Ji Chang Learns to Shoot Arrows
In ancient times, there was a famous top archer in China named Gan Ying. His archery skills were extremely superb! Whenever he drew his bow, the wild beasts in the forest would be shot down at once. When he aimed his bow and arrow at the birds flying in the sky—no matter how high they flew—once the arrow left the bow, the birds would immediately fall from the sky. Over time, everyone in the town praised him for never missing a shot; every arrow he fired hit its target. Crowds of people came to learn archery from him. Among them was a man named Fei Wei, who sincerely asked Gan Ying to be his teacher. Gan Ying saw that Fei Wei was very smart and well-suited for learning archery, so he focused on training him. Fei Wei studied diligently—practicing even in the hottest summer and coldest winter. Truly, a great teacher produces a great student. In less than two years, Fei Wei had fully mastered archery skills, even surpassing his teacher. Gradually, Fei Wei became more and more famous.
Ji Chang, Fei Wei's neighbor, also loved archery, but no matter how hard he practiced, his skills didn't improve much. When he heard about Fei Wei's story, he was greatly inspired. He thought there must be some secrets he didn't know, so he made up his mind to find Fei Wei and learn archery from him.
One day, he went to Fei Wei's house and said seriously to him: “I admire how well you've mastered archery. I also love archery, but I've been practicing for years and haven't made any progress. So I beg you to teach me archery. Will you agree ” Fei Wei saw that Ji Chang was very sincere and wholeheartedly devoted to archery, so he was happy to teach him. But he only said casually: “To fully master the skill of archery, you have to start with the basics. It will be very boring!” When Ji Chang heard that Fei Wei was willing to teach him, he quickly said: “As long as I can shoot arrows well, I'm not afraid of boredom or hardship.” Fei Wei highly approved of Ji Chang's eager attitude towards learning, so he taught him: “First, you need to practice not blinking your eyes. Only when you can keep your eyes wide open without blinking can you start learning to shoot arrows.”
After listening, Ji Chang said goodbye to his teacher, but he kept his teacher's words firmly in mind. When he got home, he lay on his back under his wife's weaving machine, opened his eyes wide, and stared fixedly at the foot pedal that moved up and down, without moving his eyes at all. An hour passed, two hours passed—he didn't know how much time had gone by, but he still watched carefully. Bolt after bolt of cloth moved under the weaving machine. Several times, scraps of cloth almost fell into Ji Chang's eyes, and even the tip of a awl (a sharp tool) almost pricked his eyes, but he controlled himself and didn't let his eyes blink even once. In the blink of an eye, two years passed. Sure enough, his eyes were trained to the level Fei Wei had mentioned—he could keep them from blinking at any time. Overjoyed, he ran to his teacher to report this good news. Fei Wei only said calmly: “That's good, but you've just taken the first step. Your skills are not yet good enough. You must continue to train your eyesight—keep practicing until you can see small things as big and blurry things as e back to me then!”
The teacher didn't praise him at all for his hard work, so Ji Chang felt a little disappointed. But he quickly thought: “The teacher is doing this for my own good. Maybe I really haven't done well enough.” To learn archery, he decided to be down-to-earth and practice step by step strictly according to his teacher's instructions. After adjusting his mindset, Ji Chang went home again.
This time, he was even more serious. To meet his teacher's requirements, he found a yak hair, tied a louse to it, and hung it on the window. Facing south, he stared at it without taking his eyes off it every day. The yak hair was so thin that you could barely see anything if you didn't look carefully; and the louse was so small that it was not noticeable at all when hung on the thin hair. But to master archery well, Ji Chang practiced facing it, not afraid of hardship or boredom. Ten days passed, and the small louse gradually seemed to grow bigger in his eyes. Soon, three years passed. When Ji Chang looked at the small louse again, it seemed as big as a cartwheel! At that time, when he looked at other things bigger than the louse, each of them looked like a small hill. He could hardly contain his joy, so he took a bow made of horn from northern Yan State and an arrow made in southern Chu State, and shot at the louse. The arrow hit the center of the louse perfectly, but the yak hair holding the louse was not broken at all.
Ji Chang was extremely happy. He didn't even bother to put down his bow and arrow—he ran to Teacher Fei Wei to report this. Teacher Fei Wei listened carefully to Ji Chang's practice process and kept nodding. When he finally heard that Ji Chang had hit the small louse, he even jumped up with joy and said excitedly: “You have truly mastered the essence of archery! You don't need a teacher anymore!”
Moral
To master solid skills, we must practice the basics hard, persevere, and make great efforts. This is the truth behind the idea of “studying diligently and practicing hard.”
