Still in shock I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases. Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can. ” Cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know. ” But I didn’t know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes. ” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼) . Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to wash the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn’t help crying. Early the next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do. . .” Instead, I try to think of one specific task that suits that man’s need, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel (狗屋;养狗场) or house-sitting during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed that one ” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes. ”

Fan Jinshi, 86, a famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) , was awarded by UNESCO for her contribution (贡献) to the protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
Called “the daughter of Dunhuang”, her story with the caves started 61 years ago. In 1963, Fan, a Peking University graduate, had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves.
“Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was breathtaking. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth, " Fan told Gansu Daily.
Back in those days, the Mogao Caves were almost completely cut off from the world. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the Caves to copy murals (壁画) and do whatever they could to protect and restore them. In 2011, after 40 years of hard work, a report on 10 Mogao Caves by Fan’s team was finally published. It was known as China’s first professional report on cave archaeology.
As time passed, Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves, causing the murals inside to fade. Something needed to be done to preserve Dunhuang’s heritage.
In the late 1980s, Fan stumbled upon computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years of exploration. the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database to protect cultural relics (文物) there, allowing Dunhuang’s art to live forever and to step out of the caves to meet the world. 2
“In my whole life, I’ve only done one thing: protect and promote the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves, ” she told People’s Dally. “My heart belongs to Dunhuang. ”

If you are looking for a creative solution to a piece of work or a school assignment, don’t lock yourself up in a quiet room.
A new study shows that moaerate background noise is a better motivation to creative thinking than the sound of silence, a well-known magazine reported.
A paper published in the Journal of Consumer Research says that the perfect working environment should buzz (嗡嗡作响) with a little noise.
Researchers found that test subjects were at their most creative state when background noise was measured at 70 decibels, the level one might find in a busy coffee shop.
A nearly silent environment (50 decibels) was too quiet. Turning up the volume to85 decibels (a jackhammer tearing up the pavement outside your building) had an opposite effect—the noise became a distraction (分散注意力) .
The researchers asked 65 students at the University of British Columbia, Canada, to perform various creative tasks while noises recorded at a roadside restaurant were played in the background.
In one experiment, scientists asked participants to brainstorm ideas for a new type of mattress (气垫) . Test subjects had the most successful discussions when the noise in the background was noticeable but not too loud.
While a quiet environment may make it easier to read a book, the authors of the study say that moderate background noise creates just enough of a distraction to force people to think more imaginatively without breaking their focus so completely that they can’t think at all.
Should we all head for Starbucks to get creative Not necessarily.
Researchers found limited work time surrounded by the low-level noise of a coffeehouse is what really stimulates creativity.
Equally, working in a café environment isn’t good for everybody. The productivity boost (提高) was most obvious among those who were naturally creative to begin with.
