On May 3, I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of pressing a switch. Hills, sky and forest revealed their purples, blues and greens. Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark branches stretch out in unpruned(未经修剪的) abandon.Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out to prune(修剪) a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbours opened their windows and stepped onto their porches(门廊). These were people I barely knew, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens. My mobile-home neighbour was the first to speak. “You’re not going to cut it down, are you ” she asked anxiously.Soon, half the neighbourhood joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder.Just the other day, I saw one neighbour at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken to anyone in our neighbourhood at length. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”28. How did the author feel about the sudden change of the view A.Surprised. B. Depressed. C. Frightened. D. Annoyed.29. Why did the neighbours open their windows and step out A. They intended to greet the author.B. They felt astonished to notice a stranger.C. They meant to protect their personal gardens.D. They wondered what might happen to the tree.30. What can be inferred about the apple tree in the neighbourhood A. It served as a bond. B. It was left unattended.C. It stayed in a poor condition. D. It proved to be unappealing.31. What did the neighbour value most according to the last paragraph A. The arrival of spring. B. The neighbourhood gathering.C. The pruning of the apple tree. D. Entertainment in the long winter.DAn artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities, researchers found in a primary study.Developed by the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures. Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to put in electrodes (电极). This new approach “could provide a possible path to help patients with communication problems, avoiding the use of surgeries,” says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King, a Meta AI researcher. King and his colleagues trained a computational tool, also known as a language model, to detect words and sentences on 56,000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages. The team applied an AI with this language model to databases from four institutions that included brain activity from 169 volunteers. In these databases, participants listened to various stories and sentences, while the people’s brains were scanned by magnetoencephalography (MEG) (脑磁图).Then with the help of a computational method that helps account for physical differences among actual brains, the team tried to decode what participants had heard using just three seconds of brain activity data from each person. The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1,000 possibilities. Using MEG, the correct answer was in the AI’s top 10 guesses, the researchers found.“The new study is the decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees. “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we're quite a long way away.”32. Whom might the AI benefit A. People unable to read. B. People who are unconscious.C. People who can't move around. D. People unable to communicate normally.33. What is the main idea of paragraph 4 A. The purpose of the AI. B. The significance of the AI.C. The advantage of the AI. D. The working principle of the AI.34. What does the AI require to make its prediction A. Speech production. B. Top ten guesses.C. Patterns of brain activity. D. Disabled volunteers.35. What is the best title for the text A. A New Way to Decode Speech B. The Employment of MEG TechnologyC. An Advance in Artificial Intelligence D. He always called me the nickname(绰号)“Germy,” which meant “dirty,” instead of my real name “Jamie.” Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So, when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said. The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled (开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So, when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shifted their desks away. “What’s your problem ” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.During recess (课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why ” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor (谣言).注意:续写词数应为 150 左右;请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
