The Myna That Parrots Others
The myna is a small bird that lives in southern China. It is dexterous, lovely and smart, especially with a strong talent for language.
People like the myna’s docility, so they often catch it and build beautiful cages for it to live in, and feed it delicious food. Living with humans day by day, the myna gradually developed a strong interest in human language. “What beautiful language! What wonderful songs!” Every time it heard humans speak or sing, it would always sigh like this. Therefore, consciously or unconsciously, the myna began to learn to speak like humans. “H- H- Hello- Hello”, “S- Sorry”, “G- Good- Good morning”, “T- Thank- Thank you”... Although these were all simple sentences, and it spoke them unclearly, humans were still surprised by its vivid “language”. They gradually became eager to train it to speak more words and treated it even better.
Seeing that humans liked it so much for learning to speak, the myna was extremely happy. It worked hard to learn, thinking that this was the most beautiful language, and no other language could compare with it. So it chirped these words in the morning and evening, but they were always the same simple ones: “Hello”, “Sorry”, “Thank you” — nothing new at all. Being able to speak human language made the myna feel very proud. It often liked to show off in front of its animal friends, fearing that others would not know how special it was. As time went by, all the animals would run away from it as soon as they saw it.
One day, a cicada was practicing its singing carefully in the yard. When the myna heard it, it casually laughed at the cicada: “Why is your singing so unpleasant Let you listen to mine!” Then it began to imitate human speech, intoxicated with itself, but it was still just those few sentences. The cicada was not angry; instead, it said to the myna calmly, “You can imitate human speech, and it sounds very nice — we all admire you. But what you say is not your own words; in fact, there is no real meaning in them. My singing may not be as pleasant as your words, but every sound I make expresses my own thoughts!” The cicada spoke slowly and gently. As the myna listened, it lowered its head in shame. “The cicada is right,” it thought to itself. “I have nothing to show off about at all.” From then on, the myna never imitated human speech again.
Moral
It is not advisable to be like the myna — blindly imitating others, repeating what others say, having no real ability or original ideas, yet still showing off everywhere. The cicada bravely made its own sounds to express its thoughts. Even if its singing was not pleasant, what did that matter
