Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes (笔刷) before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.
In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
24. How did Benjamin get the brushes at first
A. He cut a camel’s hair. B. He cut some fur from a cat.
C. He asked his father to buy them. D. An artist offered a hand to him.
25. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest

A. They helped him master the use of paints.
B. They helped him get to know other painters.
C. They helped him make up his mind to become a painter.
D. They helped him learn to appreciate landscape paintings.
27. What is the passage mainly about
A. Benjamin’s visit to Philadelphia.
B. Williams’ influence on Benjamin.
C. The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist.
D. The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington.

A new study from the University of Cambridge shows how small environmental changes can have great effects on human behavior. Even the rise of skateboarding (滑板运动) is the result of the deep relationships between humans and the climate.
“To make connections between climate and society, we often look into the past, but as we go further back, the evidence gets thinner,” said lead author Professor Büntgen. “We wanted to find a more modern example where we had lots of data to look at. That is how we began to study skateboarding.”
As was recorded, the prosperity (繁荣) of post-war America resulted in the building of more than 150,000 swimming pools in California during the 1960s. However, California suffered the greatest drought (旱灾) in the 1970s. The government’s water agencies responded to this crisis. Their response was ordering strict cuts in water use. One of these strict rules was a ban (禁令) that stopped people from filling up their backyard swimming pools. As a result, many of these pools were empty, making them ideal playgrounds for freestyle skateboarders. Naturally, skateboarding exploded in popularity.
Büntgen said, “California used to be the center of US surf culture. The popularity and influence of surf culture was very important to the rise of skateboarding, which is why it could have only happened in California. You could have had the same drought, the same pools in somewhere like Phoenix, but since Phoenix doesn’t have a rich surf culture, professional skateboarding couldn’t have started there.”
With the rise of professional skateboarding came the industrial production of polyurethane (聚氨酯) wheels, which allowed skaters to make faster turns at higher speeds than they could with earlier steel (钢铁) wheels. All these factors made skateboarding more popular. Nowadays, it is a multibillion-dollar industry.
The example of California best shows that local climate change can have major effects on human society.
28. What is the finding of the new study
A. Climate changes affect human behavior.
B. Popular games benefit greatly from droughts.
C. Culture is related to an industry’s development.
D. The environment changes people’s relationships.
29. Which is true about the swimming pools in California
A. They went through ups and downs.
B. They were in great popularity in the 1970s.
C. Skateboarding playgrounds replaced all of them.
D. Building the swimming pools led to the great drought.
30. According to Büntgen, what is a special factor that helps skateboarding grow in California
A. Drought. B. Location. C. Swimming pools. D. Surf culture.
31. From which section of a newspaper is this text most probably taken
A. Society. B. Health. C. Education. D. Business
D
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed (固定的) mindset believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow (枕头)” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But with the first real day of high school coming, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
32. Which of the following represents (代表) a fixed mindset
A. I’m at the starting point of my ability.
B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time.
D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
33. What might the author encourage parents to do according to the passage
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
34. What is the third weapon mainly about
A. Enjoying good health. B. Being able to say no.
C. Planning schedules properly. D. Balancing schoolwork and play.
35. Which one is the best title of the passage
A. Making Friends in High School.
B. Academic Challenges in High School.
C. Differences between Middle School and High School.
D. Preparations for High School: What You Need to Know.

What to Do When You Fail in Life
Most people are afraid of failure. The truth is that everyone, including all successful people, has ever failed time after time and will fail again. 36
Learn from it
No matter how hard you try to avoid it, failure will happen. Having a “no fear” attitude towards failure does not mean you should expect to fail, but accept it when it happens. sd37 Failure makes us rethink, reconsider, and find new ways and strategies to achieve our goals. Through failure, we will get to know ourselves better.
Stop fearing it
38 Instead, you need to push yourself to go to the limits (极限). When you have a no-fear attitude and keep on trying despite the former failures, your determination, ability, talent and creativity can be made the best use of.
Let go of your overconfidence
You will not learn from the mistakes you have made, be open to other people’s views or see the situations clearly when your overconfidence is in charge. 39 We need to listen to and learn from other people if we want to see what needs to change in order to succeed.
Improve your mood and cheer up again
We all feel down after having failed, which is natural, human, and unavoidable. But how we respond to our failures is what decides our road to success. One way of improving your mood is listing the things you are grateful for at the moment, which will strengthen your positive emotions (情绪). 40
A. There is value in failure.
B. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
C. The ordinary people experience failure, too.
D. It always blocks (遮挡) your eyes and mind.
E. To reach your personal best, you don’t need to fear failure.
F. So do’nt be afraid of failure, which is part of everyone’s road to success.
G. Reading stories of successful people is another way that can cheer us up.

When the shrill (尖锐的) ring of the phone echoed (回响) through the living room, Jane was still sleeping. She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock! Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night for several days and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!”
It was the voice of her father, a sea man who seldom returned home due to his duties earning money to support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere (氛围). At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities, earning the pride of their parents.
“Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend ” Jane asked, pretending to be slightly annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late morning. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment (尴尬). How could she have forgot such an important day!
While chatting with her father, Jane’s eyes wandered around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had been too busy with work to deal with such housework.
Looking at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.玉溪一中2025—2026学年上学期高一年级月考一

Dear Peter,
I’m sorry to hear that you find it hard to manage your time in high school. Many students experience the same anxiety at first, so please don’t worry too much.
Here are a few suggestions that might help. First, try creating a daily schedule to plan your tasks. Break large tasks into smaller parts to make them easier to finish, and the important ones should be put first. Also, you’d better put your phone away while studying so that you can focus. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you have difficulty finishing homework.
Remember, it takes time to adapt. I believe you’ll catch up soon. Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. After listening to Jane, Tom readily accepted her idea. The big cleaning plan began. Jane collected the clothes from the sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile, Tom was busy cleaning the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what tiring work his Mum had at home! One hour later, the cleaning work was finally finished. They even prepared a simple breakfast for Mum. With everything ready for the big moment, they knocked at their mother’s bedroom door excitedly.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes, she was moved to tears and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said proudly. Around 11 a.m., another surprise-- the cake that Dad had ordered-- arrived as well. Mum took out her smartphone, took a picture of the three of them eating the cake happily, and sent it to Dad. What an unforgettable birthday for her!

Supported by many generous people, we are collecting and donating things for poor people, walking kids home from school, helping kids with their homework, cleaning up local parks, and lots of other useful things for the community. Therefore, to keep working on these projects, we need more volunteers. We are looking for teenagers who love to participate in community development work. Once chosen, you will become a member of our local and national community development network. You will also have a chance to meet and share ideas with our experienced volunteers.
If you are interested in these projects to help the community and like to meet teenagers with similar interests, please fill in an online application form on our website and send your application letter to us no later than the 15th of March. Don’t miss this opportunity! We look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your attention.玉溪一中2025—2026学年上学期高一年级第一次月考
