Some people are working on the land, and I can hear their laughter. I tell myself that one day I’ll be back. But for now, it’s time to say goodbye. I’m leaving the eco-village where I’ve spent the past six years. My husband and I first arrived in Los Molinos, Spain, after a long stay in London. Our experience of eco-living was limited to regular recycling. In Spain, we had to learn how to live completely off-grid. All our electricity came from the solar panels, which meant we couldn’t have energy-hungry devices like toasters and electric kettles. We even had to give up the Internet because there was no connection. We harvested fruits and grew vegetables. In many ways it was paradise (天堂). The Sun shone most of the year. And I made friends with people I would never have met otherwise. And yet after six years, we knew it was time to leave. Our parents, back in England, were getting older and would need support. As a writer, I could work anywhere. Indeed, while in the eco-village, I finished a novel and two biographies. When we came back, the contrast between the clear, bright blue skies of Los Molinos and these seemingly ubiquitous (无处不在的) blanket of gray cloud that covered England was a shock. Almost immediately we missed the delicious Spanish dishes and the wild landscape with its vast empty spaces. The experience of eco-living was not wasted, however. I drew on those six years living in Spain for my new novel. It proved inspirational in other ways, too. While living in Los Molinos, we learned how to make cheap, nutritious dishes. We lived without central heating, and survived the freezing winter nights. As the cost of living in London continues to rise, I’ll be able to draw on these experiences. We were back with our cat and each time I look at him — occasionally addressing him in Spanish — I’m reminded of my time in that eco-paradise and the lessons it taught me.4. What does the underlined word “off-grid” mean in paragraph 2 A. Without daily necessities. B. Without outside contact.C. Without electrical devices. D. Without public power supply.5. Why did the author and her husband leave Los Molinos A. To publish her works. B. To apply for a job.C To care for their parents. D. To have a warm winter.6. What can be inferred about the author from paragraph 5 A. She was shocked to see the changes in England.B. She found it hard to live sustainably in England.C. She was likely to return to Spain with her parents.D. She had a strong attachment to her life in Spain.7. What did the author think of her experience of eco-living A. Tough. B. Valuable. C. Inconvenient. D. Peaceful.CScientists design robots to bring more automation into the tea industry茶园里来了智能采茶工,它的“手”够灵巧么 As the greenery returns, West Lake Longjing tea enters its prime harvesting period. And in one Hangzhou tea garden, huge mechanical arms have taken over the picking of tea leaf buds (芽).The arms belong to a smart tea-picking robot developed by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. After five years of research and development it has made its debut (首次亮相) this year. The robot’s creation was motivated by a severe labor shortage in manual tea picking, with Zhejiang province facing a deficit (缺少) of approximately 400,000 pickers. “Picking is the most crucial challenge for the growth of the whole tea industry,” said Professor Wu Chuanyu, leader of the research team.“The robot contains an intelligent recognition model that was developed through learning from a large database of tea bud images,” said Professor Chen Jianneng, Party branch secretary (党支部书记) of the team. This allows the robot to automatically identify tea buds with a success rate of about 90 percent. With a pull and a suck (吸), the robotic arm separates the buds from the branches and then puts them into a temporary storage box. Once all the buds in the target area have been collected, the picked buds will be transferred from the temporary storage box to the machine’s final collection box.Although it sounds easy, the harvesting process still faces challenges. According to Chen, factors such as variations in production areas’ terrain and weather conditions can hinder (妨碍) the machine’s recognition abilities. Moisture (水分) on tea leaves can cause the buds to stick to the walls of the tube (管) when being sucked into the temporary storage box, leading to blockages (堵塞). Additionally, the robot is currently limited to working on flat ground and slopes (斜坡) under 15 degrees, but many tea plants are cultivated (种植) on high mountains. These are problems that future models of tea-picking robots will have to overcome.“We believe that harvesting robots will be a major future trend,” said Wu. He added that in an optimistic scenario, about five years from now, machines will be available on the market to replace manual labor in the harvesting of West Lake Longjing tea in flat areas.8. What was the main reason for developing the tea-picking robot A. To speed up tea picking.B. To improve the quality of tea.C. To address a lack of workers.D. To reduce the cost of making tea.9. What can we learn from the text about the robot’s tea-picking process A. It operates on manual instructions.B. It processes the picked buds two at a time.C. It efficiently sorts tea buds by size.D. It recognizes the target buds with high accuracy.10. What is paragraph 5 mainly about A. The robot’s strengths over humans.B. Current limitations of the robot.C. Challenges facing tea cultivation.D. Potential risks posed by the robot.11. What is Wu’s attitude toward the future of harvesting robots A. Confident. B. Doubtful.C. Worried. D. Cautious.DGreenhouse gas emissions would rise if all farms in England and Wales went organic. Though the emissions of each farm would go down, much more food would have to be imported, as the amount they would produce would decrease greatly.“The key message from my perspective is that you can’t really have your cake and eat it,” says Laurence Smith, now at the Royal Agricultural University in the UK, who was part of the team that ran the numbers. Smith is a supporter of organic farming and says “there are a lot of advantages of the organic approach”, but his analysis shows that organic farming has downsides too.Farming and changes in land use, such as cutting down forests, are responsible for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. That means reducing farming emissions and the land needed for farming is required to limit further global warming.Smith and his co-workers found that emissions per unit of food are, on average, 20 per cent lower for organic crops and 4 per cent lower for organic animal products. However, organic harvests per hectare (公顷) are also lower on average. For wheat and barley, for instance, harvests are just half of those of traditional farms. This means 1.5 times as much land would be needed to grow the same amount of these foods. The estimated increase in emissions varies greatly, depending on where the extra farmland comes from. If only half comes from turning grassland into farms, the increase could be as low as 20 per cent. If grassland that would otherwise have been reforested is turned into farmland, emissions could nearly double. This doesn’t necessarily mean people should stop eating organic produce, says Smith. People might choose organic food for other reasons, such as to reduce their pesticide exposure (though contrary to popular belief, organic farmers do use pesticides) or for the sake of wildlife. Smith says the best choice may be to use some organic and traditional farming methods at the same time.12. Why may greenhouse gas emissions increase if a country goes organic A. Organic farms take longer to build.B. The agricultural output will increase greatly.C. The emissions of each farm unit will increase.D. Greater demand for imported food will be created.13. What does Smith mean by saying “you can’t really have your cake and eat it” in paragraph 2 A. Organic farming has both advantages and disadvantages.B. People can’t choose both organic and traditional farming.C. Organic farming can’t solve the problem of global warming.D. People should stop organic farming for environmental protection.14. What did Smith and his co-workers find A. Land was not used in a responsible way.B. Global warming could be brought under control.C. Organic farming needs more farmland to feed a country.D. Organic harvests per unit are greater than traditional harvests.15. What is Smith’s suggestion A. Stopping using pesticides. B. Eating less organic produce.C. Going back to traditional farming. D. Adopting mixed farming methods.第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。As is known, Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists of all time. Though he didn’t help much around the house, Ricky was still very pleased when his parents bought him the latest model of robot. As soon as it arrived, off it went, cooking, cleaning, ironing, and — most importantly — gathering up clothes from Ricky’s bedroom floor. On that first day, when Ricky went to sleep, he had left his bedroom in a truly disastrous state. When he woke up the next morning, everything was perfectly clean and tidy.In fact, it was actually “too” clean; now Ricky couldn’t find his favorite T-shirt, nor his favorite toy. However much he searched, the two things did not reappear. The same was starting to happen with other things. Ricky began to suspect the robot. He planned to spy on the robot, and began following it around the house. Finally he caught it red-handed, picking up one of Ricky’s toys to hide it.Ricky told his parents that the robot was broken and badly programmed and asked them to have it changed. But his parents told him absolutely not; they were delighted with the new robot, and it cooked like a dream. One day, the robot was whirring (嗡嗡地响) past, and heard the boy’s complaints. The robot returned with one of the boy’s toys, and some clothes for him. “Here, sir. I did not know it was bothering you” said the robot. “How could it not, you thief ! You’ve been stealing my belongings for weeks!” the boy answered angrily. “The objects were left on the floor. I therefore calculated that you did not like them. I am programmed to collect all that is not wanted, and at night I send it to people who can use it. I am a maximum efficiency (效率) machine. Were you unaware ” the robot said, with a certain pride.注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Ricky started feeling ashamed.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Since then, Ricky had decided to become a “maximum efficiency boy”.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 展开更多......
