To truly help our planet, we need to connect with it. And the good news is you don’t have to be a qualified expert to support the cause. Here are some of the many incredible projects looking for volunteers.
The Great UK WaterBlitz
This twice-a-year campaign from the FreshWater Wash aims to assess water quality across the UK. The next one runs from 25 — 28 April 2025, and asks volunteers to record the water quality in local freshwater sources. To help in the upcoming campaign, simply register your interest at earthwatch.org.uk/greatukwaterblitz to receive more information, along with your own water testing kit.
Nature’s Calendar
This initiative by the Woodland Trust looks to track seasonal shifts and patterns, to see how climate change is affecting our ecosystems. The easy, three-step process requires you to pick a species and behaviour, decide the area you’re recording, and make a note on the online system of the dates of these actions. Get involved by visiting the woodlandtrust.org.uk.
Big Butterfly Count
Scheduled between 18 July and 10 August in 2025, involvement in this project run by Butterfly Conservation is more important than ever, as the 2024 results indicate a significant drop of these beautiful biodiversity indicators. Participants are asked to spend 15 minutes every day recording butterflies they see, either via their website tracker or app. Head to bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org to join in.
The Big Garden Birdwatch
Organised by RSPB, the world’s largest garden wildlife survey runs in January each year, and asks volunteers to sign up to simply watch their gardens for an hour each day, recording the birds they see. In 2024, more than 600,000 people participated in the UK, and recorded an incredible 9.7 million birds. Visit rspb.org.uk for more details.

Laurie Horam never thought of himself as musical. At home his dad never listened to music, while one of his boarding school teachers labelled him tone deaf. But last month he started to play the harmonica (口琴)on the streets of Bradford. People clapped, danced and threw coins into his case for the local food bank. Horam caught himself thinking. “How, at the age of 79, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets ”
The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a family gathering, Gavin, his eldest son, said: “You know what, Dad It can’t be coincidental. We must have got our musical abilities from you.” Horam has three sons and they cover a range of instruments. He was surprised. “There can’t be music in me, because I can’t play! ”he said.
Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was on his way back from a trip with his family. Gavin stopped at a music shop. He walked out and said: “Here you are. I bought this for you, Dad. It’s a harmonica. I’ll try to show you how to play a bit.”
They went to a session at their local pub. Gavin played the guitar and Horam sat in the corner with his harmonica, trying to make a sound that no one would hear. After six months, he was invited into the group. He discovered a talent for improvisation(即兴表演),responding to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid. “I don’t play by ear. I play by heart.” Actually, Horam says: “My harmonica plays me-how I feel, what I am, what I’ve been.”
Music has enriched life with friendship and made Horam feel “part of something much bigger” than himself. “At a time when the circle of life might be shrinking, mine is expanding,” he says. “Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can do.”
4. Why did Horam play the harmonica on the streets of Bradford
A. To recall the good old days.
B. To beg food from passers-by.
C. To live his childhood dream.
D. To collect money for charity.
5. What is Gavin’s attitude to his father’s musical ability
A. Positive.
B. Disapproving.
C. Doubtful.
D. Unclear.
6. What does playing the harmonica allow Horam to do
A. Enjoy the quiet.
B. Listen to his heart.
C. Express himself.
D. Sharpen his hearing.
7. What does music bring to Horam
A. A lost soul.
B. A comfortable life.
C A broader circle of life.
D. A new perception of family.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. C

The American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once wrote: “Music is the universal language of mankind.” Music is everywhere. But why do we like it so much One idea is that we quickly learn the patterns of music, and our brains feel rewarded when they can “guess” what will come next. But it may go deeper than that.
Neural resonance (神经共振) theory, or NRT, proposes that, just as our body’s internal clock corresponds with the light and dark cycles of the Earth, our brains actually correspond with the pitch and rhythm of music. This may be why we enjoy music so much and why we can dance, keep time with a song, and even compose music. Edward W. Large says this isn’t just an abstract idea. “It’s literally the sound causing a physical resonance in the brain,” he told UConn Today.
Along with other researchers from the US, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada, Large recently explained the principles of NRT. The researchers note, for example, that there’s evidence of our brains continuing to react to musical harmonies even after the sounds have stopped. And scans have shown activity in the brain that correlates with keeping time with music, even if the music doesn’t actually have a regular beat the listener can hear.
According to NRT, this resonance is what makes us want to move and dance and music connects not just to our ears and our brains, but even to our limbs and our spinal cords (脊髓). “This theory suggests that music is powerful not just because we hear it, but because our brains and bodies become it,” said Caroline Palmer, one of the researchers. “That has big implications for medical application, education and technology,” Palmer said.
The researchers say that NRT can give us insight into how the brain and body are connected, how music communicates emotion and how our understanding of the effects of music could be applied to brain health in the future.
8. What might explain why humans enjoy music according to paragraph 1
A. Brain’s reward from music. B. Its emotional expression.
C. Longfellow’s famous quote. D. Its universal popularity.
9. What do we know about NRT
A. It is about the day-night cycle. B. It tells us how to listen to music.
C. It shows brain-music link. D. It guides music composition.
10. What does the underlined phrase “correlates with” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Leads to. B. Corresponds with. C. Disagrees with. D. Applies to.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. NRT: An Answer to Musical Harmonies.
B. Music: The Universal Language of Mankind.

D. Brain Health: A Futuristic Trend in Medical Science.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. C

While Matt Damon relied on potatoes cultivated in biowaste to survive in the hit film The Martian, the researchers say it is a humble desert moss (藓类) that might prove crucial to establishing life on Mars.
Scientists in China say they have found Syntrichia caninervis — a moss found in the Antarctic and desert — is able to bear Mars-like conditions, including drought, high levels of radiation and extreme cold.
The moss was able to regenerate under normal growth conditions after spending up to five years at -80℃ and up to 30 days at -196℃. The team then created a set-up that had similar pressures, temperatures, gases and UV radiation to Mars. It found the moss survived in this Mars-like environment, and was able to regenerate under normal growth conditions, even after seven days of exposure.
“These experiments represent an important first step, but they do not show that the moss could be a significant source of oxygen under Martian conditions, nor do they show that the desert moss could reproduce in the Martian context,” McDaniel said. “Implying that moss is ready to terraform (行星地球化) Mars, or any other outer planet, is an overstatement.” Zupanska added.
Dr. Wiger of Wageningen University, also raised concerns, including that temperatures on the red planet rarely got above freezing, making outdoor plant growth impossible, while the new study did not use Mars-like soil. “The mosses were treated under Mars circumstances for a maximum of several days and then regrown under Earth conditions on sand,” he said. “This doesn’t show at all they can grow under Mars conditions.”
However, Prof. Edward Guinan of Villanova University described the study as impressive. “This extremotolerant moss could promise to be a pioneer plant for Mars colonization,” he said, although he noted the moss would need water to grow. “We have a lot of things to do,” he said. “But this lowly desert moss offers hope for making small portions of Mars habitable for humankind in the future.”
12. What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning the potatoes
A. The potatoes could feed Matt Damon.
B. The potatoes played a crucial role in the film.
C. The moss led to survival of the potatoes on Mars.
D. The moss might survive on Mars like these potatoes.
13. What can be implied from what McDaniel and Zupanska said
A. The moss has a long way to be a Martian plant.
B. They concluded that the earth species might grow on Mars.
C. They will research into producing the moss on other planets.
D. The experiments about the moss were completely insignificant.
14. What might be a characteristic of the moss from the text
A. Resistant to water. B. Adaptable to Martian soil.
C. Regenerative under Earth condition. D. Capable of producing oxygen on Mars.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Can a moss adapt to life on Mars
B. Can Mars actually become a second Earth
C. Can researchers make it to Mars colonization
D. Can a moss become a pioneer living on Mars
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. D

Money, a common topic in daily life, often raises a question: what is its real value Some people believe money is just a tool for buying material things, but this view is far from comprehensive. ____16____
Consider the stories of great minds in history. Madame Curie, for example, turned down a large sum of money that came with her Nobel Prize. Instead of using it for personal comfort, she invested all her funds in further scientific research. ____17____ This is because the discoveries she made later helped save millions of lives, a value no amount of immediate pleasure could match.
____18____ Think about a community park. Many people may wonder why the local government spends money building and maintaining it instead of using the funds elsewhere. But the park is more than just green space. It provides a place for children to play, for the elderly to exercise, and for neighbors to communicate. ____19____ In the long run, this kind of investment in public well-being brings far more value than short-term material gains.
However, it’s important to remember that the way we use money reflects our values. Some people chase after luxury goods, believing that owning them shows success. ____20____ Whether it’s a scientist devoting funds to research or an ordinary person donating to a community project, the key is to let money serve a purpose beyond immediate satisfaction. In this way, money truly realizes its greatest value.
A. Similar logic applies to our daily lives, even in small matters.
B. They think that the more expensive things they have, the more respected they will be.
C. On the contrary, money should be saved for emergencies rather than spent on public projects.
D. Her choice showed that money, when used for meaningful goals, can become a bridge to human progress.
E. Its true worth lies not in what it can buy immediately, but in how it can create possibilities for the future.
F. Every dollar spent on it strengthens the connection between people and improves the quality of community life.
G. Others, though, choose to spend money on things that have lasting impacts, like education, charity, or personal growth.
【答案】16. E 17. D 18. A 19. F 20. G

第二节 故事续写(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
The knock on the door brought me quickly from my kitchen. With three little ones down for a meal, I hurried to answer before they were all awakened premature.
Opening the door a crack revealed an old man dressed in dirty clothing. From his hand hung a torn plastic bag.
“Can I help you ” I asked.
“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables ” His voice was shaky with age.
“Are they from your garden ” Looking into his shabby bag, I saw mostly dirt, with a few carrots.
“Yes,” His voice was soft and rough. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those too ”
I wondered if he badly needed the bit of money he was asking for his produce. With a sigh, I gestured him in. “Please step inside and I’ll get my purse.”
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time Heidi, my generous little four-year-old, got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for tea ”
Without hesitating, the old man stepped inside and held out a basket with several apples resting at the bottom. “From my tree,” he said. “Thought you might like to make a pie.”
There was no mistaking the depressed look in his eye.
The three of us sat at the kitchen table, tasting cookies and sipping our tea, Heidi’s cup containing a much weaker version. Sheer delight in hosting a visitor was evident in her never- ending stream of questions. “What’s your name Where do you live Why are your clothes so dirty Will your mother be mad at you ”
The homeless- looking man chuckled (轻声笑) as he attempted to answer each question. His name was Mr Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years before, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for companionship had sent him door to door under the trick of selling fruit and vegetables.

【答案】范文
Eventually, the cookies were gone and he struggled to his feet. Inching his way to the door, he turned and offered us a cheerful smile and a wave goodbye. As I watched him limp painfully to an ancient bicycle leaning against our house, my heart melted. Once on his bike, he rode slowly down the road, perhaps a little less lonely than before. He had promised to return tomorrow, and I knew what I wanted to do.
The next day, the children excitedly awaited his visit. The moment I answered the door and let Mr Locket in, they rushed over and led him to the table. The center of the table was decorated with a small bunch of garden flowers picked by little hands. I entered the kitchen and came out with a steaming apple pie. Pulling up a chair beside my children, he immediately seemed at home. We watched with amazement a s he wolfed down half the dessert with his eyes filled with tears.
