I was born and raised in Minnesota, the USA, but as an adult I have mostly lived in Europe and Africa. I teach cross-cultural management at the International Business School near Paris. For the last 15 years, I’ve studied how people in different parts of the world build trust, communicate, and make decisions especially in the workplace.
While traveling in Tokyo recently with a colleague, I gave a short talk to a group of 20 managers. At the end, I asked whether there were any questions or comments. No hands went up, so I went to sit down. My colleague whispered to me, “I think there actually were some comments, Erin. Do you mind if I try ” I agreed, but I guessed it a waste of breath. He asked the group again. “Any comments or questions ”
Still, no one raised a hand, but this time he looked very carefully at each person in the silent audience. Gesturing to one of them, he said, “Do you have something to add ” To my amazement, she responded “Yes, thank you.” and asked me a very interesting question. My colleague repeated this several times, looking directly at the audience and asking for more questions or comments.
After the session, I asked my colleague, “How do you know that those people had questions ” He hesitated, not sure how to explain it, and then said, “it has to do with how bright their eyes are.”
He continued, “In Japan, we don’t make as much direct eye contact as you do in the West. So when you asked if there were any comments, most people were not looking directly at you. But a few people in the group were looking right at you, and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they would be happy to have you call on them.”
I thought to myself I would never have learned from my upbringing in Minnesota. Since then, I try to focus on understanding behavior in other cultures I encounter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the room.
24.What can we conclude from the first paragraph

25.What was the author’s initial reaction when hearing the colleague’s whisper
A.He immediately went back to his seat and sat down.
B.He thought his colleague had some questions to ask.
C.He believed his colleague’s effort would be useless.
D.He felt very grateful for his colleague’s suggestion.
26.Where does the author’s colleague probably come from
A.Japan. B.America. C.Africa. D.France.
27.Which is the proper title for the passage
A.Focusing on Behavior in Cultures
B.Admiring the Beauty in the Eye
C.Sharing Different Cultures in Tokyo
D.Looking at Another Culture in the Eye

Imagine standing in front of a restaurant menu with countless options, each sounding appealing. You spend 20 minutes thinking, only to feel anxious that the dish you finally choose might not be the best one available. This is “FOBO” — the fear of a better option.
“FOBO is the anxiety that something better will come along, which makes it difficult to commit to existing choices when making a decision,” said venture capitalist Patrick McGinnis, who came up with the term, “Especially if there are several options available, you worry that a better or even perfect choice might be out there, yet you struggle to choose just one.” While it’s important to weigh pros and cons and think through major decisions, FOBO keeps us caught in a loop (循环), forever chasing the unclear “what if”.
The concept of FOBO is based on a mistaken belief that “the longer we look, the more options we will have, and this will somehow lead to a better outcome.” However, there’s no guarantee of this. Instead, people may wait so long that they end up losing good options and regret not making a choice sooner. Constantly second-guessing oneself and living in uncertainty can cause stress and exhaustion. Psychologist Patricia Dixon explains, “Mentally, FOBO can contribute to anxiety and depression, as the constant search for better options prevents individuals from fully enjoying their present circumstances. This mindset leads to dissatisfaction, weakens self-trust, and ultimately hinders personal growth and connection.”
To overcome FOBO, the key is to streamline decision-making processes. Start by setting clear priorities and narrowing down your options to make choices easier. Limit the time spent on decisions to avoid overthinking, break down complex decisions into smaller, manageable parts, and gather only essential information. Trust your instincts (直觉) and embrace the idea of focusing on finding a “good enough” option rather than obsessing over perfection. Remind yourself that even if a better option appears later, you’ve already made progress.
28.Why do people experience FOBO
A.They want to make decisions quickly.
B.They have few choices to select from.
C.They fear missing out on a better option.
D.They tend to take account of others’ views.
29.What is a potential impact of FOBO on individuals
A.It blocks their way to embracing different ideas.
B.It weakens their ability to analyze complex issues.
C.It prevents them from achieving a perfect outcome.
D.It makes them dissatisfied with their current situation.
30.What does the underlined word “streamline” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Extend. B.Abandon. C.Evaluate. D.Simplify.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.FOBO: Decision-making Anxiety
B.Deciding Wisely: Avoiding Regret
C.FOBO: The Secret to Better Choices
D.Refusing Overthinking: Trusting Yourself
D
Unlike traditional rigid robots, soft robotics are built from flexible materials that copy the natural movements of living creatures. This design enables them to move through narrow spaces like disaster debris or complex paths inside the human body. However, adding sensors has been difficult. “The key was making them smart,” explains researcher Larry Cheng from Penn State University, “We needed robots that sense and act independently.”
The solution lies in electronic parts designed to bend. Traditional hard electronics limit robot movement, but Cheng’s team used bendable electronics spread across the body. They added magnetic materials inside. By adjusting magnetic fields, robots crawl, roll and twist wirelessly and battery-free.
Developing this technology faced two main obstacles. First, even bendable electronics are much stiffer than the robot’s soft material. “We arranged electronics like puzzle pieces to fit flexibly,” Cheng explained. Second, magnetic fields used for control can disturb electronic signals. The team redesigned circuits (电路) to prevent this interference, keeping sensors accurate near strong magnets.
These improvements allow robots to work with less human guidance. In rescue missions, they could find trapped people by detecting body heat. Medical versions might sense chemical changes to deliver drugs exactly where needed. Researchers are developing a pill-sized robot that patients could swallow. “It could examine the digestive system, collect samples, or treat diseases without surgery,” said Korean scientist Suk-Won Hwang, Cheng’s partner.
Future plans include creating tiny robots for blood vessel treatments. “Injected into veins, they could repair heart problems or target cancer cells,” Cheng described. Though unnamed yet, these robots might get public-suggested names. “That’s a fun idea,” Cheng laughed when asked about naming possibilities.
32.What is a major advantage of soft robotics
A.Rigid electronic control. B.Stiffer structural components
C.Strong built-in power supplies. D.Flexible movements in narrow spaces
33.What problems did researchers face in developing the soft robots
A.High cost and material scarcity.
B.Sensor accuracy and medical risks.
C.Stiff electronics and signal interference.
D.Limited movement and power shortage.
34.What can be inferred about future medical treatments in paragraph 4
A.Doctors will be replaced by robots.
B.Robots can only assist in diagnoses.
C.Treatment costs will significantly decrease.
D.Certain surgeries may become unnecessary.
35.How did Cheng feel about letting the public name the robots
A.Deeply moved. B.Lightly amused.
C.Slightly doubtful. D.Completely uninterested.

Giving Old Buildings a New Life
Walking through cities, we often see old buildings standing quietly. Sadly, many are forgotten, falling apart, and their stories fading away. 36
Fortunately, Chinese cities are finding creative ways to revive them. Instead of turning them into untouched museum pieces, these buildings are being transformed into lively spaces like cafes, bookstores, or galleries. 37
Some worry that changing a building’s use might harm it. 38 Take “Xianlang” cafe in Beijing as an example. It occupies a century-old site, the former Sino-French University. The cafe preserves the original exterior, including wooden carvings and windows. Inside, it uses colors inspired by French artist Henri Matisse, creating a space where visitors enjoy coffee while experiencing the cultural link between China and France. It’s more than a cafe; it’s a storyteller.
39 Bagong’s House in Wuhan, a red-brick building from the early 1900s once used by Russian tea merchants, is now a high-end hotel preserving its facade. Inside, digital exhibitions showcase the ancient tea road history it witnessed. It also hosts talks and art shows, actively sharing its past with the public.
Bringing old buildings back to life takes creativity and a strong sense of responsibility. 40 Every time an old building is brought back to life, a piece of cultural memory is saved, and part of the city’s story continues.
A.These cultural treasures may disappear forever otherwise.
B.Digital tech and cultural events also breathe new life into old structures.
C.Therefore, protecting them requires government funding and public support.
D.Such neglect reflects a common challenge in urban development worldwide.
E.We need to find a balance between respecting the past and adding new ideas.
F.This creative reuse gives old structures new purposes while keeping their souls.
G.However, sensitive restoration that respects history allows for functional change.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Near the village of Hengkeng in China’s Zhejiang province, there’s a bamboo forest with an open-air theatre, also made of bamboo. The incredible thing, however, is 56 no bamboo was actually cut to build the theater. Instead, living bamboo trees 57 (bend) and roped until they formed a dome (穹顶) with a circular opening at the top.
The so-called Bamboo Theater was designed by Xu Tiantian of DnA Design and Architecture to provide a space 58 cultural activities for the local community. Together with seven other 59 (project) from across China, it’s been highlighted in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York that seeks 60 (change) people’s understanding of the country’s approach to contemporary architecture.
Titled “Reuse, Renew, Recycle: Recent Architecture from China”, the exhibition presents a new generation of Chinese architects who are promoting 61 (society) and environmental sustainability by transforming industrial buildings, 62 (recycle) materials, and reinterpreting ancient building techniques.
Nowadays, the meaning of sustainability is often defined by a large number of standards 63 certifications rather than the lived, spatial experience. But the exhibition introduces a more delicate definition 64 (inspire) by the use of traditional materials and a stronger 65 (connect) between architecture and nature.
“We want to redirect the global conversation to ecological approaches to architecture,” says Martino Stierli, who organized the exhibition along with Evangelos Kotsioris.

Her mother. Mrs. Thompson, always tried to explain. “Doing housework helps you grow into a responsible person. Amy, And it shows you care about our family.” But Amy never listened. To her, household chores were a tiresome burden, a waste of her precious teenage years.
One Monday evening, as Amy sat at the dinner table pushing her food around her plate, her mother coughed violently. Her face turned pale, and she excused herself, saying she wasn’t feeling well, Mrs. Thompson went to bed early, leaving a sink full of dirty dishes.
Amy thought about asking her mother to wash the dishes later, but something held her back. Remembering her mother’s pale face and weak voice. Amy was overwhelmed with a strange feeling. For the first time, she noticed how tired her mother looked lately. She realized that, besides taking care of the family, her mother also worked long hours at the office.
With a sigh. Amy stood up and walked into the kitchen. She stared at the mountain of dishes, feeling discouraged. But she rolled up her sleeves. As she washed the plates and bowls, she thought about all the times her mother had done this without a single complaint. Just as she was finishing up, she heard a soft voice behind her. “Amy ” It was her mother, looking surprised and touched, “You...you did the dishes.”
Amy turned around, feeling a bit embarrassed, “Yeah, well... you weren’t feeling well. so I thought I’d help out,” Mrs. Thompson smiled. her eyes filled with pride. “Thank you, dear, That’s very kind of you.”
That night, as Amy lay in bed, she couldn’t stop thinking. Maybe her mother was right. Maybe doing housework wasn’t just a chore-it was a way to show love and care for her family.

第一节:
Good morning, everyone. I’m Li Hua, the president of the student union. First of all, I’d like to express our sincere gratitude to Lisa for coming back to share her precious experience with us. Her report, titled “High School Hints,” is sure to provide us with valuable insights and useful tips on how to make the most of our high school years. I hope all of you can listen attentively and take notes. After the report, there will be a Q&A session, during which you can feel free to ask Lisa any questions you have. Let’s give Lisa a warm welcome!
第二节:
The next morning, Amy woke up early and headed straight to the kitchen. She found her mother sitting at the table, sipping a cup of tea. Seeing Amy, Mrs. Thompson looked surprised. “Why are you up so early ” she asked. Amy smiled and replied, “I want to help make breakfast today. After all, I’ve learned that doing housework is a way to show love.” Her mother’s eyes widened with joy, and she hugged Amy tightly, saying, “I’m so proud of you, dear.”
From that day on, Amy’s perspective on doing household chores changed. She no longer saw them as tiresome tasks but as opportunities to contribute to her family’s happiness. Whenever she did the dishes or swept the floor, she thought about how these small acts made a big difference. One day, when her friends complained about doing chores, Amy shared what she had learned, telling them, “I’ve realized that helping out at home is not just a duty; it’s a way to show we care.” Her words made her friends pause and think.

M: Peter and I have decided to go hiking in the nearby countryside this afternoon. Do you want to join us

W: Amazing! But who is Georges Remi
M: He’s a Belgian artist. He created the drawing as the cover of his book, The Blue Lotus. Then he drew a simpler version of the picture with a black dragon and a red background. He gave the original drawing to the 7-year-old son of his editor, which wasn’t seen again until 1981.
W: Have you read the book
M: Yes. It tells the story of a young reporter called Tintin, his dog Snowy, and their adventures in China. In the original picture, Tintin and Snowy are hiding in a large vase while a huge dragon floats above them.

M: No, I gave it up. I just found the plot was not that attractive.
W: Alright. Anyway, are you still feeling okay to help me with my term paper this evening I mean, that’s totally fine with me if you want to change it to another day. I can help my mom do some cleaning, or teach my sister to play the guitar instead.

W: Those Friday classes sure ruin a four-day week.
M: Yeah. You still have time before you register the courses
W: There are still a few minutes left till ten.
M: I’ve heard that there’s a real shortage of dorm space this year.
W: How come The student body doesn’t increase, I think.
M: They pulled down Dormitory A to put up a new one—but it won’t be finished until the end of December.
W: Too bad. I wouldn’t want to live outside the campus anyway. You know, it’s economical and convenient to live right here.
M: Yeah. But we could share the money for an apartment—and think of the parties we could throw! You can’t have a real party in a dorm room.
W: Yeah. That’s a very good point. Let’s keep our eyes open for a place outside school for next year, then.
【Text 10】
M: Welcome to Inhotim. Now I’ll give an introduction to it, first. From a distance, Inhotim looks like typical Brazilian countryside, but as you get closer, you notice something a bit unusual. There are tourists walking through the fields and gardens! This beautiful place started as a farm and for many years only farmers lived here. But that all changed in the 1990s when billionaire Bernardo Paz decided to use the space for something very different. He created a “Disneyland” for art lovers! Today, people travel from around the world and look at the art. The spaces of Inhotim include more than 500 sculptures by Brazilian and international artists. As well as being important culturally, it is really important for the local area because Inhotim creates a lot of jobs—1,000 people work here in the museum, gardens and restaurants. Although it is quite far from the usual tourist spots of Brazil, it is now a very successful and popular outdoor museum.
