We’ve lost direction and our brains are shrinking(缩小)—at least, our hippocampi are. These brain parts drive our spatial(空间的)awareness and orientation(方向). London taxi drivers, known for taking The Knowledge, a test that involves memorizing the central streets of the capital, have full-sized hippocampi. But in 2011, the drivers’ hippocampi were discovered to have shrunk significantly after retirement.
The development of the hippocampus can also be held back in childhood. Children living in urban environments rarely see the sun rise or set and cannot tell the difference between east and west. When I went into my local school to teach kids about direction, I found they struggled to distinguish north from south and east from west—though they could do so if allowed to use their phones.
Since 2005, when Google Maps was launched claiming it would help users get from A to B and then, three years later, when the iPhone 3G was released featuring “live” location, the online tech giants stated that today’s digital native kids would be the first generation who would not know what it meant to get lost.
But is that a good thing Their perspectives and orientation, like their hippocampi, are shrinking with the help of online providers. In four generations, children have gone from wandering up to six miles from home to an average of just 300 yards. The lack of outdoor activity has greatly affected children’s mental and physical health. It also encourages a fear of nature, leading to avoidance of the natural world and potentially resulting in indifference towards environmental conservation.
We are becoming, quite literally, disoriented in a digital world where we have given up on tools like paper maps and magnetic compasses.
However, it doesn’t have to be this way. After all, maps and compasses are cognitive tools, like the Internet, and we’ve been using them for thousands of years. But for our sense of well-being, and that of the world that sustains us, we can take steps not just to appreciate nature positively, but also to understand who we are by understanding where we are.
24. According to the text, what happened to London taxi drivers after they retired
A. Their hippocampi were found to have shrunk considerably.
B. They experienced a significant loss of their spatial memory.
C. They showed increased dependence on digital navigation tools.
D. They demonstrated improved navigation skills without pressure.
25. What change in children’s behavior is highlighted over four generations
A. Their ability to use smartphones has improved rapidly.
B. Their performance in school has declined significantly.
C. The distance they wander from home has dramatically decreased.
D. They have developed a greater interest in environmental conservation.
26. What is the main purpose of paragraph 4
A. To encourage children to spend more time on outdoor activities.
B. To show how children’s lives across four generations have changed.
C. To illustrate online providers have been affecting children negatively.
D. To explain how today’s digital native kids benefit from online providers.
27. What does the author recommend in the last paragraph
A. Focusing on the development of technology.
B. Appreciating nature and understanding our place in it.
C. Relying more on technology to connect with nature.
D. Combining digital and traditional tools for navigation.

Pride is often considered a negative force in human existence—the opposite of humility and a source of social conflicts. But is it According to psychologist Jessica Tracy, pride can have many boons. She argues that pride, like other human emotions, is part of our evolutionary heritage, helping us to survive and thrive in cooperative societies by inspiring us to be the best humans we can be.
Pride makes us feel good, and it’s an indication to ourselves that we are behaving in a way consistent with the values of our society. Tracy argues that those who regularly experience pride tend to be “outgoing, friendly, agreeable, calm and honest”, and “are generally communally oriented, meaning they place a high value on their relationships and friendships”. In this way, having pride makes people want to gain approval and respect from their communities.
But that doesn’t mean that pride is all for the good. It has a dark side, too, when it leads to hubris. Hubris is pride that has been falsely assumed without merit in order to drive away an inner sense of insecurity. If individuals exaggerate their importance, take credit for others’ achievements, bully others, or act aggressively toward anyone who questions them, it’s a sign that pride has turned to hubris. Moreover, people having hubris are more likely to be prejudiced and less likely to show empathy.
Can authentic pride lead to hubris It depends, says Tracy. If you feel authentic pride and it inspires you to do good by your community’s standards, great. But if you start feeling the need to live up to others’ expectations and earn their admiration by cheating, chances are you are leaning toward hubris.
To avoid pride slipping toward hubris, Tracy warns people not to lose their heads over the positive regard they receive for their accomplishments. “When we start to receive the gains—be they increased status, fame, or fortune—it becomes exceedingly easy to forget that these outcomes are indirect consequences of striving to be a good person,” says Tracy. “We should always remind ourselves that these accomplishments are not our primary goals.”
28. What does the underlined word “boons” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Benefits. B. Limitations. C. Forms. D. Controversies.
29. Why can pride help people develop good moral characters
A. Pride can encourage people to work harder.
B. Pride can make people value social recognition.
C. Pride can give people a sense of responsibility.
D. Pride can help people better control their emotions.
30. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3
A. To offer a solution to hubris.
B. To describe specific behavior of hubris.
C. To explain the motivation behind hubris.
D. To stress the terrible consequences of hubris.
31. Which of the following can make authentic pride turn into hubris
A. Trying to win other people’s admiration.
B. Lowering expectations for achievements.
C. Failing to receive the well-deserved rewards.
D. Regarding external rewards as the ultimate pursuit.

As a result of enormous recent technological advances, we are now living in what’s known as the fourth industrial revolution, a period of digital transformation that’s affecting the way we live and greatly disrupting(扰乱)the business sector.
Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IOT), artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing are becoming the standard across most modern organizations and influencing everything from manufacturing to communications and job roles. One area where these changes are common is the marketing industry.
The first areas impacted by AI were based on fundamental or repetitive tasks, such as data reporting. As AI evolved, so did its ability to tackle complex challenges, especially those within the fields of creativity, predictive analysis and behavior recognition. AI has helped to automate many functions within marketing, freeing up valuable time and resources for creativity and strategy.
Automated content and image creation are now becoming the mainstream in marketing, social media, email and advertising campaigns. Websites and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) are also benefiting from AI insights to help determine what content and search terms resonate(产生共鸣)best with potential buyers.
While it is clear AI provides enormous benefits for marketers, it is also clear that its higher end capabilities remain quite limited. AI is based on machine learning and relies on historical data in its decision-making. It is highly intelligent at making rapidly informed decisions. But it lacks compassion and cannot understand customers’ feelings and emotions.
Google, which ranks websites in search engines based on their helpfulness to users, will eventually present AI-written content and then demand the content be more unique, informative and personable to be ranked highly. Additionally, it is worth considering that sudden changes such as the disruption from COVID-19 could not have been predicted by AI and required the creative and objective decision-making of humans to navigate.
AI has streamlined(精简)working practices, created new job opportunities and enhanced job capabilities. It is unlikely to replace roles but complement(补充)and evolve them. As technology advances, so must the skills and capabilities of marketers to meet this evolving landscape.
32. How does AI help SEO
A. AI increases the diversity of social media.
B. AI enriches the content of fundamental tasks.
C. AI enhances the creativity of advertising campaigns.
D. AI increases the chance of finding target customers.
33. What does the underlined word “compassion” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Responsibility. B. Flexibility. C. Empathy. D. Caution.
34. What does the author think of the development of AI
A. It will replace marketers in creative jobs.
B. It will be more prepared for emergencies.
C. It will standardize the automated content.
D. It will place higher demands on marketers.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The impacts of AI on marketing roles
B. The advancement of artificial intelligence
C. Great search engines start to expand their business
D. The fourth industrial revolution changes the global market
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had broken up, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. 36
Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. 37 I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy-tale resolution. I had no idea then how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality.
38 Simply because failure meant getting rid of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was. 39 Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena(舞台)I believed I truly belonged. I was set free because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I loved, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. 40 The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive.
A. But how did I deal with failure
B. I discovered that I had a strong will.
C. That period of my life was a dark one.
D. So why do I talk about the benefits of failure
E. By every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.
F. I realized that the fear of failure can hold me back from success.
G. Instead, I began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Andy was frightened when he saw the pirates(海盗). They had sharp swords and wore grim(严肃的)expressions. But the pirates were not the reason why Andy felt anxious. The pirates were supposed to be there because Andy was starring in the school play. He was excited when Mrs. Roberts, his teacher, chose him to star in Treasure Island. The play was based on a famous story, and it was one of Andy’s favorites. He had been looking forward to it for weeks. The play was staged in the performance hall, which can seat over 1,000 people. But on the stage, with his family and friends seated in the front row of the audience, something terrible happened. The lines escaped him at the moment.
It was the big scene at the end of the play when Andy fought the pirates. When they were practicing the play, this was his favorite scene, as it allowed him to run and fight with his sword.Andy preferred fighting against the pirates, which made him feel like a hero. He and his friends imagined their school gym as a ship and spent their free time practicing fighting there every day. They ran back and forth across it, having sword fights and shouting about hidden treasure.
But now, before the fight really happened, Andy was too nervous to remember what he should say to Long John Silver, the leader of the pirates. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t
remember his lines.
Was he supposed to say, “This is the end for you!” or “Get your hands off my treasure!” Maybe he was supposed to say, “Prepare for battle!” The words, borrowed from pirate movies, carried the meaning of readiness for a fight. But Andy didn’t want to just make up the words. If he said something wrong, he might confuse the other actors. All of them might get in trouble.
