Going into my Ph.D. program, I knew I loved to communicate science to the public as much as I liked doing science. But research soon consumed most of my time. The more absorbed I was in practicing science, the more I felt I was losing touch with the bigger picture of why it matters.
I was in desperate need of a getaway, so I got to spend a weekend with some family and friends. They were excited to share stories about the latest books they'd consumed. Yet I couldn't remember the last book I had read for fun. And I also found myself mostly talking about my research. As I struggled to convey its broader relevance, I noticed the enthusiasm in my voice disappeared. “Is my Ph.D. killing my love of science ” I thought.
When I returned home, I resolved to dedicate more of my time to reading for pleasure. I was recommended a science fiction book, so I started with that. It was like nothing I had ever read before. I was struck by the scientifically reasonable technologies and scenes. It was refreshing to think about science in a new way.
I kept reading science fiction after I finished my Ph.D. But I still hadn't gotten back to communicating science to the public. Then, one night I found myself in a conversation with my new colleagues about science fiction concepts. One invited me to speak at the pop culture lecture. Then the day came. After I finished my lecture, I was surrounded with enthusiastic audience. It suddenly occurred to me that this was my path back to science communication. Since then, I've given more than 20 talks.
I'm glad science fiction gave me a way to break out. It not only provided something fun to do in my spare time but also helped me professionally, fueling my ability to communicate the wonders of science to the public.
24. What happened to the author at that weekend
A He understood broader relevance of science.
B. He realized his passion for science faded away.
C. He found his memory was declining with time.
D. He managed to share his knowledge of science.
25. Why did the author find science fiction appealing
A. It offered him a new angle to science.
B. It could explain physical phenomena.
C. He wanted to find inspirations from it.
D. He wanted to put his knowledge to use.
26. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. My conversation with colleagues was boring.
B. Science fictions inspired my love for science.
C. My lecture was well received by the audience.
D. The audience were all enthusiastic science lovers.
27. What is the main idea of the passage
A. A successful lecture could make a big difference.
B. It was of great importance to read science fictions.
C. My Ph.D program took my interest in science away.
D. Science fiction aided me to be a science communicator.

A new study shows that animal assisted therapy can help students fight against homesickness and could be a useful tool in lowering post secondary drop out rates.
“Transitioning from high school to university can prove to be a challenge for many first year students,” says Assistant Professor John Tyler Binfet of UBC’s Okanagan campus. “Given that students who experience homesickness are more likely than their non homesick peers to drop out of university, universities have a vested interest (既得利益) in supporting students during their first year transition.”
In the study, 44 first year university students who self identified as homesick were given a survey to measure levels of homesickness, satisfaction with life and connectedness with campus. Half of the students completed eight weeks of dog therapy, while the other half were informed that their sessions would begin in eight weeks’ time.
Following the initial eight week session, participants in both the treatment group and the non treatment group completed the survey again. Participants who completed the eight week program experienced significant reductions in homesickness and greater increase in satisfaction with life. Participants reported that sessions “felt like they were at home chatting with friends who brought their puppies” while the non treatment group reported an increase in their feelings of homesickness.
According to a previous report, students who left post secondary happy were almost twice as likely to have felt a sense of belonging compared to students who left unhappy. Students who left university unhappy were almost twice as likely to say they did not feel a sense of belonging on campus. A total of 29 percent of students who dropped out cited more interactions and friendships with other students as a factor that would have influenced their decision to stay longer.
“Many first year university students face the challenge of integrating into their new campus community,” says Binfet. “Homesick students are three times more likely than those who manage their homesickness to disengage and drop out of university.”
“Moving to a new city, I did not know anyone at the university and became very homesick and depressed,” says UBC Okanagan student Varenka Kim. “I was mainly secluded in my dorm room and did not feel like I belonged ing to animal assisted therapy sessions every Friday gave me a sense of purpose and kept me enthusiastic about life.”
28. What can we learn from the new study
A. Half of the students were given a survey to measure levels of homesickness.
B. Students who left post secondary were less likely to have a sense of belonging.
C. The treatment group felt less homesick and much happier with life after the therapy.
D. The non treatment group reported an increase in levels of connectedness with campus.
29. What might happen to the university students who fail to manage their home sickness
A. They are likely to have more friends.
B. They are more likely to quit school some day.
C. They may fit into their new campus community.
D. They may be addicted to interactions with others.
30. What's Varenka Kim's attitude towards animal assisted therapy
A. Supportive. B. Dismissive. C. Neutral. D. Cautious.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. The Tips on Increasing Levels of Happiness
B. The Effects Pets Have on University Students
C. University Students Are Now Facing Challenges
D. Pet Therapy Can Help Overcome Homesickness
D
The idea of a four day workweek sounds appealing: Work efficiently over a shorter period of time and then enjoy the benefits of three day weekends. Generally, employees are paid the same amount as they are when working longer hours. In the process, workers could find work life balance and personal growth. Facing the high rate career mobility of their staff, some employers are willing to try this new idea too, as they seek to improve employee retention. But how it is carried out matters.
Best cases: Shorter workweeks boost productivity and reduce burnout. Worst cases: Workers who struggle to complete their tasks within limited hours may face overwhelming pressure to accomplish them even faster.
4 Day Week Global, a non profit organization that conducts trials with academics and promotes shorter workweeks, recently released new findings from a year long research period with companies that volunteered to participate. After six months of aiming to work 32 hours a week, participants reported an overall boost in well being and job satisfaction, which remained higher than baseline levels(基准水平) another six months panies and workers included in the report rated the trials positively and indicated their desire to continue four day workweeks.
A four day workweek can lead to improvements only if it is carried out properly. For those workers required to shoulder an unmanageable workload to begin with, trying to complete work in fewer hours could lead to burnout.
How workers spend their off hours matters too. If an employee spends Friday relaxing at the park or enjoying time with family, it’s easy to see how they would come back refreshed and energetic on Monday. But if a worker spends Friday answering emails from clients who are not on a reduced schedule, that may not be the case.
While there are numerous factors to be taken into account, in recent years, companies and governments around the world have been considering the idea of reducing working hours while maintaining pay, especially in white collar industries with standard 40 hour workweeks.
32. What does the underlined word “retention” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Well being. B. Salary. C. Longer stays. D. Useful skills.
33. Who is more likely to agree with the idea of a four day workweek
A. Those who are burdened with more work.
B. Those who can work with great efficiency.
C. Those who seek for more money and pleasure.
D. Those who have a high level of job satisfaction.
34. What does the author want to convey in paragraph 5
A. A happy weekend can help boost work efficiency.
B. Some workers are occupied even during weekends.
C. A three day weekend will lead to a tighter schedule.
D. All workers can embrace a new weekday energetically.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Entertainment. B. Education. C. Politics. D. Society.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Earth and Mars are a bit like mirror worlds. Mars is the Red Planet. Earth is the pale blue dot. ___36___Earth is full of water and life. But there's another curious difference. The sky on Mars is red, while its sunsets are blue.
___37___ The light from the Sun scatters (散射) based on what’s in the atmosphere. Sunlight comprises light of many different wavelengths, and molecules and dust particles only interact with specific waves. The scattering of light by these particles is key to the color that we see.
Mars’ atmosphere is very thin — its pressure is equal to about 1 percent of Earth’s. It is made of carbon dioxide and has a lot of dust. This fine dust tends to scatter the red light so that the sky appears reddish, which lets the blue light through. On Earth, it is the other way around. ___38___
At sunset light has a longer distance to travel within the atmosphere, so it scatters more. ___39___ On Earth, we have a wider palette of reds, which is actually amplified (放大) by ash from volcanoes and dust from fires. On Mars, we get a cool blue hue.
Interestingly, Earth and Mars are the only two places in the Solar System that have sunsets that we can observe.
Mercury (水星) lacks an atmosphere so we would see the Sun disappear while the temperature goes from 427℃ to 173℃, as we shift from day side to night side. It also has a very long day, rotating on itself every 58 and a bit days. ___40___ The thick cloud cover and extremely dense atmosphere would stop the rays of the Sun from reaching us. And the high temperature and acid rain would easily melt our suits— and eventually our faces — off.
A. Mars is a freezing desert.
B. What is left is the color that we see.
C. Thus, traveling to Venus can be a wiser choice.
D. But going to Venus would be even worse.
E. Blue light bounces off air molecules giving our sky its characteristic color.
F. The reason behind this is similar to why our sky is blue and our sunsets are red.
G. It's molecules and dust particles that play the most important role in these phenomena.

Mohan was excited. His father had finally declared him old enough to help take the sheep to graze (放牧). Mohan and his father belonged to the Gaddi tribe of India. During the summer, the men moved high up into the mountains. For six long months, they stayed on the green pastures (牧场) with their sheep. It was not an easy life. Far away from home, the men were surrounded by forests that were filled with dangerous animals, such as bears, tigers and leopards (豹子).
As Mohan said goodbye to his mother and sister, he tried to look as grown up as possible. But he worried, “Will I be able to handle the challenges of life in the mountains ” “Mohan, take care of your father,” his mother said. “I will,” he replied, giving her a quick hug. Mohan, his father and their sheepdog, Sona, set off along the dusty track with their sheep. Soon they were joined by Kishan, their neighbour. Together they took their sheep northward.
After they climbed for three days, they received good news. A group of villagers coming down the mountain had seen meadows (草地) thick with grass only a day’s walk ahead. “But be careful,” one of them cautioned. “We have heard there is a leopard in that area.” Mohan’s father thanked him for the warning. The meadows proved perfect for grazing, and the sheep ate well. The next day as Mohan cleaned up after dinner, he hummed a happy tune to himself. His father and their neighbour Kishan had taken their sheep to different ends of the pasture. The sun was setting, and it was growing cold.
Suddenly, Sona started to bark. Mohan looked up to see his father’s sheep rushing down the slope. Something was wrong. He waited for the sheep to reach him. Then he turned to Sona and said, “Stay and guard the sheep. I must look for Father.” Mohan picked up a lantern and his shepherd staff and hurried to find his father. “Father, where are you ” he called out, while climbing up the slope. A steady voice answered, “I’m here.” Mohan saw his father lying in the ditch (沟渠), holding a lamb.

【原文】W: Adam, here is an interesting question from one of our listeners: What is something that you wish you could have done over For example, maybe something in your university life.
M: Well, there are a few things. I might change my major. I studied education, and I enjoy what I’m doing right now. But if I could go back to school and start over, I’d probably study chemistry or physics.
W: Interesting. Anything else you wish you would have done
M: I might have been more active in doing sports. I played football in high school, but in college, it seemed that there was nothing that could push me to actually go out and put my heart into it. I went to one training day and I felt kind of tired. I wish I hadn’t given up football so easily.
W: How about something that you did do but maybe now you wish you hadn't
M: I played video games a lot in high school because that was the cool thing to do, but I don’t play them now. And looking back on it, I think it’s just a waste of time to follow the trend.

Dear Allen,
I am writing to share with you an activity I was involved in last Saturday. Given your passion for our traditional culture, I believe you would undoubtedly appreciate the fantastic experience I had.
On the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, also known as the Double Ninth Festival, my classmates and I visited the local nursing home. Divided into several groups, we walked into the rooms of the old people, interacted with them and presented them with flowers to show our care and love. Subsequently, we did some cleaning and washing for them, followed by some performances, including singing songs, dancing and magic shows, which definitely kept them entertained.
For me this experience not solely served as an excellent way to show our respect to the senior but also gave us a deeper insight into our culture.
Have you had similar experience Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Just at that moment, Mohan heard a low, deep growl behind him. He turned around and found himself looking straight into the eyes of a leopard. A sudden rush of panic ruling him, he was frozen to the spot. “Mohan, use your lantern.” His father’s voice shook Mohan’s fear out of him. Mohan knew that he had to do something to save his own life. He quickly whipped off his shirt and hooked it onto his shepherd’s staff. Then he set the shirt on fire and ran shouting at the big cat.
Seeing the fire, the leopard leapt back in fear and then disappeared in the forest. Mohan put off the fire and then climbed into the ditch to get his father. He saw that his father had twisted his ankle. “Come, Father, hold on to my shoulder,” said Mohan. “I will help you climb out.” Mohan’s father put one arm around his son, holding the lamb with the other. Just then Kishan arrived with his dogs. “What happened ” he cried. Mohan’s father held tightly to Mohan. “Nothing,” he whispered. “Nothing that my son could not handle.”
