Today, about 50% of people in the world wear glasses. But how much do you know about glasses
No one knows who made the first set of glasses. However, it’s sure that they were first made in the 13th century. By the 14th century, eyeglasses had spread (传播) across Europe, becoming a symbol of being rich. They were still made by hand and quite expensive. Glasses appeared around the same time in Italy and China. Early glasses weren’t made of glass. Most glass at that time was not clear, so it couldn’t work well for glasses.
Glasses didn’t look much like modern (现代的) glasses until the 1700s. That’s when people put ear stems (耳柄) to keep glasses on their faces. Around this time, reading and writing became more popular.
People didn’t start seeing eye doctors for glasses before the 1800s. At that time, they just tried on different pairs of glasses before they found a better one. Then eye doctors appeared and changed that. They gave an eye test for people to tell which pair they needed.
★ One big change was bifocal (双光眼镜) in 1784. This made glasses help people see things that are both far away and very near. Sunglasses are about as old as glasses. People in China started wearing sunglasses in the 12th century. Today, many people also wear contact lenses (隐形眼镜). However, you should always take your contact lenses out at night.
Today, eyeglasses have become more than tools for seeing more clearly. And some people wear glasses with no lenses at all. This is called fashion glasses. They come in many colors and sizes to meet anyone’s personal need.
A short and colorful road goes through the history of eyeglasses, from their easy beginnings to their modern-day changes. Isn’t it wonderful how a simple pair of glasses has helped us to see the world so clearly

A team of students in Holland has planned and built a strong car that’s powered (驱动) by the sun. It is the first solar (太阳的)-powered car that can travel off-road for a long way without needing a charging station (充电站).
The car they invented is called Stella Terra. There are solar panels (太阳板) on the top of the car. Most solar panels are only about 20% efficient (有效的). That means they waste about 80% of the sunlight they get. But the Stella Terra’s solar panels are 97% efficient. They waste far less sunlight than even the best solar panels you can buy.
Like most electric cars, Stella Terra stores energy (能量) in a battery (电池). Thanks to its powerful solar panels and its battery, when it’s sunny, the car can run for 710 kilometers a day.
The team recently took the car on its biggest test—a challenging 1,000-kilometer test drive across Morocco. It had to drive across desert sand and up mountain roads. The car succeeded in doing all without ever stopping at a charging station.
Although they get the success, the students think it will take 5 to 10 years before car factories are able to build a similar car. “We are making the improvement of technology (科技) and we believe that Stella Terra shows the future way that new energy cars will go to,” said Wisse Bos, one student from the team.

81.例文
My best Friend
Hi, everyone! Here I’ll share something about my best friend Mary. She is taller than me but both of us have very short hair. She is more outgoing than me. She likes to play sports and tell jokes, and I like to play the piano.
For TV programs, we are different. I love watching the news and talk shows, because I can learn a lot from them. Mary doesn’t mind them, but she likes the sitcoms best. She thinks she can learn some great jokes from them.
One day I wanted to copy her math homework, but to my surprise, she didn’t agree. She said, “It’s wrong to copy others’ homework. If you have difficulty, I can help you.” Her words made me feel warm. From then on she helped me with my math every day. With her help, I made great progress in math.
That’s all! Thank you for listening to me!
