I felt a buzz (振动) in my pocket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started off: “Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…” and my vision blurred (模糊). The position—measuring soil quality in the Sahara Desert as part of an undergraduate research programme — had felt like the answer I had spent years looking for.I had put so much time and emotional energy into applying, and I thought the rejection meant the end of the road for my science career. So I was shocked when, not long after the email, Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shocked—and overjoyed—when she invited me to talk with her about potential projects I could pursue in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all.I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue. When I applied to graduate school, I found three programmes promising to allow me to follow my desired research direction. And I applied with the same anxious excitement as before. When I was rejected from one that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undoubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) to keep it from sending me into panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted into one of the other programmes I was also excited about.Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them.4. How did the author feel upon seeing the email sender’s name A. Anxious. B. Angry. C. Surprised. D. Settled.5. After talking with Professor Devon, the author decided to ________.A. criticise the review process B. stay longer in the Sahara DesertC. apply to the original project again D. put his heart and soul into the lab work6. According to the author, the project with the robotics professor was ________.A. demanding B. inspiring C. misleading D. amusing7. What can we learn from this passage A. An invitation is a reputation. B. An innovation is a resolution.C. A rejection can be a redirection. D. A reflection can be a restriction.【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all. 根据第四段“I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue. 根据最后一段“Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them. CScientists from Japan and Taiwan may have solved an old mystery: how did ancient people with simple tools and little scientific knowledge make long, dangerous ocean trips to new places To test their ideas, the researchers made a trip of their own in a canoe they built from a tree using stone tools. The first humans began appearing in Japan around 30,000-35,000 years ago. Some may have arrived using land bridges that existed at the time. But scientists believe that others arrived by boat. It’s likely that ancient people crossed the sea from Taiwan to reach Japan’s Ryukyu islands. But it wasn’t clear what kinds of boats might have allowed ancient people to complete such a dangerous sea voyage. There are 70 miles (110 kilometers) of open ocean between Taiwan and Yonaguni, the nearest of the Ryukyu islands. To make things more difficult, the route crosses the Kuroshio current, which is one of the world’s strongest ocean currents.Yousuke Kaifu is a scientist at the University of Tokyo. He has long wondered what kinds of boats ancient people could have used to make the trip. The people would have had no maps, no metal tools, and only the boats they could make by hand.Dr. Kaifu and his team began by exploring reed boats. Since reeds float, the researchers used large bundles of reeds, strapped together with vines, to make boats. But a 2016 test showed that the boats were too slow to handle the strong Kuroshio current. The same was true of the bamboo boats the team tried in 2017 and 2018. Finally, the team decided to investigate a “dugout canoe”, made from a hollowed-out tree. Again, they tried to do everything using only the tools available roughly 30,000 years ago. They made stone axes and used them to cut down a cedar tree that was three feet (91 centimeters) across. Then, still using stone tools, they hollowed out the log. Their efforts turned the log into a 25-foot (7.5-meter) canoe. In July of 2019, four men and one woman set out from Wushibi, Taiwan in the canoe. Their goal, Yonaguni, was 140 miles (225 kilometers) away. And to get there, they’d have to make it across the Kuroshio current. To guide them, the boat’s crew could only use things that they could see, like the stars and the sun. The trip was exhausting. But after 45 hours — nearly two days — of paddling, they arrived at Yonaguni.Dr. Kaifu says, “We now know that these canoes are fast and durable [tough] enough to make the crossing.” But he adds that the success of such a crossing in the past would have depended greatly on the skill of the crew. “Those male and female pioneers must have all been experienced paddlers,” he said. The researchers’ report points out that in spite of their very basic tools, the ancient sailors managed to do something that was “extraordinary”.8. Why didn’t the bamboo boats make the trip from Wushibi to Yonaguni A. Because the boats were too weak to handle the strong Kuroshio current.B. Because the boats were too slow to deal with the strong Kuroshio current.C. Because the boats were difficult to control in the strong Kuroshio current.D. Because the boats were not strong enough to make the long trip.9. What made the trip from Wushibi to Yonaguni a success A. Stars and the sun. B. Skill of the crew.C. The bamboo boats. D. The reed boats.10. What does the underlined word “paddlers”mean in the last paragraph A. pioneers. B. researchers.C. ancient people. D. Canoeists.11. What is the main idea of the passage A. How did the ancient people arrive in Japan B. How to build the canoe in ancient times C. How did ancient people make long ocean trips D. How to guide them in the ocean trips 【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第四段中“But a 2016 test showed that the boats were too slow to handle the strong Kuroshio current. The same was true of the bamboo boats the team tried in 2017 and 2018. 根据最后一段中“But he adds that the success of such a crossing in the past would have depended greatly on the skill of the crew. “Those male and female pioneers must have all been experienced paddlers,” he said. 根据最后一段中“But he adds that the success of such a crossing in the past would have depended greatly on the skill of the crew. “Those male and female pioneers must have all been experienced paddlers,” he said. 根据第一段“Scientists from Japan and Taiwan may have solved an old mystery: how did ancient people with simple tools and little scientific knowledge make long, dangerous ocean trips to new places (日本和台湾的科学家或许解开了一个古老谜团:古人仅靠简单工具和有限科学知识,是如何完成漫长且危险的远洋航行抵达新地方的?)” DChina has made remarkable achievements in space exploration. The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) aims to land its astronauts on the moon before 2030 and has recently shown the spacesuit they plan to use. However, the name of the suit is still up in the air.As reported by Space News, the CMSA revealed their new extravehicular (舱外的) activity (EVA) spacesuit at an event on September 28 in Chongqing, China. The suit was modeled by Wang Yaping, China’s second woman in space, and Zhai Zhigang, another astronaut. The presentation mainly focused on the suit’s outer features. In particular, the new suit is slimmer and lighter than the CMSA’s earlier Feitian EVA suit used for low Earth orbit. It is covered in a protective fabric to guard against extreme temperatures and lunar dust. The suits also have a wide-ranging, non-reflective shield (防护)and both short and long focus length cameras. Unlike the earlier suits, these lunar suits allow for much more flexibility while moving on the moon.Apart from the practicalities, representatives explained that aesthetics (美学) were also important during the design phase. The appearance of the new spacesuit was emphasized. According to CNN, the mainly white spacesuits have red stripes on their upper parts inspired by the “flying apsaras” from ancient Chinese art. “The stripes on the legs are designed to look like ‘rocket launch flames,’ representing a strong-willed and determined spirit, and that’s the key.” as Zhang Wanxin, director of the CMSA’s engineering office, told China’s CCTV. This weekend’s announcement also saw the CMSA officials task the nation with helping name the new suits, which will be chosen later. This not only shows China’s remarkable achievements in space exploration but also reflects its cultural pride and rapid advances in science and technology. By integrating traditional Chinese cultural elements into modern technology, China showcases its unique charm and great power to the world. Meanwhile, the public naming initiative encourages citizens to engage with the space program, creating a closer link between the space and the people.12. What is one advantage of the new spacesuit A. It is more user-friendly.B. It is more cost-effective.C It is more pressure-resistant.D. It is more water-proof.13. Why is the appearance emphasized in the new design A. To follow the international trend.B. To adjust the lunar environment.C. To highlight Chinese cultural elements.D. To downplay the aesthetic value.14. What is the last paragraph mainly about A. The technical descriptions of the new spacesuits.B. The cultural pride behind China’s space exploration.C. The future prospect of the China Manned Space Agency.D. The international development in space technology.15. What is the writing purpose of the text A. To report China’s exploration progress.B. To introduce the manufacturing process of new spacesuit.C. According to the Oxford dictionary, belonging is defined as a “deep sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identification within a group, place, or context.” ____16____Since the beginning of human evolution, people have connected with others in order to survive. This desire to form and grow relationships is rooted in the human brain. ____17____ In 1943, Abraham Maslow was the first psychologist to write about belonging as a human need. His theory, the Hierarchy (等级) of Needs, states that humans must acquire their basic needs, such as physiological (生理上的) needs and needs related to safety, before they can begin fulfilling other higher, more complex needs, like belonging or developing self-esteem.Another groundbreaking research about belonging emerged in 1995. Mark Leary and Roy Baumeister found that humans have a universal drive to belong, which motivates their thoughts and actions. In fact, this drive is so important that they argued it was a fundamental human need-not a secondary need in a hierarchy. Their later research explored the connection between self-esteem and belonging. According to their research, self-esteem is not just about how people feel about themselves internally. ____18____Although feeling connected to people is important in many settings, it becomes especially critical in schools. A 2020 research analysis found that students who do not feel a sense of belonging at school are often searching for threats in their environment that signal whether they are welcome or not. ____19____ This, in turn, can cause poorer academic performance. It can also discourage students from forming deeper relationships. So, a student’s feeling of belonging is vital for their learning.____20____ Researchers will continue to analyze how personality, culture, and even social media shape how connected we feel to others. With this knowledge, people can create schools and communities where more people feel included. That way, we can develop a society that is overall healthier, happier, and more connected.A. They may do things to increase their self-esteem.B. This stress can use up cognitive resources needed for learning.C. Belonging is a complex thing because it is influenced by many factors.D. Over the years, researchers have been exploring this subjective feeling.E. Feeling like you belong can actually improve many aspects of your life.F. It actually serves as a warning signal that measures how much people feel accepted.G. When you see yourself well suited to a specific environment, you feel valued and respected.【答案】16. G 17. D 18. When he set off for home, Margarito’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son's safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival. With his mother's words in mind, Margrito approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Margarito began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a bumpy mountain road that had been flooded by a creek(小溪).Margarito, driving a four-wheel truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn't realize that such a thought would be a big mistake. It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Margarito’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver's side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Margarito was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.On the road right behind Margarito were a delivery worker named Steve and his nephew Mike, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Margarito's truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Steve quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck. Next, Steve turned to Mike and yelled," Give me a rock!”___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Margarito was about to thank Steve and Mike when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】范文Next, he turned to Mike and yelled, “Give me a rock!” With the rock in hand, he hit the window over and over , but in vain. He didn’t give up easily; instead, he balanced himself, leaned back and threw the rock at the window again with all his strength. Fortunately, this time he made it — the glass broke. To his relief, it didn’t hurt Margarito, who reached out for Steve’s hand and was rescued. Without delay, the two men escaped and returned to safety.Margarito was about to thank Steve and Mike when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang. With trembling hands, Margarito took out the phone and answered it. “Are you home yet Everything’s good ” His mother’s anxious voice came over. Tears welled up in his eyes on hearing the familiar voice of concern. Margarito choked up as he explained what had happened. Hanging up the phone, he thanked Steve and Mike sincerely. After talking with Professor Devon, the author decided to ________.A criticise the review process B. stay longer in the Sahara DesertC. apply to the original project again D. put his heart and soul into the lab work6. According to the author, the project with the robotics professor was ________.A. demanding B. inspiring C. misleading D. amusing7. What can we learn from this passage A. An invitation is a reputation. B. An innovation is a resolution.C. A rejection can be a redirection. D. A reflection can be a restriction.CScientists from Japan and Taiwan may have solved an old mystery: how did ancient people with simple tools and little scientific knowledge make long, dangerous ocean trips to new places To test their ideas, the researchers made a trip of their own in a canoe they built from a tree using stone tools. It is more cost-effective.C. It is more pressure-resistant.D. To involve more people in the public naming initiative.D. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.注意:1.所续词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Next, Steve turned to Mike and yelled," Give me a rock!”___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Margarito was about to thank Steve and Mike when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 展开更多......
