Ginny MacColl was 63 when she accepted her daughter’s challenge to complete a pull-up. It took nine months to nail it. Now, a decade on, MacColl can pump out 17 of them in a row. MacColl has since competed three times in the reality TV show. She’s the oldest person to complete an obstacle, according to Guinness World Records.
“When I grew up, women weren’t encouraged to lift weights,” MacColl says. Seeing her daughter, Jessie Graff, a stuntwoman (替身演员) in action, MacColl saw “such strength and grace – and she had muscles! I realized that the things people had always said about muscles were so wrong. It was a disservice to women.”
MacColl was enrolled in dance lessons by her parents, initially to draw her out of her shell. But in 1974, she landed a part in a Broadway show. She branched out into TV commercials during the 70s and 80s, acting as “a housewife and mum, smiling with my product beside me … Folgers coffee, Jordache jeans…” She got married and had two children, even shooting one commercial three days after giving birth.
But “all good things come to an end”, and MacColl got divorced after 13 years of marriage. However, the biggest obstacle she has overcome in life, MacColl says, is failure itself. She felt like a failure at school, when she and her classmates were lined up in order of their IQ scores, and also when her first marriage ended.
“It took me a while to get over that,” she says. “There’s a saying I like to tell myself: ‘Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.’ So I try to look at failure as a motivator. I will get this. Social media was my way of getting out of the depression. I started posting some of the things I could do.”
She has more than 130,000 followers on Instagram, and has landed parts in films. She has just filmed her next appearance on American Ninja Warrior. MacColl believes she can continue to get stronger into her 80s and 90s. “Muscle is the organ of longevity,” she says.
24. What made MacColl take up pull-ups
A. She was inspired by her daughter. B. She was eager to become an actress.
C. She wanted to prove her worth as a woman. D. She desired to break a Guinness world record.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. The busy life of a housewife. B. The popularity of TV commercials.
C. The golden time in MacColl’s career. D. MacColl’s daily routines as a celebrity.
26. How did MacColl get over her failure
A. By leaving it as it was. B. By making a mental shift.
C. By turning to social media. D. By drawing lessons from it.
27. What message does MacColl’s story convey
A. All’s well that ends well. B. Rome is not built in a day.
C. It’s never too late to get stronger. D. It takes courage to change one’s life.
C
When we think about invertebrates (无脊椎动物), most of us picture bees, worms, or perhaps even a jellyfish. But did you know that at least two-thirds of invertebrates work the night shift, meaning many are unlikely to be seen They use phases of the moon and star light to learn about the world and make vital decisions. Many insects use the faint glow of the moon or stars to tell which way is up when flying in complete darkness.
For centuries, artificial light has been a symbol of progress. Light has shaped human civilization. But while we celebrate its convenience, we often overlook the darker side of our obsession with illumination (照明): light pollution. It’s a disruptor of ecosystems, with profound consequences for wildlife, human health and energy consumption.
A 2021 study found that caterpillar populations were 52% lower in areas with street lights. The winter moth is a small but essential species. In early spring its caterpillars provide a critical food source for blue tit chicks. But light pollution disorients (使迷惑方向) the adult moths, disrupts mating and affects egg-laying, leading to fewer caterpillars. With declining caterpillar numbers, blue tits struggle to feed their young.
In one sense, light pollution is relatively easy to fix — we can simply not turn on the lights and allow the night to be lighted naturally by moonlight. Logically, this is mostly not feasible as lights are meant for the benefit of humans who are often unwilling to give them up. In the absence of turning off the lights, there are other management approaches we can take to lessen their impact. We can limit their number; reduce their intensity and the time they are on.
The extent to which invertebrates have responded to artificial light remains unspecified and it also remains unknown whether they can adapt to additional temporal changes. These changes likely affect individual fitness, so additional studies are needed to determine the selective pressure artificial light produces. An interdisciplinary (跨学科) approach is required to determine broader scale effects of artificial light on wildlife biodiversity and ecosystem health, and to determine relevant strategies.
28. What do we know about the majority of invertebrates
A. They are active at night. B. They use darkness to hide.
C. They are becoming extinct. D. They are intelligent creatures.
29. What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning caterpillar populations in paragraph 3
A. The challenge in wildlife conservation. B. The importance of a balanced ecosystem.
C. The urgency of saving species through food. D. The effect of light pollution on the food chain.
30. What does the underlined word “feasible” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Odd. B. Workable. C. Crazy. D. Disturbing.
31. What does the author think of potential management approaches
A. They are pioneering. B. They are easy to apply.
C. They prove to be effective. D. They call for in-depth research.
D
Even people who have never read Tolstoy are often familiar with his famous opening line to Anna Karenina: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The quote is so well known because it resonates (共鸣) with people’s experience, and psychologists have investigated if it might apply to the individual as well as the collective.
A team led by Dr Yanagisawa Kuniaki of Kobe University combined approaches used in psychology and neuroscience by challenging 87 people to imagine specific future events happening to them while lying in an fMRI machine. The sample group was purposely chosen to include people with a mix of future expectations.
The team found participants who were more optimistic showed greater similarities in the patterns of their brain activity in a region involved in future-oriented thinking. Meanwhile, pessimists’ brains produced different maps from each other when given the same stimuli. “We’re not saying that optimists have identical thoughts about the future,” said Yanadisawa. “Rather, we can say that they appear to think in the same way — structurally.”
The researchers also found that optimistic people showed bigger differences between brain patterns for emotionally positive and negative events than pessimists did.
Many past studies have revealed benefits to optimism such as better health. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that optimism is a good trait and pessimism is a bad one. The research revealed something that might give us pause. Optimism isn’t an unquestioned good. Any ancient human population composed entirely of optimists probably died crossing rivers because they convinced themselves there would be no crocodiles or starved because they didn’t prepare for bad seasons. This work also hints at the possibility that the individuality that comes with pessimism lends itself to more diverse approaches to problems, with a greater chance that one will succeed than the optimists who all try the same thing.
“The brains of optimists may in a very physical sense share a common concept of the future. But this raises new questions. Is this shared mechanism something they are born with or is it woven in later ” Yanagisawa pondered (沉思). He ultimately believes this work can help us better understand how people relate to each other and what sometimes prevents empathy.
32. Why does the author quote the opening line to Anna Karenina
A. To recommend Tolstoy’s book. B. To introduce the research topic.
C. To share Tolstoy’s insights into life. D. To unlock its philosophical wisdom.
33. It can be learnt from the research that when imagining future events, ______.
A. pessimists tend to be emotional B. optimists have the same thoughts
C. pessimists expect negative outcomes D. optimists think alike in a structural sense
34. What can be implied from paragraph 5
A. Pessimists are effective problem solvers. B. Pessimists have a better perception of life.
C. Optimism and pessimism are interchangeable. D. Optimism can be damaging when taken to extreme.
35. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph
A. Expectations for future study. B. Potential application of the findings.
C. A reasonable doubt about the findings. D. A summary of the previous paragraphs.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every student at Oakridge High knew that Michael was struggling. His family had recently moved to a smaller apartment across town after his father was laid off from work. The financial pressures at home cast a shadow over everything he did.
Each morning, he arrived at Oakridge High wearing the same faded jeans and worn-out sneakers. Where he once participated eagerly in class discussions, he now sat in the back row, hoping to escape notice. He found himself staring blankly at the whiteboard, unable to focus. The numbers blurred together as worries about his family’s situation crowded his mind.
Mr. Evans, a teacher with twenty years of experience, recognized the signs immediately. After class, he asked Michael to stay for a moment. “I know you’re going through a difficult time,” Mr. Evans said, his voice filled with genuine concern. “But remember this: difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. The struggle you’re facing today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.” He placed a reassuring hand on Michael’s shoulder. “This temporary setback doesn’t define you—it’s preparing you. I’ve seen your potential, and I believe in you even when you might not believe in yourself.”
Their after-school sessions became regular. He taught Michael how to break down complex problems into manageable steps — a strategy that applied not just to mathematics but to life’s challenges as well. Most importantly, he consistently emphasized Michael’s capabilities, rebuilding the confidence that had been eroded (侵蚀) by recent difficulties.
As weeks passed, Michael’s performance began to improve dramatically. He started arriving early for their sessions, often with questions prepared in advance. The frustration that once clouded his expression was replaced by determination. In class, he began raising his hand again, offering solutions to problems that challenged other students.
注意:(1)写作词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

Para 2: After the award presentation, Michael went to Mr. Evans’s office.2025学年第一学期江浙皖高中(县中)发展共同体高三年级 10月联考

读后续写
One possible version:
The true test came with the annual mathematics competition. The mathematics competition was intense, with
the brightest students from across the district competing. Michael focused intently, recalling Mr. Evans’s strategies
as he solved each problem. When the results were announced, he felt a surge of disbelief and joy upon hearing his
name called for second place. Walking to the stage to receive his certificate, he saw Mr. Evans applauding proudly
in the audience, giving him a thumbs-up. That moment of recognition meant more to Michael than the award
itself.
After the award presentation, Michael went to Mr. Evans’s office. He found Mr. Evans was buried in grading
students’ assignments. He approached his teacher, holding the certificate with visible emotion. “Thank you for
everything, sir,” Michael said sincerely. Mr. Evans responded with a warm smile, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“You earned this through your own determination,” he replied quietly. “Remember that challenges are merely
opportunities in disguise.” The brief exchange conveyed profound gratitude and pride, capturing the essence of
their special student-teacher bond.
