When I was in my first year of high school, I had a terrible time when every area of my life was a disaster. I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible.
On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought he'd walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up, and then smiled.
Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice:"Whatever is wrong will pass. You're going to be OK, just hang on." He then smiled again and walked away.
I can't explain the effect of that man's unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one thing that I'd lost completely—hope. I looked for him in our school to thank him, but never saw him again.
That was thirty years ago. And I've never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark wherever I can. I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy, or talk to tired couples at the checkout line or it could be anything.
If you keep your head up, your heart will show you the place that needs hope.
4. Where did the writer meet with the young man?
A. In the school. B. In the school bus. C. In the classroom. D. In the library.
5. From the passage we may infer that the author ________.
A. had known the young man for a long time
B. made friends with the young man afterwards
C was grateful to that young man very much
D. avoided meeting the young man since then
6. The author has given a lot of help to others in order to ________.
A. show his sympathy to those who are badly ill
B. give others hope of life when they are in trouble
C. realize his promise made to the young man
D. get respect from those who were helped by him
7. It can be known from the passage that ________.
A. the young man always tried his best to help those who were in trouble
B. it was the young man's smile and words that made the author feel hopeful
C. the author had never been praised by others before he met with the young man
D. the author traveled to a lot of places to look for the young man but failed
C
The computer is a powerful tool. With it, teachers can improve the classroom experience in a variety of ways. But misuse of the computer will probably result in disadvantages.
To investigate the way technology is being used in our school district, I recently spoke with Jeanine Lowell, who teaches social studies at Lake Town Middle School. Mrs. Lowell informed me that computers have helped to increase students’ motivation and prepare them for life in a technological society. “These kids are probably going to be using some kind of computer system when they graduate from high school,” Lowell noted. “It’s important that we provide a proper introduction to them in the classroom.” Lowell also observed that the computers have made it easier to promote different areas of learning, so that students can work on a project or topic that relates to more than one subject.
With all of these benefits, however, come a few shortcomings. Although Mrs. Lowell has nearly wallpapered her room with warnings that state: “The computer is NOT A TOY”, not everyone in the class agrees with this idea. Some students get easily distracted (分心) by the internet and are quite good at making it look as if they are doing work when they are really checking their email or watching videos. “You’ve got to be three steps ahead,” she told me, “if you want to stay on top of what they’re actually doing on the computer.”
Some schools use some type of blocking software to ensure that students cannot access improper sites at school. More complex programs use a server-based, network-wide program instead of software that runs on personal computers. Research has shown that in a way these server-based blocking programs provide better security, because some students can disable the software on a personal computer.
However, there is no replacement for the watchful eye of a good teacher like Jeanine Lowell. There are also no electronic cure-alls for any of education’s many challenges. Technology is a useful tool, but that is all it is: a tool.
8. Where is this passage most likely from
A. A newspaper. B. An advertisement.
C. A novel. D. A diary.
9. Which of the following isn’t the benefit of computer use in the classroom

B. Opportunities for learning across different subjects.
C. Increased preparation for the future use in the workplace.
D. Convenience of sharing ideas with people living across the globe.
10. The best way to prevent students from accessing improper sites on school computers is to ______.
A. post warning signs throughout the classroom
B. use blocking software on personal computers
C. monitor what students do on the computers carefully
D. use server-based software programs on personal computers
11. What is the writer’s opinion on the use of computers in the classroom
A. It does more harm than good.
B. It is only supported by experts.
C. It contributes to teaching in some way.
D. It is more beneficial to teachers than students.
D
People who often eat nuts appear to live longer, according to the latest study of its kind. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested the greatest benefit was in those eating them on their daily diet.
Eating nuts was linked to a healthier lifestyle including being less likely to smoke or be overweight and more likely to exercise. The British Heart Foundation said more research was needed to prove the link, “While this is an interesting link, we need further research to make sure if it's the nuts that protect heart health, or other sides of people’s lifestyle .”
The study followed nearly 120,000 people for 30 years. The more regularly people ate nuts, the less likely they were to die during the study. People eating nuts once a week were 11% less likely to have died during the study than those who never ate nuts. Lead researcher Dr. Charles Fuchs, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said, “The most obvious benefit was a decrease of 29%in deaths from heart disease, but we also saw a significant reduction-11%- in the danger of dying from cancer.”
They suggest nuts are lowering cholesterol(胆固醇). and insulin resistance(胰岛素抗性). Nuts contain unsaturated fat(不饱和脂肪), protein(蛋白质) and several kinds of vitamins and minerals and they can take the place of snacks like chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits.
Victoria Taylor, senior expert at the British Heart Foundation, said, “This study shows close connection between regularly eating a small handful of nuts and a lower risk of death from heart disease.” Choosing plain, unsalted foods rather than sweet, salted, or chocolate-covered will keep your salt and sugar intake down.
12. According to the passage, what kind of people benefit most from eating nuts
A. Those who eat most nuts at a time.
B. Those who eat most nuts.
C. Those who eat nuts on their daily diet.
D. Those who eat less nuts.
13. Which kind of disease had a most decrease for regular nuts eater
A. Cancer.
B. Heart disease.
C. Stomach disease.
D. Unknown.
14. The writer developed the article mainly by .
A. providing facts
B. giving examples
C. listing data
D. comparing the difference
15. Which section should the passage be taken from the newspaper
A. Science section.
B. Health section.

My Days in Wild Sancturay
Last summer, I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary (野生动物保护区) in South Africa. The sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating endangered animals, particularly those affected by human activities such as poaching and habitat destruction. 他们的主要目标之一是一旦这些动物康复,就把它们重新引入野外。
During my time there, I was introduced to a young leopard named Zara. Zara had been found injured and malnourished (营养不良的) in a nearby forest. It was heartbreaking to see her in such a state, but the dedicated staff worked tirelessly to nurse her back to health. They provided her with nutritious food and a safe environment to recover. Over the weeks, I witnessed Zara’s transformation from a weak and frightened animal to a strong and confident predator.
Another memorable experience was helping with the release (释放) of a family of baboons that had been rescued from captivity. These baboons had spent most of their lives in small cages and were not accustomed to living in the wild. The sanctuary staff prepared them for release by teaching them essential survival skills and gradually introducing them to the natural environment. Seeing the baboons finally free and adapting to their new life was a truly rewarding moment.
The sanctuary also places a strong emphasis (强调) on community education. They organize regular visits from local schools and communities to teach people about the importance of biodiversity and conservation. One day, we had a group of schoolchildren visit, and I helped explain how each species plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. It was inspiring to see the children’s eyes light up with curiosity and understanding.
By the end of my stay, I realized the profound impact that these conservation (保护) efforts have not only on the animals but also on the people who learn about the importance of protecting our planet. Every small action counts, whether it’s rescuing an animal, educating a child, or supporting conservation initiatives. Together, we can make a significant difference in preserving the rich tapestry of life on Earth.
46. 他们的主要目标之一是一旦这些动物康复,就把它们重新引入野外。(reintroduce sth back into, once, recover)
