Evans Wadongo was from a village of Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp (煤油
灯). Evans’ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for
this reason, so they stayed poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and attended university. He continued to
worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realized it was not just bad for school children but for the whole
family. First, it could cause illnesses such as coughs. Also, the light could hurt people’s eyes. Besides, it can lead to
fires. Lastly, kerosene was expensive, so families had less money for food. It was difficult to create a new kind of
lamp that was cheap and good for the environment, but Evans did not give up.
One day, he had an idea. He could use a small solar light. Sunlight is free and solar power is good for the
environment. Evans invented his first solar lamp, and it worked. He began to build more lamps and sent them to
local families.
Each lamp only cost $20. However, this was a lot of money to many villagers. They only earned (挣得) about
$34 a week. Evans made the costs lower. First, he used recycled materials (可循环材料). Next, volunteers built the
lamps. Finally, some people from many countries provided money to his team, so the lamps were usually free.

①Is the sky bluer in autumn than in summer The answer is yes! There are some reasons behind this.
②The sun is lower in the sky in autumn. As the days get shorter, the sun appears lower and lower in the sky.
It’s not directly (直接地) above us anymore, and more of the sky is at an angle (角度) away from the sun. This lets
more blue light reach our eyes, making the sky seem bluer.
③In autumn, there is less water in the air, so there are fewer clouds. Autumn is known for good weather-lower
temperatures and less wet air. The air does not hold much water, so clouds do not form easily. When there are few
or no clouds in the sky, the blue color of the sky shows more clearly, and the sky looks more open and bright.
④You might be surprised, but the colorful leaves of autumn actually help give the sky’s blue a color boost,
which can make the sky seem even bluer. If you’ve learned some knowledge about colors in an art class, you will
know that blue and orange are opposite colors that look good together. The red, orange, and gold leaves of autumn
make the blue sky stand out (显眼) beautifully against them. This contrast (对比) looks nice and creates a special
autumn view.
⑤So, the next time you go out enjoying the beautiful weather in autumn, take a moment to look up at the sky,
remember these reasons why it looks so blue and enjoy the view.
根据语篇内容,选择最佳选项。
56. Why does the sky look bluer in autumn according to Paragraph②
A. Because the sun is lower in the sky.
B. Because the sun is directly above us.
C. Because we can’t see more blue light.
57. Which one shows the relationship between the water in the air (x) and the blue color of the sky (y)
A. B. C.

The oil paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handcraft (手工艺品).
It has a history of over 1,000 years. In the Tang Dynasty, Chinese people brought it into Japan and Korea, so it
was called the “Tang Umbrella”. However, as modern umbrellas appeared in the last century, the hand-made oil
paper umbrellas became less used in daily life.
Yuhang in Hangzhou is known for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made
of skin paper, bamboo and Tung oil. It takes at least a week to make such an umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas
were added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of China (中国非物质文化遗产名录).
A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his
grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life,” Liu said. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas
weigh less. He improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of people.

My Favourite Traditional Festival
There are many traditional festivals in China. My favourite is the Spring Festival, which falls on the first day
of the lunar calendar.
During the festival, families gather together for a big reunion dinner. We also paste red couplets on doors to
bring good luck. Another exciting activity is setting off fireworks, which lights up the night sky.
I love the Spring Festival because it’s a time for joy and warmth. It makes me feel the strong bond among
family members. I’m proud to share this wonderful festival with visitors from ASEAN countries.
