video content was played repeatedly.
C.they switched between videos and within video. D.they watched the same video through to the end.
30.What did Tam present in paragraph 5
A.Ways of watching videos. B.The design of his experiment.
C.Examples of divided attention. D.The cause of people’s boredom.
31.What was Tam’s suggestion in the last paragraph
A.Pay for a viewing experience. B.Refer to the ratings before watching videos.
C.Go to a cinema for an immersive experience. D.Stay focused on the content while watching videos.

When visiting a doctor in the future, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be shown onto a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis (诊断) and provide personalized treatments for the patients.
No matter how unreal this might seem, the researchers at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) already use computer simulations (模拟) of the hearts of patients to test different treatments for a heart disorder. It would be far too dangerous to experiment this way on someone’s real heart.
Digital twins are starting to be seen everywhere. They can not only monitor the health of jet engines on airliners, but also help carmakers spend fewer years on the development of new models by simulating test drives and crashes. All this is being powered by recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI), which gives twins the ability to make predictions about their physical counterparts (对应的事物), and adjust themselves based on new information..
Digital twins make it easier for humans to solve challenging problems, allowing people to have a look into the future. For businesses, this should mean better designs and operations. For society, the promise is also fascinating: personalized health care, and ways to prevent the earth from environmental disasters.
Could these virtual twins go out of control They might if they are programmed badly, or hacked into. Digital twins will take in mountains of data, some of it wrong and much of it raising concerns about privacy. Yet those risks are a natural part of technological progress. The appearance of the digital mirror world will raise new questions, but its potential benefits are already easy to see.
32.Which of the following best describes a digital twin
A.A virtual copy. B.A video game. C.A toy model. D.A medical database.
33.Why do researchers at QMUL use computer simulations of hearts
A.To reduce the time of the heart operation.
B.To use real hearts much more conveniently.
C.To help increase the patients’ recovery rates.
D.To avoid the danger of experimenting on real hearts.
34.How does AI contribute to the development of digital twins
A.It increases the efficiency of simulations through data analysis.
B.It creates accurate digital copies for medical and industrial use.
C.It enables digital twins to predict results and adapt on their own.
D.It improves virtual models by adding real-time monitoring features.
35.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Digital Twins: A Potential Threat to Privacy
B.Digital Twins: The Future of Problem-Solving
C.Digital Twins: A New Age of Medical Treatment
D.Digital Twins: A Double-Edged Sword of Technology

Listening to the wonderful music, she couldn’t help but dance in the back seat. Considering her safety, her mother had to stop her and said, “Hey! My sweety! Please be quiet and fasten your seat belt!”
“Okay! Mom,” she answered while continuing to roll down the car window.
“Emma! Don’t head out of the window! This is very dangerous! No hands either!” Mom raised his voice as she spoke.
She said yes and then quietly sat back in place. But there was no previous happiness. She got off in silence and ordered meals silently. Her mother thought that perhaps her tone had just been too urgent, and she tried to make her happy. “Sweetheart, this is a monthly steak appointment. Can you enjoy it with your mom happily ”
Emma nodded silently but continued to stare out of the window. Ten minutes later, Emma looked at the large plate of steak and potatoes as if she had no intention of eating them. Mom sighed and asked, “Isn’t it your favorite steak, sweetheart ” “It is, mom,” Emma said in a low voice. After listening to her answer, Mom brought the steak and planned to help her daughter cut it into small pieces as before.
“No, mom, she quickly reached out for the plate. “I can only eat it once a month, right ” “Yes, we made a promise about this,” said the mother.
“Can I just give it to him ” Emma cautiously asked, and her-eyes filled with expectations. Following the direction of her finger, there was a homeless man in tattered (破烂的) clothes.
