Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a famous German composer. He learned music young from his strict father and showed great talent. He moved to Vienna, the music capital, in 1792. In Vienna, he became a famous piano player and composer. Sadly, he began losing his hearing around age 26. This was disastrous, but he kept composing.
Lead in
Despite his deafness, Beethoven wrote his most exciting and famous music during his “middle” period. This includes his powerful Fifth Symphony and the nature-inspired Sixth Symphony. Almost completely deaf later in life, his music became deeper and more complex. His greatest work is the Ninth Symphony, famous for its final part, the “Ode to Joy” – a beautiful tune about human unity. Beethoven died in 1827. He is one of history’s greatest composers because his music expressed strong emotion and changed music forever.

Flashback (闪回/倒叙)
In some texts, the events are not put exactly in time order; instead, an event that happened earlier is put in the middle of the main story, which is called flashback. You can tell you are reading a flashback when the story goes back to the past with a change of scene. There is usually a transitional sentence indicating the change.
