Dear Sir / Madam,
I am Li Hua, a student from Senior Grade 2. I am writing to express my keen interest in the upcoming online cultural exchange program and to seek more detailed information.
I would be grateful if you could provide us with some key details. Specifically, I would like to know the tentative schedule and the expected duration of the event. Moreover, I am curious about the main format of the activities and if there are any specific requirements for participants, such as language skills or prior preparation. I’m convinced the program will allow students from both schools to foster mutual understanding and it will undoubtedly be a vivid way to showcase our local culture.
Thank you for your time and dedication. I am eagerly awaiting your response and hope to contribute to this meaningful event.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Possible version 1:
In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. I tightly grasped the corners of my clothes, my palms sweating profusely, and my breathing became rapid. When Vicki asked me if I had any knowledge about men's clothing styles, I opened my mouth, but my throat felt dry. I could only stutteringly reply that I only knew some basic styles. I secretly observed her expression, fearing that she would be disappointed in me. Unexpectedly, Vicki showed no dissatisfaction at all. Instead, she patted me on the shoulder affectionately and said, “Don't worry. This is all normal. Everyone starts from knowing nothing. I'll teach you step by step. As long as you're willing to learn, there's definitely no problem.” Her eyes were full of encouragement, which made my originally tense heartstrings relax a little.
Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. Vicki first took me around the men's clothing area, introducing the characteristics of different styles of clothing and the suitable customer groups in detail. I listened attentively and asked my questions from time to time. Under her guidance, I tried to introduce a shirt to a customer. At first, I was a bit reserved, but seeing Vicki smiling and nodding encouragingly beside me, I gradually got into the swing of things, and my words flowed more smoothly. The customer was satisfied with my introduction and finally bought the shirt. At that moment, I felt a great sense of achievement in my heart and was even more looking forward to continuing to learn and grow in this position..
Possible version 2:
In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. My fingers clenched the fabric of my clothes so tightly that my knuckles turned white, while my palms were slick with sweat, and my breath came in short, ragged gasps. When Vicki inquired about my familiarity with men's fashion, I opened my mouth, only to find my throat parched. Words stumbled out in a stammer as I managed to convey my meager knowledge of basic styles. My eyes darted furtively to her face, anxiously gauging her reaction. To my surprise, Vicki's countenance remained devoid of disappointment. Instead, she reached out and gave my shoulder a reassuring pat, saying, “There's no need to fret. This is entirely normal. Everyone has to start from scratch. I'll guide you through every step. As long as you're eager to learn, success is within your reach.” Her eyes, brimming with warmth and encouragement, caused the tension in my chest to ease slightly.
Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. Vicki led me on a comprehensive tour of the men's clothing section, meticulously elucidating the unique features of each garment and the demographics they catered to. I hung on to her every word, interjecting with questions whenever something piqued my curiosity. Under her watchful eye, I summoned the courage to approach a customer and present a shirt. Initially, I was hesitant and self - conscious, but as I caught sight of Vicki's approving smile and encouraging nods, my inhibitions melted away. Words flowed more freely, and my enthusiasm for the product became palpable. To my delight, the customer was impressed with my pitch and decided to make the purchase. In that instant, a wave of pride and accomplishment washed over me, fueling my eagerness to delve deeper into my role and continue my journey of growth in this dynamic workplace.

1. W: Mr. Lawrence, the Olsons are here. Do you want me to show them the way to your office now
M: Oh! I totally forgot they were coming two hours early today. Please just bring them some coffee and have them sit in the waiting room. I’ll be right out.
2. M: Oh, your daughter is so cute in this picture! How old was she
W: I think she was five because that was when we went to Los Angeles. You can see the ocean in the background.
3. M: I’m going to shave and take a shower. Just give me thirty minutes, OK
W: Last time you said that, it took you an hour to get ready. I don’t want to keep my parents waiting. It’s already 5:30!
4. W: Listen, you haven’t said a word to me about my new hairstyle. I just want to hear your honest opinion. I promise I won’t be upset if you don’t like it. So, what do you think
M: Um… no comment.
5. M: Do you have any books on the 18th century British history I need to do some research.
W: Well, we have a whole section upstairs Is this for a paper you’re writing
M: Actually, my mother-in-law is visiting next week, and she’s a history professor. I just want to impress her.
6. W: Excuse me. Are you Mark Allen, the painter
M: My name is Mark Allen, but actually, I don’t paint anymore. (6) I make wood and metal sculptures. I haven’t painted since… wait a minute! Don’t I know you from somewhere
W: I wasn’t sure if you’d recognize me…
M: Helen Is that you
W: In the flesh!
M: Wow, I haven’t seen you since art school. How are you
W: I’m great. I saw you from across the room looking at that photograph, and I knew it was you. You haven’t changed a bit!
M: Listen, I’m supposed to meet with the museum director to discuss some of my work. (7) Do you want to get a bite to eat afterwards
W: (7) Yes, I do.
7. M: (8) What’s that smell Are you painting the house or something
W: (8) No, I’m trying to clean the kitchen I got this new product that’s 100% natural. It was on sale, and I figured I’d try something “green” for a change.
M: I don’t like the way it smells.
W: I don’t mind that so much. What I’m not crazy about is the fact that it doesn’t clean very well. It works about as well as plain water. I’ve tried to get some stains off the counter, and it just isn’t working.
M: (9) What’s the main ingredient
W: (9) I think it’s lemon juice. It also contains the juice from some African plant.
M: Hmm. I’m all for using natural products, but only if they do what they’re supposed to do! Maybe we should go back to the regular stuff.
W: I think you’re right.
8. W: (10) Doctor, I don’t feel so great.
M: Where does it hurt
W: That’s just it. I’m not in any pain. In fact, I feel nothing. (10) (11) I haven’t had any feeling in my fingers since yesterday. I feel a bit light-headed, too, but I wouldn’t necessarily describe it as painful.
M: I see. Did you have some kind of accident over the past couple of days
W: Well, I didn’t fall down and bump my head or anything, but someone ran into me from behind on the freeway a week ago. He wasn’t going very fast, and I felt fine afterwards. Do you think that could have something to do with it
M: (12) I’ m not sure. I’d like to run some tests. Are you taking medicine
M: I take something for my skin problem once a day, but that’s it.
W: (12) All right. The nurse will be here in a moment, and we’ll get started.
9. M: (13) Welcome to Price Club! Can I see your membership card, please
W: (13) This is actually my first time here. My neighbor is a member, and she recommended that I come with my husband and check it out.
M: Well, welcome! We offer great prices on all the things you use every day. (14) Most of our items are sold in large quantities. When we sell larger packages of things, our storage and transportation costs go down dramatically, and we pass the savings on to our customers.
W: (15) How much larger are we talking about I don’t need to buy fifteen pounds of nuts at a time or anything…
M: (15) No, it’s more like buying twenty-four rolls of toilet paper instead of twelve.
W: Do you sell other things besides food and household items
M: Oh, we sell everything from TVs and computers to diamond rings and vitamins. Our products change every week.
W: How much does a membership cost
M: (16) It’s 150 dollars for a one-year membership, but you get a 5% cash bonus at the end of the year. Most folks report that the year-end bonus pays for the membership.
W: It certainly sounds like a good deal. But I’m still not sure.
M: How about if I give you a guest pass for the day You can make a decision about the membership afterwards.
W: Great!

A
The greening of planes, trains and automobiles
Moving goods and people around the world is responsible for a large part of global CO2 emissions (排放). As the world races to decarbonize everything, it faces particular problems with transportation — which accounts for about a quarter of our energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Here’s the breakdown of the emissions in 2018 for different modes of transport.
The fuels for transport need to be not just green, cheap and powerful, but also lightweight and safe enough to be carried around. Each mode of transport has its specific fuel needs. Much is still to be settled, but here are some of the solutions to get us going green.
PLANES—Synthetic hydrocarbons The hardest sector to decarbonize is aviation. One long-term option for sustainable fuel for planes is to make hydrocarbons from recycled air. CARS—Batteries Batteries are energy-efficient and electric cars can plug into existing systems and services. New solid-state batteries will take a car farther on a single charge.
TRAINS—Electricity Some trains are already electrified through rails or wires; others can be made electric in pretty simple ways. TRUCKS—Hydrogen Fuel Cells Hydrogen fuel cells are a lighter choice than batteries for trucks, but making green hydrogen is expensive. SHIPS—Liquid Ammonia Liquid ammonia is easy to keep and transport, but it is hard to ignite (点燃) and requires an engine redesign.
This energy transition (变革) is global, and the amount of renewable energy the world will need is “a little bit mind-blowing,” says mechanical engineer Keith Wipke at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It’s estimated that the global demand for electricity could more than double by 2050. Fortunately, analyses suggest that renewables are up to the task. “We need to speed up the development of green energy, and it will all get used,” says Wipke.
21. What percentage of global transport emissions did road vehicles account for in 2018
A. 11.6%. B. 45.1%. C. 74.5%. D. 86.1%.
22. Which mode of transport can go green comparatively easily
A. Planes. B. Trucks. C. Trains. D. Ships.
23. What does Wipke suggest regarding energy transition
A. Limiting fuel consumption. B. Putting more effort into renewables.
C. Improving energy efficiency. D. Making electricity more affordable.
B
I was 21 when I broke the world record as the youngest woman to ski solo (独自地) to the South Pole. On the hardest day, snow piled up to my knees, the wind howled like a wild beast, and the cold pierced through every layer of my clothes. My sledge (雪橇) felt heavier with each step, my muscles burning, and my breath shallow in the thin air. But I refused to stop.
Growing up in Norway, I was easily exposed to the wilderness. Stories of Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole, filled me with wonder. And that was when my desire to explore nature was born. I spent hours skiing in the mountains, camping under stars, and starting campfires with frozen fingers.
At 14, I made a brave decision — to ski across Greenland. Most people doubted me. I was just under 5 feet tall and looked more like a child than an explorer. But Lars Ebbesen, a famous polar guide, saw my determination and trained me. He taught me how to fix broken equipment with frozen hands and read the sky for signs of danger. “You must be strong and smart,” he told me over and over.
To prove myself, I then went on a training trip to Finnmark, where darkness ruled and temperatures fell to -35℃. I learned to set up tents with frozen hands and sleep through winds that shook the earth. Finally I set off with Lars and it took us 28 days to cross Greenland.
Encouraged, at 15, I decided my next goal was Antarctica. My father helped me make plans. My mother, though cautious, eventually supported me. When I finally began my 1,130 km journey to the South Pole last November, I was 21. Some days, I cried behind my glasses, struggling through snowstorms, dragging my aching body forward. But I never gave up. Fifty-four days later, I reached the South Pole. I stood in silence, tears freezing on my cheeks. I sent Lars a chick emoji — at last, the “polar egg” hatched.
24. What inspired the author to explore nature

C. Her mother’s encouragement. D. Her admiration for Roald.
25. How did Lars help the author
A. By teaching her survival skills. B. By financing her exploration.
C. By training her to ski skillfully. D. By convincing her parents to support her.
26. What can we learn from paragraph 4 about the author
A. She gathered some hands-on experience.
B. She went to Finnmark accompanied by a guide.
C. She was praised for her courage by many people.
D. She met many challenges when crossing Greenland.
27. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Outgoing and caring. B. Ambitious and sensitive.
C. Humorous and considerate. D. Adventurous and determined.
C
When discussions are getting heated, divisions on opinions potentially lead to some awkward moments. This causes many of us to struggle with how to convince people to change their minds and how to argue our side effectively. Unfortunately, we’ve already become quite divided.
One study showed that when people receive information against their beliefs, their brains aren’t as active as when they receive information that confirms their beliefs. Humans have a well-documented bias (偏见) called the “confirmation bias”, which is a tendency to seek out information that confirms our existing views and to avoid information that disconfirms them.
Throwing data at people isn’t at all effective in changing minds and especially hearts. Instead, people just find it super annoying. Luckily, research has provided some guidance about best practices, and, not surprisingly, they all suggest what our parents have been telling us for decades: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. In fact, it turns out that instead of citing why you are right and someone else is wrong in a heated conversation, one of the most effective strategies you can use for changing someone’s mind is to find areas where you agree.
Another thing we can do is to be open to other perspectives (观点) . We can start by acknowledging our own confirmation bias and making a conscious effort to override it. We can also try to take other people’s perspectives. And better yet — ask them for it. Ask them why they feel the way they do and what would change their mind. Be open to admitting that you could be wrong and make it easy for others to admit their own mistakes.
Finally, make new friends — friends that are different from you. Make your bias a disconfirmation bias; in other words, when you have an opinion on something, don’t just read information that confirms it. Instead, make an effort to find information that could potentially prove you wrong. If you were right all along, this exercise will only make your arguments stronger. If you were wrong, your mind will have been opened up to new ideas. Either way, this kind of open-mindedness will give you a brand-new perspective on life, and you might even make some unlikely new friends in the process.
28. Which can illustrate “confirmation bias”
A. We tend to welcome different ideas.
B. We accept messages from the others.
C. We argue against points of disagreement.
D. We prefer information in line with our views
29. What does the underlined word “honey” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Following advice. B. Sharing common ground.
C. Admitting mistakes. D. Blocking different ideas.
30. How can we benefit from our bias according to the last paragraph
A. By letting go of our own opinion.
B. By making arguments more reliable.
C. By opening up minds to new friends.
D. By securing information opposite to ours.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. How to negotiate with others
B. Why it’s so hard to change hearts and minds
C. How to shift minds in polarized communication
D. Why open-mindedness is effective in conversations
D
The newest, hottest power couple doesn’t live in Hollywood. It’s actually the marriage of solar panels and reservoirs (水库): Known as floatovoltaics (浮动光伏), these devices on simple floats (浮体) generate power while shading the water below.
The primary advantage of the technology is that no trees need to be cleared for solar farms. As an added bonus, the water cools the panels, increasing their efficiency. Research shows that floatovoltaics on just a small share of global lakes and reservoirs could meet nearly a third of the US’s annual electricity demand.
As floatovoltaic systems expand, with the market expected to grow 23% annually from 2025 to 2030, scientists are studying their impact on ecosystems. “We shouldn’t be expanding clean energy at the cost of biodiversity loss,” warns Elisa Stephens, a researcher at the University of California, Davis. “This is a great opportunity to increase our research and develop smart designs and better siting practices to have this happy marriage between a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem and renewable energy expansion.”
Most floatovoltaics are placed on reservoirs. When paired with the existing water power plants, the panels can generate additional daytime power. This combination can make up for seasonal drops in water or sunlight, ensuring a more stable yearly output.
Though artificial, reservoirs host lots of water life that floatovoltaics can interact with. Would this bring risks or benefits “Our customers have seen migrating (迁徙的) birds feeding and resting on the floats,” reports Chris Bachman of a leading floatovoltaics company.
Ecological considerations get trickier where there are unforeseen knock-on effects. Experiments show that shading from panels can slow the growth of algae that fish eat and also reduce harmful algae, affecting the food chain. Floats can hide fish from birds that hunt them but may also serve as safe habitats for these birds. “We need to monitor for long periods to understand the big picture,” says freshwater ecologist Simpson Cardoso.
Scientists and companies are discussing wider spacing between panels and avoiding construction during waterbirds’ sensitive periods, such as migration and nesting. “There can definitely be that kind of ecological balance,” says Stephens.
32. How does the author introduce floatovoltaics
A. By giving a technical definition. B. By explaining how they work.
C. By relating them to a married couple. D. By describing a popular movie scene.
33. What is scientists’ major concern about floatovoltaics
A. Their influence on ecosystems and biodiversity.
B. Their seasonal changes in power output.
C. Their high cost of construction and maintenance.
D. Their competition against traditional solar farms.

第二节:读后续写 (满分25分)
Dressed in my white polo shirt and black pants, I was ready for my first day as a fashion’s worker. I had been working on a register for over two weeks when they decided that I was ready to work as a shop assistant.
I remember the feeling of excitement because this was something new, and nervousness because I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t even know whom I would be working with. So many thoughts came floating into my head as I walked from my car to the store.
“What if the customers don’t like me What if I can’t handle this job Will I remember everything ” With my mind filled with all these what ifs, I walked back to the break room and put my purse in my locker. Then, with my shaking hands and upset stomach, I walked back to the front of the store and met with Theresa at the service desk where Theresa greeted me warmly.
“We are going to have you work with Vicki today. She is a friendly lady and takes charge of the men’s department. She can teach you how to communicate with the customers. So let’s take a walk back to the men’s department, and she can get you trained in,” Theresa said.“Okay,” I replied with nervousness.
Walking for what seemed like a long time, we finally reached our destination. Vicki, a young lady in her early thirties, came bouncing out to receive us with a light- hearted walk and a brilliant white smile. We must have caught her a little off guard because she stopped, stared at us for a moment, and said, “Hi Theresa!”
“Hey, Vicki! I’d like you to meet Kayli. She is going to be working with you for the next couple of weeks.” Theresa introduced me to this young lady.
“Hi, Kayli,” she replied with more enthusiasm than I had expected.
“Well, I’ll leave it up to you, Vicki.” Theresa happily replied, then turned and walked away, leaving Vicki and me standing there.
