By fourth grade, I stood taller than my classmates — and even my teacher, Miss Liston. Unfortunately, my height far outpaced both my coordination (协调性) and academic skills. I became the class clown, struggling with arithmetic, spelling, and reading. Recess (课间休息) was worse: while peers raced through games and sports, I stumbled over my own feet — Clumsy was my middle name.
Each afternoon, Miss Liston concluded the day by reading to the class for fifteen minutes. I’d sigh with relief at the end of another embarrassing day, losing myself in her voice and the story, usually a chapter from a novel. If I could read with ease I could find my way to happier places and times. Miss Liston apparently noticed my absorbed attention. I don’t remember how she took me under her wing but by the time I moved on to fifth grade I was reading at an eighth-grade level. My self-image, self-esteem, and life path were changed forever.
In my junior year of college, I dropped out. I took a job as a newspaper reporter, only to discover that while I had a desire to be a journalist, I lacked both the education and talent to succeed. Five years of struggling to craft a single good sentence were enough — I quit writing. But I couldn’t survive on hunger or good looks, so I trained as a registered nurse.
One evening, an ambulance delivered an elderly woman who’d suffered a stroke. As I approached, the medical assistant reported: “Seventy-eight-year-old Agnes Liston, found at home by neighbors...” I recognized Miss Liston’s slackened face. I smiled softly, “Hello, Miss Liston. It’s Tommy Schwarz. Do you remember me ” She stared, her facial muscles twitching faintly.
I learned she’d outlived her family and friends; no one visited during her hospitalization. For three days, I sat by her bedside, reading aloud. She couldn’t communicate, but her calm demeanor (举止) suggested comfort. I felt privileged to give back in a direct and personal way to someone who had loved and helped me so much.
24. What can be inferred about the author in fourth grade
A. He had a sense of being out of place. B. He didn’t get along well with others.
C. He preferred to act as a funny clown. D. He was proud of his physical advantage.
25. How did Miss Liston influence the author’s life
A. She inspired his career in nursing. B. She unlocked his potential for reading.
C. She taught him to embrace his uniqueness. D. She helped him resolve family conflicts.
26. Why did the author abandon his career as a journalist
A. He lost interest in current events. B. He was offered a better-paying job.
C. He couldn’t handle the work pressure. D. He failed to develop essential writing skills.
27. What made reading to Miss Liston a meaningful experience for the author
A. It reminded him of the joy of reading. B. It helped him reconnect with his childhood.
C. It gave him a chance to repay her kindness. D. It allowed him to showcase his nursing skills.

To know body language better, Christina Stach, a 25-year-old healthcare provider, read What Everybody Is Saying by Joe Navarro. “It changed how I communicated with everyone,” she says. While approximately 80% of our interactions with each other are nonverbal — from birth, our body language sends out clues to what we’re thinking, and Stach says, “We can learn to exercise control over it.”
Becoming aware of her own body language, the physician recognized her preferred way of sitting with her arms and legs crossed. While it was comfortable for her, patients considered it discomfort with them. She found the same to be true with eye contact. “I don’t make much eye contact with people because it makes me uncomfortable,” Stach says, “but it makes others think I’m inattentive.”
Armed with the knowledge, she began uncrossing her arms and legs and making more eye contact when in conversation, “Using positive body language helps strengthen patient interactions, and once these habits become natural, you may notice your patients are more receptive to your advice,” she says.
“Talking with patients at eye level is important,” Stach says. “It shows them that I’m here to listen to what they have to say and to make joint decisions about their healthcare.” She recommends that physicians lower their eye level as much as possible by sitting on a low chair facing their patient while the patient remains seated on the exam table.
Eye contact is another important element. “If you’re typing notes into your computer without looking at your patients — even if you are listening and can say everything they said, your body says you aren’t listening,” Stach says. “And you no longer have a closed space of attention with each other.”
Anyway, body language can send a message of care and trust, “In medicine, we’re often in our patient’s face during a medical exam, but when talking with them, being too close may be intrusive, especially in Western cultures where we have broader personal body comfortable distance,” Stach notes. “But in Eastern cultures that distance is much narrower. So, when interacting with people from these cultures, stepping back is seen as offensive(冒犯) — that’s something to keep in mind.”
28. How did Christina Stach get better at using body language
A. By keeping practicing it in her family. B. By reading a related book.
C. By learning a lot from professionals. D. By communicating with patients.
29. Why did Christina Stach change her sitting posture and eye contact
A. To achieve better care results. B. To feel more personally comfortable.
C. To show her professional skills. D. To enhance her specialized knowledge.
30. What is Christina Stach’s suggestion for physicians talking with patients
A. Avoiding frequent eye contact. B. Making decisions for the patients.
C. Repeating everything the patients said. D. Positioning themselves on lowered seats.
31. What does the underlined word “intrusive” in the last paragraph mean
A. Relaxing. B. Comfortable. C. Disturbing. D. Formal.
D
Faced with biodiversity loss worldwide, protected areas are set aside to provide wildlife with a safe space. Conservationists often focus on species counts when measuring success. But are these protected areas doing enough to preserve the entire structure of ecosystems This question is at the heart of a new study from Swansea University.
The relationships between organisms play a key role in ecological balance. That a hawk (鹰) hunts smaller birds or a songbird feeding on insects reflects interactions that keep ecosystems working. To figure out if protected areas help keep this ecological balance, the Swansea team examined the structure of food webs. They used data from platforms like eBird, where volunteers record bird sightings. This allowed the experts to track 509 bird species across 45 ecological networks from Spain to Finland.
Using this large database, the team combined observational bird records with known predator-prey (捕食者-猎物) links. For example, if a hawk feeds on smaller birds, that relationship was mapped. The team compared food webs inside protected areas to those in surrounding non- protected areas. They also looked at habitat diversity, the percentage of forest and agricultural land, and levels of human pressure.
The networks inside protected areas tended to have more species overall. Intermediate-level species were more common. Also, predators inside protected areas tended to be larger in body size, both at the top and middle levels of the food web.
However, the length of food chains and the connectivity of species within the web did not show consistent improvement. Generally, areas that were more remote or had higher habitat diversity had healthier food webs. Human pressure and the amount of nearby farmland had a strong influence, too. Interestingly, areas under the European Bird Directives showed stronger positive trends. This suggests clearer conservation planning makes a difference.
The research shows relationships between species are equally vital. Protecting one bird species is good. Ensuring that it still plays its ecological role — as predator, prey or pollinator (传粉者) — is better. Conservation needs to think about networks, not just the number of species saved.
32. Why did the Swansea team examine the structure of food webs
A. To understand the effectiveness of conservation efforts.
B. To show the consequence of human pressure on wildlife.
C. To prove the position of predators in ecosystems.
D. To test the species counts in protected areas.
33. How was the finding of protected areas according to paragraph 4
A. Worrying. B. Unsatisfactory. C. Encouraging. D. Regretful.
34. What caused the food web differences
A. The local culture. B. The environmental factor.
C. Financial support. D. People’s safety awareness.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Future of Global Biodiversity
B. The Direction of Protected Areas in Conservation
C. The Purpose of Species Counts in Ecological Balance
D. The Importance of Species Relationships in Ecosystems

Try light exercise while you study
A few studies have shown that performing light exercise while studying can help recall of information. These studies found that vigorous exercise while studying may hurt recall because your brain is focused on the workout instead of the information. ____37____ You can use the stationary bike while you study for at least half an hour, making sure to keep the intensity light.
Exercise at your desk.
You can get your blood pumping at your desk while you study. If you don’t want to leave everything and go for a quick 15-minute stroll, try getting some physical activity in where you are. Do some chair squats at your desk. ____38____ Hover just above the chair for about 10 seconds. Repeat this 20 times.
Take a walk on breaks.
If you are studying in the library, break up your study sessions with physical activity. ____39____ You can also do this if you are studying in your dorm or a coffee shop. Taking a break helps refresh yourself and gets blood flowing to the brain, which can help you think and remember better.
____40____
Consistent daily workouts, integrated with your study and class schedule, are more effective than cramming 150 minutes of physical activity into the weekend. Regular physical activity throughout the week enhances brain function when you need it most — during your study sessions — rather than isolating it to the weekend.
A. Focus on consistency.
B. Make the exercise an enjoyable experience.
C. Stand up from your chair, and then squat down without sitting down.
D. If you are going to exercise while studying, just make sure to keep it gentle.

Sunlight was my alarm as I rose to prepare for my morning coffee. I looked out into our living area where my son and my husband, Jon, were asleep. I smiled as the traveling life wove our family together from separate pieces of cloth into a quilted piece of art.
I thought back to our old life. Jon worked over forty hours a week as the only IT person for the bank and its eleven branches. I also worked in a company that was very demanding. Jon had his work schedules and I had my work plans, so we hardly had time to keep up with my son’s public schooling. Our son was very dissatisfied with us and our relationship was at a breaking point. Therefore, I talked with Jon seriously, deciding to do something for it during the summer vacation.
Then our life fit into 200 square feet of living space in this motorhome and a 5×7 storage unit. With such limited storage space something new came in only if something old went out. We had more time to accompany our son. “Morning, Mom,” my little son greeted me. “I remember I have a composition needed to finish today, but I am at a loss for ideas and I don’t know how to do it,” he added.
“Oh, honey, I think we can think of an idea together after breakfast,” I kissed him.
As the sweet-smelling coffee filled the motorhome, I glanced at my son’s notebook page titled “My Best Adventure”. After breakfast, my son and I sat at the table to discuss his composition. He chewed on the end of his pencil, frowning (皱眉). Though Jon joined us and offered some advice, he still seemed to be at a loss. “Mom, I still don’t know how to write about ‘My Best Adventure’,” he said sadly. I touched his hair gently. Then suddenly, an idea occurred to me.

Dear Ted,
I hope this email finds you well! I’m thrilled that we’re teaming up for our school’s creativity competition themed “Technology Empowers Traditional Chinese Culture.”
I’ve been brainstorming a idea: using AR technology to showcase ancient Chinese architecture like the Forbidden City’s palaces. When people scan a special card with their phones, 3D models of the buildings will pop up, and they can “walk through” the halls, even seeing details like traditional carvings—this way, they’ll feel fully immersed in the culture’s charm.
What do you think of this plan Do you have any suggestions to make it better, like adding more interactive features I’d love to hear your ideas!
Yours,
Li Hua

“Let’s all go on an adventure right now!” I suggested. Then my son, Jon and I grabbed our backpacks and headed to the nearby forest trail. The morning sunlight filtered through the trees, casting shadows on the path. As we walked, my son pointed out a family of deer jumping across the clearing. “Look, Mom and Dad! They’re just like us — traveling together!” he exclaimed, eyes sparkling. We spent the morning collecting leaves, chasing butterflies, and listening to birds singing in the trees. By afternoon, his notebook was filled with sketches and notes.
That evening, my son’s pencil flew across his notebook. “Today I have learned adventure isn’t just about big trips. It’s when Dad and Mom took me to the forest. It’s waking up every day with my family, exploring new things together. Even our tiny home feels like an adventure because we’re all in it.” As he read it aloud, our tiny motorhome felt enormous — not with things, but with the quiet magic of being truly together. I watched him, feeling grateful for this precious moment and the adventure we were sharing together.
