In recent years, more and more elderly people in China have been building lasting friendships, which bring them joy and support in their later lives.
Ms. Wang, 72 years old, lives in Beijing. She made friends with three other women—Ms. Li, Ms. Zhang, and Ms. Zhao—at a community garden five years ago. Every morning, they meet at the garden to do tai chi (太极) together. After that, they sit on a bench and chat about their daily lives—their children, their grandchildren, or interesting things they saw on TV. “Before I met them, I felt very lonely,” Ms. Wang said. “My children work in other cities, so I live alone. But now, I look forward to every morning because I know I will see my friends.”
These four friends also help each other in many ways. Last year, Ms. Li fell and hurt her leg. Ms. Wang, Ms. Zhang, and Ms. Zhao took turns visiting her and bringing her meals. They also helped her clean her house and take care of her plants. “They are like my family,” Ms. Li said. “I don’t know what I would have done without them.”
Another group of elderly friends in Shanghai has a different way of staying connected. They formed a “book club” three years ago. Every Saturday afternoon, they meet at a community center to read and discuss books. Most of the books they read are about Chinese history or traditional culture. “Reading together helps us learn new things, and discussing the books brings us closer,” said Mr. Chen, 78 years old. “We also share our own stories and experiences while talking about the books. It’s very interesting.”
These friendships are not just fun—they also have many health benefits. Studies show that elderly people with strong friendships are less likely to feel lonely or depressed (抑郁的). They also have better physical health, because they are more active and take better care of themselves when they have friends to support them.
Many communities in China are now encouraging elderly people to make friends. They organize activities like tai chi classes, book clubs, and craft (手工) workshops. These activities give elderly people a chance to meet others and build new friendships. “We want to help elderly people live happy and healthy lives,” said a community worker in Guangzhou. “Friendship is an important part of that.”
1.Where did Ms. Wang meet her three friends
2.When was the “book club” in Shanghai formed
3.Why do Mr. Chen and his friends read and discuss books at the community center
4.How can the elderly get more friends
5.What benefits do elderly people get from having strong friendships

In the past, connecting (与……有联系) with friends meant spending time with them in person (亲自). But now it is different.
Know More:In the past, people connected with friends in simple ways. ●meet friends face-to-face. ●go to their friends’ homes to play or chat. ●meet at places like parks or small shops. ●talk and have a good time together.
With the development (发展) of technology, people’s lives have changed a lot. Today, more young people like to connect with their friends online better. They think it is a good way to connect with their friends. However, some people think that connecting with friends online may make them lose their real-world friendships (友谊). Do you agree with it Here are some ideas.
Agree Disagree
Technology hurts (伤害) friendships. When I communicate with a friend online, it’s not easy to understand what he or she really means and feels. We might think our friends are happy while they’re upset and angry. A friend might send a text message as a joke. But our feelings might be bad because we think he’s serious. Hi, I’m Jack. In fact, technology doesn’t hurt friendships at all. Instead, it can make them stronger. For example, my best friends live in California where I used to live. The last time I met them in person was three years ago. But I talk to them online every weekend. It feels like they’re right here with me. Without technology, we can’t be so close friends.
According to experts (专家), connecting with friends online is not enough to build true friendships. Spending time together face-to-face is quite important, especially when people are in trouble. During hard times, people don’t need someone who likes their pictures or posts on social media. What they really need is someone who can offer them help.
6.How did people connect with their friends in the past (One way is OK.)
7.Why do some people think that technology hurts friendships
8.When does Jack talk with his friends online
9.What is important to build true friendships according to experts
10.Do you want to connect with your friends online or in person And how can you help your friends in trouble

There is almost no rain or snow in a desert the whole year. The temperature is usually high in the day and low at night. There are few living things there. Which is the hottest desert The answer is Antarctica (南极洲)! Isn’t it interesting In fact, there are two main types of deserts: hot deserts and cold deserts. Although Antarctica is the coldest one, it seldom snows because there’s not so much moisture (水汽) in the air. The hottest and driest desert is the Sahara Desert, which is mostly made of sand. Some plants, such as Agave, cactus and yucca, can grow there even in this waterless condition. All of them have special skills that help them keep alive in such a hard environment. They have thick stems (茎) to store water and widespread roots to take in it. Some of them have thorns (刺) instead of leaves. In this way, they will lose less water in hot air. There are animals living in the desert as well. Camels are able to drink up to 100 kg of water at one time. They seldom sweat. It helps them to keep water in their bodies. And if they are thirsty, they may turn the fat in their humps into water. Other animals, such as spiny-tailed lizards, do not need much water. They usually stay in a hole on hot days and come out for food at cool nights. When it rains, they come out to drink with their skin, not with their mouths!

Schools around the world are different, but they all have an important job: educating children. Let’s look at schools in China, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.
In China’s big cities, schools are usually large and modern. There are smart boards, and students can learn with new technology (科技). Big libraries are full of books to help students gain more knowledge. In Bangladesh, there are many special boat schools because the heavy rainfall causes the country to have more water than many other places in the world. When the rainy season comes, students need to have classes in the boat schools. In the Philippines, some schools use plastic bottles in a clever way. They build classrooms out of bottles, making classrooms more airy (通风的) and bright. It’s a great way to protect the environment.

I am a Canadian girl. I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But all my experiences with the language were in the classroom. When I was 17, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I headed for Quebec to live with a French-speaking host family, who didn’t speak any English. And I would learn French at a local school.
On the first day of school, the local school gave us students a test to determine (测定) our language level. We needed to only speak French all summer.
I made every effort to communicate in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French. Though I couldn’t understand most of it at the very beginning, the experience was exciting and refreshing.
On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most wonderful part of our trip was a visit to Old Quebec. I walked along the stone street, took pictures of the European-style buildings, and learned some stories there.
At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate pretty well. I couldn’t wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being lost in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement in French.

There are two common (常见的) reading ways: silent reading (默读) and reading aloud. Personally, I really like reading aloud because it lets others hear clearly.
Reading aloud can bring some good things to us. According to a study, reading aloud can help us remember 10% more than silent reading. Someone may ask: If there are so many benefits (益处), why do we still need to read silently That is because when people read and write at the same time, silent reading can better help us keep up with the speed of our thinking. Reading aloud makes reading slower because it takes time to pronounce the words.
Both silent reading and reading aloud have their own good points and bad points. We can choose the suitable reading way according to our different needs and situations.

I still remember when I was in Grade 8, my physics was very poor. I had a really hard time with it. Once in class, the teacher asked us to discuss questions with each other. Because I was very shy (腼腆的), I could not do it like what he told me. My physics teacher encouraged me to face others and talk with someone else. Then I studied with some classmates together. When I did not understand any questions, they could give me some suggestions and I could quickly find out the ways to deal with the problems. After that I felt very relaxed and asked my classmates a lot of questions about physics. Finally, I finished my homework by myself for the first time. How excited I was!

Most children have wonderful toys to play with. Usually, their parents buy these toys for them, often as Christmas or birthday gifts. Some children buy small toys with their pocket money But instead of buying toys, one fun way to get new toys is to make them.
The easiest toy to make is a kite. For a kite, all you need is a large piece of paper, two sticks, some pieces of string and some glue. Take the two sticks and use the string to fix them together in the centre. Then take a string and tie it to the ends of the sticks to make a string square (正方形). Cut the paper to make it the same size as the square. Finally, stick the paper to the string square with glue. Now your kite is finished. All you need to do is to tie a long string to the kite so you can fly it. In many countries, there are kite competitions. Hundreds of people come together to show off their kites. In one famous competition, some of the kites are more than three metres tall. They need many strong men to fly them and people use rope instead of string.

Do-it-yourself projects let you design your house, providing a way to save money, but even with step-by-step instructions, DIY doesn’t always go as planned. Nearly 80% of homeowners make mistakes while doing DIY. Here are four of the biggest mistakes that homeowners often make.
Costing Too Much
More than 40% of people find DIY projects more difficult and expensive than they thought. By taking on a task that needs more time or skills than you have, you may end up with a big mess and an unfinished project. “It’s important to think about why you want to do DIY and what you’re hoping to get from it,” said Bailey Carson, a home care expert. “If you’re doing it just to save money, you might need to think twice. Without the time, tools, and talent to do it correctly and safely, mistakes may cost you more in the long run (从长远来看) than simply (简单地) paying others to help from the beginning.”
Using the Wrong Tools
A third of people used the wrong tool for DIY projects, which can make the job more difficult and less safe. Many tools are designed for special uses and materials, so if you use them for other tasks, you may get hurt. Always use the proper tools for each project, and make sure you know how to use them.
Not Safety First
DIY mistakes can not only be costly but also dangerous. Of the survey people who once made a big mistake during their DIY projects, 47% said that the mistake led to (导致) serious problems, while 44% started a fire or fell off (从……摔下来) a roof or ladder. Take your time and follow all safety rules when using tools. Remember to wear dust masks, safety glasses, hearing protection or gloves to protect yourself.
Skipping Important Steps
Skipping (跳过) a key step can end up your whole DIY project—and you might not realize it until much later. In the survey, 47% of people said that they had finished a DIY project before realizing it was done wrong. Read all instructions carefully ahead of time, and make sure you have the necessary skills to complete each step before you begin.
1—2题 Understand the Content (基础理解);3题Analyze Reasons (原因分析);4题Give Advice (给出建议)。
92.What can DIY projects help homeowners do
A.Only save money. B.Design their houses and save money. C.Never make mistakes.
93.List TWO biggest mistakes homeowners often make in DIY:
a.
b.
94.Complete the chart about why DIY projects may go wrong:
Mistake Type Reason
Costing Too Much Taking on tasks needing more time/skills than having
95.Suppose you want to help a friend avoid DIY mistakes. Write a short tip (within 30 words) using information from the text:
DIY is very popular in China now. Yang Chen works for a computer business in Beijing. Though he enjoys his work, it is hard for him to relax (放松) after work.
“For a long time, I had no choice (选择) except going to a bar for a drink and karaoke to relax myself,” he said.
One day when he saw many toy dogs in a toy shop, he had an idea. “Why not do some kinds of things and relax myself ” Then he began to make model planes, model ships and something else. The things that he had made by himself didn’t look as professionally (专业地) made as those in the shops, but he liked doing it. “It is not as much fun to play with things which are bought expensively from the shops,” he said. Now his bookshelves are full of many kinds of things he has made. They are very beautiful, and his family and friends like them very much.
More and more young people are like Yang, making or creating (创造) things on their own. They like to do them themselves.
Though making things with our own hands may take much time, some people, now known as DIYers—do-it-yourselfers, enjoy doing them very much. They can make all kinds of things they like. DIY is becoming more and more popular in China. It may be new to the young, yet many people remember when it was a way of life.
During the 1960s and 1970s, when there were not enough living things for people to live on, they had to use their own hands to do many things.
