The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was eager to go to high school for my first week.
When I got to school on the morning of the first day, I realized how large the school was and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. And then a kind senior showed up and guided me to my classroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Jimmy. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher.
After finishing four periods, I didn’t feel too bad. However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My literature teacher is Mr. Smith. He told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this term. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was anxious.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的) : the size of the campus, the crowds and the seniors, having a totally different experience that I had never had before was really exciting.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Maybe your friends from middle school are going to a different high school. Even if you know other freshmen, you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upper-class men. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts. These are helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you also get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more after-school activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Middle school taught you the basis of academics, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
8. What does the underlined word “orientation” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Examination. B. Game. C. Discussion. D. Training.
9. What are freshmen probably worried about
A. The learning task. B. The ability to make friends.
C. The relationship with teacher. D. The freshman orientation.
10. Extracurricular activities mainly help students ________.
A. build up healthy bodies B. develop friendships
C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability
11. This passage is written for ________.
A. freshmen at high school B. freshmen’s parents
C. middle school students D. upper-class men in high school.
【答案】8 D 9. A 10. C 11. A
D
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
12. Which of the following represents (代表) a fixed mindset
A. I’m at the starting point of my ability. B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time. D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
13. What might the author encourage parents to do
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
14. What is the third weapon mainly about
A. Enjoying good health. B. Owning the ability to say no.
C. Balancing schoolwork and play. D. Developing time management skills.
15. Which one is the best title of the passage
A. Making friends in High School
B. Academic Challenges in High School
C. Differences between Middle School and High School
D. Preparations for High School: What you need to know
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. D
