Phew! I'm so glad the day is over. I'm really tired, but my first day at school went well.
First of all, we met outside the school building. I was very anxious because my primary school only had 300students but in the middle school there are about 1,300. What a difference! The older students are really big. I felt so small waiting there in front of the school.
The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names out to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs Black. She took us to our classroom. It's on the 5th floor.We aren't allowed to use the lift! I couldn't believe it.
We spent all morning with Mrs Black looking at our timetables. Everyone in the school had a different timetable. I'm worried that I' ll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room.
Lunchtime was OK. I had salad, fish and fruit, which were quite delicious and healthy, and then I went to play football with some of the other boys. They were all friendly and I don't think it will take me long to make friends.
After lunch we started lessons. I had maths and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece (希腊). That looked interesting. I have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived, so I'm going to do an Internet search and look it up in the library.
So far so good. I am quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I've got science. I hate science!

Unclear guidelines (准则) for when to keep a child at home if they are sick might play a part in the nationwide problem of students missing too much school.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an organization for doctors who treat children. It suggests that children stay at home when there are signs of sickness like fever, or when students are not well enough to attend classes. But many schools go far beyond that, offering different signs of sickness that would stop parents from sending their children to school.
Trenace has a five-year-old daughter who was sick a lot last year. The mother followed school guidelines and kept her daughter home when she had a cough, painful throat, or fever. Near the end of the year, school officials called her in to talk about why her daughter had missed so much school. “In the past, if the child didn't have a fever, then it's okay to send them to school,” said the mother. “But now it's like if they have a cough, you have to keep them home. Which is it ”
Children who missed school a lot found it more difficult to catch up. Missing 10 percent or more of the school year puts students at risk. Students who miss school also might miss meals, socializing with other students and teachers, physical exercise, and health care services.
Recently, the state of California decided to change their stay-at-home guideline for the autumn. The new guideline says children with low-level signs of sickness can come to school.
Noha Aboelata, who leads the Roots Health Centre in Oakland, California, said the change in guidance might make a big difference. She hoped that parents and schools will learn about the new guidance and that students will miss less school. “The most important place for our kids to be is school,” she said.

Using artificial intelligence (AI) to help us learn and improve those skills is not new—— some of the online language tools we turn to every day are powered by AI.
But as new technologies flood into the market, now is a great time to make use of the tech. And according to experts, these tools aren't replacing teachers — they're making their lives easier. One of the things that stops some of us from practising speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. AI can help—— chatbots (网上机器人) don't judge (评价) you. Of course, teachers don't either, but for some people, communicating with a bot may remove that fear of failure or shyness.
The latest chatbots use something called natural language processing that allows them to understand human speech or writing, providing a human-like response right away. While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working solely, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. The AI can also provide feedback (反馈) in seconds — gone are the days of waiting a week for work to be graded.
Past online language tools and games were able to tell you when you were wrong, but they weren't always able to explain why. Now, not only has that changed, but the explanations arc detailed and immediate. But this is not to underestimate (低估) the role of the teachers, who can use the technology to help learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of their students and personalize their teaching.

The competition went well, both because of the weather and the support of the community. I was able to interview a few of the surfers about the competition and they were happy to talk to me. Kenneth, who was the winner of last year’s competition, said that he was proud of his work this year even though he only got third place. The competition’s winner, Ryan, came all the way from America to compete. Ryan only spoke about how close the competition was. He thanked his friend and the second place winner, Jamie, for giving him a good challenge. All three surfers will return to compete for the national competition in June next year, and then again in December.
