C.Social science majors’ advantages.
D.The features of the current job market.
【答案】11.B 12.B 13.C
【原文】There are many advantages for the social science major because this high-tech “Information Age” demands people who are flexible and who have good communication skills.
In large companies, many social science majors take up important positions. Studies found that social science majors have achieved greater managerial success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses. Moreover, social science majors are most suited to change, which meets the need of the high-speed world we now live in.
Social science majors are not only experiencing success in their long-term company jobs, but they are also finding jobs more easily. A study showed that many companies had filled a large percentage of their entry-level positions with social science graduates. The study also showed that the most popular quality in a person who was looking for a job was communication skills, noted as “very important” by 92 percent of the companies. Social science majors have these skills, often without knowing how important they are. It is probably due to these skills that they have been offered a wide variety of positions.
Finally, although some social science majors may still find it more difficult than their technically trained classmates to land the first job, recent graduates report that they don’t regret their choice of study.
Questions:
11. Why can social science majors meet the need of the high-speed world
12. What kind of people are welcomed by companies in the job market

【答案】14.C 15.B 16.C
【原文】Many people think New York is a noisy city. Now even the insides of taxis are noisy. When you get into a taxi, you hear the voice of a well-known opera singer, sports announcer or Broadway actress giving instructions. The voice of a famous person tells you what to do. One popular singer gives this message: “Cats have nine lives, but you have only one, so fasten your seat belt.” Other voices say things such as “Don’t forget to collect all your belongings.” People often leave handbags, umbrellas in taxis.
There is a good reason for the messages. There are more than 12,000 taxis in New York, and every year taxis get into more than 15,000 accidents. In an accident, people who don’t wear seat belts may easily get hurt. Every year about 11,000 people are injured in this way.
Many people are annoyed by the voices. Taxi drivers in particular dislike the message. “I play the messages 12 hours a day. I hear the same voices 60 times a day. It makes me crazy,” says Tom, “I am a 45-year-old taxi driver. But if I don’t play the messages, I get fined $100.” A lot of passengers complain too. They think it is too noisy.

M: I don’t know a great deal about the work.
W: But have you got any ideas about it You must have thought about it.
M: Yes, I, er, I suppose he has a lot of, er, what is called policy-making to do. And, mm, he’d have to know how to work with people and all about the company.
W: Mm.
M: Yes, I, er, should think a manager must know, er, something about all aspects of the work.
W: Yes, that’s right. We like our executive staff to undergo a thorough training. Young men on our trainee scheme have to work through every branch in the company.
M: Well, if I had to do it, I suppose. But I was thinking that my French and German would mean that I could specialize in overseas work. I’d like to be some sort of an export salesman and travel abroad.
W: You know the charm of traveling abroad disappears when you’ve got to work hard. It’s not all fun and game.
M: Oh, yes, I realize that. It’s just that my knowledge of languages would be useful.
W: Now, Mr. Smith, is there anything you want to ask me
M: Well, there’s one or two things. I’d like to know if I’d have to sign a contract, what the salary is and what the prospects are.
W: With our scheme, there is no contract involved. Your progress is kept under constant review. If we, at any time, decide we don’t like you, then that’s that: we reserve the right to dismiss you. Of course, you have the same choice about us. As for salary, you’d be on our fixed scale starting at 870 pounds. For the successful trainee, the prospects are very good.

18.What does the man think is his advantage of working overseas

II. Grammar and Vocabulary (20分)
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Some persons look on laws with fear, hatred, or annoyance. Laws seem to limit people’s freedom to do many things they would like to do. 21 laws may prevent us from doing things we wish to do at the moment, laws make everyone's life safer and more pleasant.
22 laws we could not hold on to our property; we could not go to bed at night expecting to wake up in the morning and find that we had not been robbed; no stores 23 we buy food, clothes, and other necessities could stay open and sell to us. Our banks would not be safe places 24 (keep) our money.
Social life would be impossible without laws to control the way people treat one another. It is not the laws 25 should be feared but the trouble that comes to everyone when laws are broken. Once this is understood, a citizen will not fear or hate the law. 26 (understand) the need for good laws and the evil results of breaking laws is the first requirement of good citizenship and government.
Philosophers once 27 (believe) that in prehistoric time people lived without laws in a “state of nature”. People were free to do 28 they pleased unless someone stronger stopped them by force. As a result, life became so dangerous and unsafe that leaders 29 create laws to protect life and property.
This is no longer believed to be true. Scholars now think that as soon as people began living in small groups, they worked out rules for getting along with one other. In time everyone accepted and supported the rules. Such rules and habits of life are called folkways.
Folkways are probably the real beginning of human laws, 30 of religion, morals, and education. As life became more complex, folkways became more complete guides to living. After thousands of years, some of the important folkways were put into writing as the earlier laws.

Three Ways for Scientists to Manage Their Time Better
It is not necessary to become a workaholic to be a good scientist, although scientists often have great 31 for their research, and frequently work long hours. The amount and quality of what you achieve critically 32 on how effectively you manage your time. Here are some tips on how to better manage your time as a scientist.
● Make a plan
Consider blocking out your calendar into chunks of time 33 to a specific task. This is particularly important when you are writing a paper or report. Next comes the 34 step of prioritizing. Highlight tasks on your list to signify their urgency. Focus only on one item at a time: the others can wait their turn. This list needs to be updated and reviewed 35 .

During your working day, allow yourself time to think, to be open to new ideas and to chat with others about new methods.
Try to avoid looking at your work e-mails when you are not working. They do not need to be answered until the next working day. The world will not 37 if you delay reading some e-mails.
● Don’t try to chase every great idea
The other side of permitting yourself time to explore 38 ideas, as well as the suggestions of managers and colleagues, is that you are left with a(n) 39 list of new directions to investigate.
Try to distinguish between things that would be nice to have and things that are vital to the 40 of your project, or PhD, on time.
Succeeding against the odds and in the face of time pressure is one of the most valuable experiences you can offer to future employer.

At a time when scientists know more than they ever have before about the inner lives of animals and when concerns about animal rights become large, many experts think that zoos need a major change if they’ re going to last.
To some leaders in the field, the Philadelphia Zoo is the best model out there, but on the other side of the country, a 41 vision of the future is playing out. At Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo, the elephant exhibit, where countless children watched elephants play, now sits 42 . The zoo, long 43 as a world leader in innovative design, built a $3 million state-of-the-art facility for the species in the 1980s. But in recent years, animal-rights advocates had criticized the exhibit as inhumane for being too small and not 44 the elephants’ natural living area. Under pressure from activists following the death of an elephant in 2014, and thanks to new guidelines from the nation’s main zoo organization, Woodland Park officials decided to 45 one of its most popular exhibits and place the elephants elsewhere.
Nearly two centuries after the first modern zoo opened in London’s Regent’s Park, the very concept of a place where families can visit and observe animals is being 46 like never before. Across the U. S. and around the world, zoos are finding that balancing the demands of entertainment, education and conservation is increasingly 47 . Ethical (伦理的) concerns have been coupled with 48 fears — both for people and for animals — following an incident in May when officials at the Cincinnati Zoo shot and killed a 17-year-old gorilla named Harambe to protect a child who’d fallen into the exhibit. More 49 , there’s a greater sensitivity to the environmental implications of zoos.
Ask a dozen zoo directors why these places should exist today and you’ll get a different answer every time. Education, conservation and science all 50 . But the 51 answer is cultivating sympathy for animals.
Study after study has shown that many animal species are far smarter and more 52 than previously understood, giving new insights into how they may suffer from anxiety and depression when they are removed from 53 . That has forced a difficult existential question: If we acknowledge that creatures suffer when they’re trapped. should they be kept in zoos Not even those who have 54 the cause for more humane exhibits have an answer. “Even the best zoos today are based on captivity and coercion (囚禁与胁迫).” says Jon Coe, the legendary zoo designer, “To me, that’s the 55 fault.”

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Last semester in my creative writing class, I asked 18 high school students if one of them would share something they’d written. After several minutes’ deadly silence, from her seat in the corner, a quiet senior, who usually hid behind a curtain of lovely hair, raised her hand and said, “I’ll read mine.”
As we sat in the sleepy, airless room, the girl’s essay woke us up. She described the colour of white light, then a dirty street, then a personal encounter. Every word mattered. Though her voice was soft, I could feel her words striking my insides like a hammer.
From their facial expressions, I could tell the other students were as surprised as I was. When the girl finished, she looked up at us, her eyes worried. But no one could speak. Envy had made us speechless.
One critic once called envy in his book, the hardest thing to acknowledge. Indeed, I don’t like talking about my own envy. I am ashamed of the ill will I occasionally bear towards women who enjoy what I don’t (shining fingernails, spring vacations...). However, Aristotle referred to envy as the close cousin of imitation. The good nature of imitation allows us to turn our distress into a pursuit of greatness. In practical terms, that means reading is an essential part of my writing process. To drag myself out of my predictable tendencies, I pick a volume of something so good that it stimulates me to become unstuck. With any project I undertake, I try to break up my time at the keyboard with time in a soft chair, consuming the words of others without allowing my envy of them to turn me to stone.
That day in my creative writing class after the silence following the student’s reading, there were a few “wows”. Then someone said, “I hate you! How can it be so good ”
Just as the girl made herself an easy target in sharing this intense, artful essay, the rest of my students also took risks in exposing their admiration. And everyone’s work grew from the experience. At the very heart of envy is desire—a force that ought to be at the heart of every human moment, ugly and beautiful, and that we attempt to set down in words.
56.In paragraph 2, why are the girl’s words described as “striking my insides like a hammer”
A.To highlight how brave the girl was.
B.To stress how impressive the girl’s essay was.
C.To develop a contrast against the silence of the class.
D.To show the author’s disappointment with the girl’s story.
57.The critic mentioned at the beginning of paragraph 4 is most likely to agree that _________.
A.women bear more ill will than men
B.imitation drives people into distress
C.people are reluctant to admit their envy
D.envy keeps writers stuck in their own style
58.In paragraph 4, “time in a soft chair” refers to the time the author spends in _________.
A.waiting B.writing C.reading D.resting
59.According to the author, envy is something _________.
A.that can be inspiring
B.that we should be ashamed of
C.that we need to overcome
D.that results from imitation

C
In a recent survey by NPR, 26 percent of rural Americans said there has been a time in the past few years when they needed health care, but did not get it. Some of them said it was because financial barriers kept them from seeing a doctor. But almost a majority of them said it was because health care was too far or difficult to get to.
To address this problem, the Wyoming Center on Aging at the University of Wyoming created a program called Healthy U. Based on a program originally developed at Stanford University, it supports people with a chronic disease and their caregivers by teaching self-management skills and offering a support group.
“In a rural area, if someone can manage their own health better and go to the doctor less often, then that’s a win for everybody,” says Janet Korpela, who works for Healthy U as program development specialist and runs workshops with volunteers for the program. “The volunteers, called ‘leaders’, don’t need a medical background and they just need to be willing to do the 40 hours of free training. Then they will go back into their communities to teach patients living with chronic conditions how to better manage their health,” she says.
“Over the course of six weeks, volunteers lead Healthy U participants in weekly meetings. Each meeting focuses on a single topic, like how to make the most of a visit to the doctor. There’s also time set aside in each week for participants to talk about their small weekly goals. That way participants can celebrate their successes sometimes. It’s also an opportunity for them to brainstorm solutions with their peers when they struggle.”
Marcia Ory, a professor and public health researcher, published a paper on how chronic disease self-management programs work. “It’s effective because most health happens at home,” she says. “Basically you teach people how to set small goals for healthy living. You teach them how to problem-solve. The program is an especially good fit for rural patients since it can be delivered where people live. And the population is less, but the need is just as great.”
63.What does “this problem” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Doctors tend to be beyond reach. B.Caregivers lack a medical background.
C.Villagers have no money to see a doctor. D.Many people suffer from chronic diseases.
64.What can volunteers in Healthy U do
A.Reduce the number of doctor visits. B.Get the chance to share their ideas.
C.Explain how to better manage their health. D.Have conversations with friends and family
65.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us
A.The way of solving problems. B.The effectiveness of the program.
C.The process of helping patients. D.The cause of the program’s success.
66.How does the author support the theme of the text
A.By giving examples. B.By stating arguments.
C.By explaining statistical data. D.By providing research results.

Students’ Journey to Empower Rural Heritage
From Aug. 18 to 22 a team of 15 Tsinghua University students, representing diverse backgrounds from China, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia, set foot on an overseas research exploration focusing on rural revitalization (振兴) in Indonesian villages, particularly within Nusa Tenggara Barat(NTB).
With the diverse cultural heritage, Indonesia is home to over 83,000 villages, each radiating its own charm and character. 67
The research mission took the students to Sukarara and Sade villages, two of NTB’s tourist destinations. 68 Sukarara and Sade are a world apart from the busy cities to which most of us are accustomed. The villages are a living test to Indonesia’s rich culture and its devotion to preserving traditions. Revitalizing these villages goes beyond mere economic development. 69 The weaving skills and architectural techniques of Sukarara and Sade villages are not only beautiful, but they are also an inseparable part to the identity of these communities. It’s essential that they strike a balance between progress and preservation.
As the journey came to an end, the students carry with them not only the memories of their experiences there, but also the responsibility to make a positive impact on these remarkable places. 70 They are optimistic that Indonesian villages can experience meaningful development, ultimately leading to increased opportunities for employment and an improved quality of life.
A.While these villages possess undeniable fascination, many remain underdeveloped.
B.This effort includes the knowledge exchange between the students and local villagers.
C.Both were selected for revitalization efforts led by the Village Revitalization Team.
D.In Sukarara, a local tradition requires girls to master weaving skills before marriage.
E.They decide to be a bridge between tradition and progress, united for their growth.

IV. Summary Writing (10分)
71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
I love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won’t find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity’s appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations. They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children’ s books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don’t encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110million a year, funding medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money

【答案】The instant he entered the house, he found that dinner had been prepared.
The instant he entered the house, he found that dinner had been prepared.
73.无论你下月是否离职,做好手头的工作非常重要。(essential)
【答案】Whether you will leave your job next month or not, it is essential to do the work at hand well.
非常重要”可用固定结构it’s essential to do sth.,it为形式主语,不定式短语为真正的主语,表示“做好手头的工作”可用动词短语do the work at hand well。故翻译为Whether you will leave your job next month or not, it is essential to do the work at hand well.
74.许多青少年经常发现平衡学业和课外活动很有挑战性。 (find+宾语+宾补, challenge)
【答案】Many teenagers find it quite challenging/a big challenge to balance study/schoolwork/academic performance and extra-curricular/after-class activities.
Many teenagers find it quite challenging/a big challenge to balance study/schoolwork/academic performance and extra-curricular/after-class activities。
75.如果你明天早上能在机场为王教授送行,我将非常感激。(it)
【答案】I would appreciate it if you could see professor Wang off at the airport tomorrow morning.
【详解】考查固定句型。“我将非常感激,如果……”为固定句型I would appreciate it if...,“给某人送行”为see sb. off,“在机场”为at the airport,“明天早上”为tomorrow morning,故整句翻译为I would appreciate if you could see professor Wang off at the airport tomorrow morning.

● Give yourself a break
Taking breaks is good for your brain. Don’t be hard on yourself: you will actually perform better if you take breaks and cultivate a life outside science. This might seem counter-intuitive (违反直觉的) with all those tasks on your list, but solutions to apparently difficult problems can come from a 36 brain — and a brain that can keep things in perspective.

Section B

Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
F.It’s about preserving the cultural heritage and ensuring traditions being passed down.
