How to make a good first impression at high school
High school’s starting soon, and I want to make a good first impression. I’m a little afraid because I’m short and weigh a bit too much and sometimes people make fun of me for that. Can anyone give me any advice on how to act during my first weeks, or what kind of clothes to wear, etc.

I really suggest being kind and outgoing. It is better to be really social and introduce yourself. You won’t get any where being shy.
Your weight really doesn’t matter. If you’re really that uncomfortable with it, try working out.

Don’t worry about your weight, and don’t let it get you down. “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Remember that. Concentrate on schoolwork. Be nice, polite, and stay strong. Don’t wear the ‘in’ clothes just because everybody else does. Wear clothes for YOU. Try babydoll tops and flats; they’re very nice and work for almost all body types (类型).

Freshman (九年级学生) year, just ended for me a few months ago!
Take it from me, the best thing for you to do is be nice to everyone. If someone isn’t nice to you, don’t take it personally. Try out for sports and clubs, and you’ll soon make new friends.

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related(有关的) math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “T can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes.
Though my story is not one of overnight successes and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding me, “Kate, smile! It’s a-great day to be alive!”
24. What does the underlined word“ aversion” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Interest. B. Responsibility. C. Dislike. D. Misunderstanding.
25. What first made the author look forward to math class
A. Mr. A's attitude.
B. Her interest in math.
C. Her friends' encouragement.
D. The top achievers in her class.
26. How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A
A. It was straight B. It was awkward.
C. It was challenging. D. It was impressive.
27. How did the author change in math
A. She made slow progress.
B. She fell in love with math.
C. She became a straight-A math student
D. She became comfortable with difficult math questions.

With people aging, there are benefits(优势) of having them in nursing- home care over living on their own or with family. Nursing homes provide overall care: Daily care helps seniors stay healthy and happy longer and the special care focused on their personal health problems makes them more comfortable.
However, there are some downsides. Many seniors living there slowly lose independence and feel short of emotional( 感情的) support, which results in depression. and loneliness. This is especially common for seniors who have lost partners. They don't get enough encouragement, to stay happy or confident.
This is where pets come in. There are many benefits that seniors can get from having pets in a nursing home.
One of the advantages is the health support that pets provide. Having a pet is a great way to stop feeling lonely or anxious, because they provide love and companionship no matter what's going on in seniors ’ life. Pets are fun and can cheer up seniors if they have a difficult day. Studies have shown that the emotional benefits of having a pet can translate into bodily benefits: Many people find they become sick less for keeping a pet. Pets naturally lessen anxiety, which is often the cause in the development of health problems. Animals also give seniors an organized life. The schedule of having to feed, clean and play with a pet helps seniors stay active.
Having animals in a nursing home encourages social community behavior. Many seniors lose socializing as they get older, but social interaction is very important for overall health. Having pets around gives seniors an easy way to interact with each other, and can even result in strong friendships. This will greatly improve the senior's overall experience in the nursing home.
Because of the obvious results that pets can bring to senior’s lives, many experts are recommending nursing homes to start pet- friendly programs.
28. Why nursing- home care has advantages over living alone for seniors
A. It offers daily care. B. It offers all- round care.
C. It offers special care. D. It offers comfortable care.
29. What does the underlined word “depression” mean
A. Sadness. B. Excitement C. Awkwardness. D. Annoyance.
30. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. Pets help keep seniors fitter. B. Pets add seniors' enjoyment.
C. Pets help keep seniors active. D. Pets improve senior's confidence
31. Where can the text be found
A. In a math book. B. In a science story. C. In a life magazine. D. In a history book.

Among many high-tech tools that students often use is Smart Planner. The online tool helps students choose the courses they need to meet their degree requirements.
Smart Planner makes suggestions on guiding students to choose the future courses- depending on information from their records in UAccess Student—such as the number of changing credits they have, their test scores and what courses they’ ve taken.
The tool helps students plan their course schedule based on their needs and provides connections to course lists so students can choose classes based on their descriptions. Smart Planner can be used by students through UAccess Student and by parents who’ ve been allowed through the UAccess Guest Center.
“Smart Planner helps the students and the advisers have more communication, ” said Kathy Godwin, assistant(助理) director of course affairs(事务) in the UA Office of Academic Affairs. One of the main purposes of Smart Planner is to get students and advisers to understand details such as credit requirements and deadlines in a similar way before they meet in person.
“The idea is not to put Smart Planner in place of the advisers. Instead, with it, we are trying to create a tool that makes the communication with the advisers more meaningful and to make sure students realize all the chances on campus, like information in Career Services or chances in research.” That frees up scheduled time to have more discussion about everyone's situation and students' education and job programs.
Smart Planner updates automatically(自动地) whenever changes are made to it. Its forward- looking abilities help students see where they are going and how they are going there. Smart Planner works like a checklist, with all the courses and requirements in order, and makes it easier for students to check them online than a paper list.
32. Why is Smart Planner useful
A. It provides help for students at home.
B. It gives students suggestions on keeping fit.
C. It helps students communicate with each other.
D. It helps students make choices on their required courses.

A. It takes the place of advisers.

34. What does the author think 6 of Smart Planner

Dear Tony,
I'm glad to learn you' re coming to my school next week as an international exchange student. You are interested in how we typically show respect for our teachers and here are something detailed.
Firstly, it is on September 10th every year that all teachers and students gather in the school hall to celebrate Teachers' Day,where by tradition Top Ten Teachers of the Year are selected to receive meaningful awards. Student representatives send gifts such as bunches of flowers, postcards to show our sincere gratitude and best wishes to our teachers. What's more, we greet our teachers respectfully wherever and whenever we meet. Besides, we often take turns to help clean and tidy the teachers' office voluntarily.
I hope you' ll have a wonderful experience in our school.
Yours,
Li Hua
