Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when you are going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it: I know Idid. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening (令人恐惧的). But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’ re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
11. What can we infer from Sharon about high school
A. Teachers are quite strict. B. Students often stay up at night.
C. Teachers provide little care for students. D. Students should make good use of their time.
12. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school
A. Excited. B. Bored. C. Worried. D. Relaxed.
13. Who mentions the importance of friends
A. Frank. B. David. C. Sharon. D. Eddie.

I woke up this morning, excited but anxious, as today was the day I would begin my journey of senior high school.
The school I attended is an all-female boarding school, which is the only single-sex school in this city. Some people say single-sex schools are better than mixed-sex ones in that they have classes specially designed for their male or female students. I am curious to know what such a school looks like. Thousands of thoughts flashed through my mind. Will I fit in Will I make friends Will I have nice teachers What if I make a bad impression on the other girls What if I can’t concentrate in class as I did in junior high
After breakfast, I set off with Mum sitting beside me and Dad driving the car. We were warmly received by a group of seniors at the school gate. I said goodbye to Mum and Dad there. Some of the seniors helped take my suitcase (手提箱) to the dorm (宿舍), where I met my three roommates, Sally, Laura and Amanda. Only two of us have Chinese nationality while Sally is Korean and Laura American, who impressed me most with her beautiful eyes and sweet smiles.
Since we had no classes in the morning, the four of us decided to explore our campus. Our school is beautiful with tall trees, bright flowers, nice-looking grassland and buildings of the southern Chinese style. A bulletin board (宣传栏) we passed by shows a lot of activity photos and says “With more than 50 student organisations on campus, there is a community for every interest.” I took a photo of the name list of the organisations so that I could study them carefully this weekend before I choose to register with some. I am looking forward to improving myself through group activities.
14. What is special about the school the author attends
A. It is the best school in the city. B. It is better than mixed-sex schools.
C. It has classes only for male students. D. It has only female students.
15. How did the author come to school
A. All by herself. B. With her three roommates.
C. With her parents keeping her company. D. With some seniors carrying her suitcase.
16. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Their exploration of the campus. B. The landscape of the school.
C. A bulletin board. D. Student organisations.
17. The paragraph following the text might talk about ________.
A. what activities would be held B. what happened that afternoon
C. how to get along with roommates D. how to study in senior high school

I really place many people into two categories when it comes to shopping. The first is people who simply love doing window shopping and do it quite regularly maybe because they are really good at spotting bargains. The other category, which I suppose is obvious that people who simply dislike shopping for anything. They find it very boring, and frustrating and do not particularly like going to their local shopping malls for anything. They will probably do anything to try and get away with shopping for gifts and I had the same problem until I discovered something.
The simple discovery was to shop online for everything. This is especially fantastic when you are shopping online for gifts because there are so many websites out there dedicated to (致力于) supplying all kinds of gifts for every occasion you can think of. The greatest thing is that you can do this from the comfort of your own home without having to leave and sit at a computer with a nice mug of coffee to help. Researching is always important because you need to make sure whoever you are going to purchase this before is going to like it. You need to make sure of your researched pricing to ensure that you are getting good value for money. Generally, online you will always find things cheaper than buying something in a store in your local shopping mall. The fact that the website does not have many overheads with staffing and rent (租赁) gives them the opportunity to sell products at a reduced price.
It’s also important that you make sure the website you purchase things from has a good reputation. Check their customer service and also read any feedback that they may have from customers who have already made a purchase.
18. Why do some people like doing window shopping better
A. Maybe because they have more time to kill.
B. Maybe because they like the bargaining occasions.
C. Maybe because they like to appear in crowded places.
D. Maybe because they don’t know how to do online shopping.
19. The best factor for the author to shop online should be ________.
A. he has much more space to bargain with sellers B. he has the bravery to follow the fashions at present
C. he can surf to find so many choices just at home D. he needn’t drive a car or take buses to find stores
20. Why are the things online cheaper according to the author
A. The shop owners introduce goods with bad quality.
B. The shop owners needn’t employ many workers.
C. The shop owners spend more on rent than that at a physical store.
D. The shop owners have less opportunity to sell products at a reduced price.
21. To ensure you buy things from a standard shop you can ________.
A. surf earlier customers’ comments on the website
B. call the earlier buyer for information
C. surf to find the personal information of the shop owner
D. turn to the police for advice on the information of the shop owner
D
A sleepover (不在家过夜) program, which is designed to make kids believe that their favorite toys enjoy reading, can help encourage children to pick up more books, a new study suggests.
Toys sleepover programs are designed to get children interested in books. Children take their toys to a library for the night. At this point, workers and volunteers take photos of the toys which explore the library and read books. The next day, the children collect their toys and the photos of what the toys did during the night. They are given the books their toys chose to read.
It was found that before the sleepover the children did not spend time looking at the books in their play area at preschool. Immediately after the sleepover, the number of children who read to the toys was higher than the number who did not, but after three days the effect decreased gradually.
The researchers also tested a method for sustaining the effect. They reminded the children of the sleepover a month later, by hiding the toys and showing them the photos again the next day. This simple method brought an increase in the number of children reading to their toys.
The study proves for the first time that children who take part in sleepover programs read picture books to their toys more. “We wanted to know if there really was an effect, and if so, how long it lasts. Surprisingly, not only did the children show interest in the books, but they also began to read to their toys. This means that a new behavior pattern appeared that the children hadn’t had before. We did not expect anything like this,” said one of the researchers.
Reading is important for the development of children’s language skills and imagination. When parents read to their children, it is a passive way of reading for the child. However, when children read to their toys, it is a more active, self-directed way of reading, helping them develop into more active readers, researchers said.
22. What is the purpose of the sleepover program
A. To develop children’s language skills. B. To help children to sleep well.
C. To encourage children to read more. D. To guide children to form a good sleeping habit.
23. What do children do in the sleepover program
A. Go around the library with their toys. B. Sleep with their toys.
C. Read together with their toys. D. Take their toys to the library.
24. The underlined word “sustaining” in paragraph 4 can be replaced by ________.
A. keeping B. testing C. surveying D. showing
25. What made the researchers surprised after the study of the sleepover program
A. Children showed no interest in the books.
B. The effect of the sleepover program could last long.
C. Children began to read to their toys on their own.
D. Whether the sleepover program had an effect remained unknown.
