W: Hello, today I’d like to talk about hidden talents. Hidden talents are abilities or skills that we all possess but often struggle to recognize. Just like you can’t see your own nose without a mirror, it can be challenging to identify your own talents. Therefore, it is important to explore and uncover these hidden abilities.
When you’re on a journey of self-discovery, start by looking into your past. Reflect on your life experiences and consider the things you’ve achieved. Ask yourself questions “What am I most proud of ” Think about moments when you were successful, moments when you felt about to burst with the pride of your success. These moments might point to your hidden talents.
Things that make you happy can also reveal your talents. Think about what you enjoy. You might not think of it as a talent but it probably is. Have you ever completely lost track of time You start doing something and you just don’t even notice time passing This might indicate your talent.
People around may see what you’re good at. Ask around, and people will usually be happy to tell you what they see as your talents. Make sure to talk to people that know you well but also people that just know you. They will see you in different ways and the differences that they see can tell you even more about yourself.

Although Ron Jenkins has a prestigious job at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and a doctorate from Harvard University, he’s not afraid to act the fool.
“Juggling tennis rackets and riding elephants are good lessons to learn in life,” Jenkins said. For him, comedy is the secret to survival. “I’m not embarrassed to express my ignorance, or to be ridiculous,” Jenkins said. “It’s a part of my profession.”
The professor, you see, is a clown. His Harvard doctorate is in clowning degree encompassing anthropology, theater, media and education. Laughter and taking risks have unlocked a lot of doors for Jenkins, who is now the chairman and artistic director of Wesleyan’s Theater Department. The idea that the spirit of laughter is the spirit of survival and a language that transcends all barriers is the great traditional belief of clowns.
Jenkins came to clowning only after pursuing a career in medicine. He grew up in a Philadelphia suburb. He said that he was “a singularly unfunny and painfully shy child”. His life turned around in the early 1970s. As a pre-med student at New York University, he worked with schizophrenic (患精神分裂症的) and autistic (患自闭症的) children in a hospital. The children received very little human contact, and their treatment consisted primarily of drug therapy.
It was when Jenkins was trying to connect with a depressed child named Eric that he discovered that by playing silly games he could make Eric smile and finally say Jenkins’s name.
“I won his trust with laughter,” Jenkins said. “I felt the only audience I was capable of acting the fool in front of were the autistic children, the only people that were more shy than me.”
Jenkins can speak French, Italian and Indonesian, but he said his secret to acceptance into foreign cultures is his ability to clown.
24.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Clowns use laughter to overcome barriers. B.Ron Jenkins came to clowning successfully.
C.Laughter can win everything. D.Ron Jenkins becomes a successful doctor.
25.The underlined word “encompassing” in paragraph 3 can be replaced by “________”.
A.circling B.except C.passing D.including
26.When did Ron Jenkins begin clowning
A.When he began to work at Wesleyan University.
B.After he had a doctorate from Harvard University.
C.After he engaged in medicine.
D.When he worked overseas.
27.What kind of person is Ron Jenkins according to the passage
A.Foolish and ignorant. B.Learned and brave.
C.Brave and serious. D.Funny and ignorant.
【答案】24.A 25.D 26.C 27.B

A new study in the journal Scientific Reports finds AI chatbots can imitate famous poets so effectively that they can fool many human readers, and non-experts often can’t reliably distinguish between poems written by William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot or ChatGPT-3.5.
The researchers conducted two experiments: the first asked participants to determine whether a poem was written by a human or AI, and the second assessed the quality of the poems. In both cases, the AI-generated poems either passed as human-written or even outperformed those by human writers. Participants, who were unaware of the true origins of the poems, rated the AI-generated poems higher on average, considering them more inspiring, meaningful, moving, and profound than the human-authored ones.
So, how did this happen Researchers believe the appeal of AI-generated poems lies in their simplicity and clarity. These poems better convey an image, mood, emotion, or theme to non-expert poetry readers. Consequently, participants might have misunderstood the complexity of human poetry as AI incoherence Understanding human-authored poetry also requires deep and critical thinking. However, modern readers seem unwilling to engage in this kind of mental labor, preferring texts that offer “instant answers,” writes Andrew Dean, a literary scholar at Deakin University in Australia.
Michele Elam, a senior fellow at Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, raised a key concern about how AI may shape people’s relationships with art. She argued that the issue isn’t whether AI-generated poetry can match or exceed human authenticity (真实性) but that we might lose sight of how art is connected to our lived experiences. “Literature, including poetry, is meaningful because it provides a way of naming and describing our realities,” Elam wrote in an email, “If we only see selected images and language in our social feeds, it could limit our ability to understand the world, remember the past, and imagine the future.”
28.What can we learn from the two experiments
A.Human poems are more creative than AI-generated poems.
B.Many participants can distinguish AI-generated poems quickly.
C.Only a small number of participants preferred AI-generated poems.
D.AI-generated poems won higher praise than human poems on average.
29.Which of the following is a characteristic of AI-generated poems according to the passage
A.They are full of complex language.
B.They are simple and clear in expression.
C.They are hard to understand for non-experts.
D.They demand a lot of critical thinking from readers.
30.The misunderstanding of human-authored poetry as AI-incoherence by participants may be due to ________.
A.The inherent defects in human-authored poetry.
B.The poor quality of the language used in human-authored poetry.
C.The lack of proper education on appreciating poetry among participants.
D.The participants’ habit of expecting simplicity, as AI-generated poems provided.
31.Which statement will Michele Elam probably agree with
A.AI is revolutionizing the way we appreciate literary works.
B.AI-generated literature has challenged human writers’ abilities.
C.AI-generated art helps enhance our understanding of the world.
D.AI may lead to a disconnection between art and human experiences.
根据第二段最后一句“Participants, who were unaware of the true origins of the poems, rated the AI-generated poems higher on average, considering them more inspiring, meaningful, moving, and profound than the human-authored ones. (参与者并不知道这些诗歌的真正来源,他们对人工智能生成的诗歌的平均评分更高,认为它们比人类创作的诗歌更具启发性、更有意义、更动人、更深刻。)”从实验结果可知,人工智能生成的诗歌平均获得了比人类诗歌更高的评价。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段第二句“Researchers believe the appeal of AI-generated poems lies in their simplicity and clarity. (研究人员认为,人工智能生成的诗歌的吸引力在于其简洁明了。)”可知,人工智能生成的诗歌的特点是表达简洁明了。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Consequently, participants might have misunderstood the complexity of human poetry as AI incoherence (不连贯性). Understanding human-authored poetry also requires deep and critical thinking. However, modern readers seem unwilling to engage in this kind of mental labor, preferring texts that offer “instant answers,” writes Andrew Dean, a literary scholar at Deakin University in Australia.
根据第四段第二句“She argued that the issue isn’t whether AI-generated poetry can match or exceed human authenticity but that we might lose sight of how art is connected to our lived experiences. (她认为,问题不在于人工智能生成的诗歌是否能达到或超越人类的真实性,而在于我们可能会忽视艺术与我们生活体验之间的联系。)”可知,Michele Elam认为人工智能可能会导致艺术与人类体验之间的脱节。故选D。

When it comes to poverty relief efforts in the developing world, small is the new big. Consider Juncao, a group of wild grasses that have become one of China’s most significant contributions to the world’s sustainable development, with multiple uses being shared by people in 105 countries to help tackle food issues and desertification (沙漠化).
Juncao, which literally means “the herbal plant for growing edible mushrooms”, has worked miracles for Chinese scientists who are cultivating it as a substrate (培养基) for growing edible and medicinal mushrooms or as food for livestock, as well as using it as green barrier to stop sand hills from advancing.
China introduced the grass and its cultivation technology to Papua New Guinea more than 20 years ago to help local farmers raise livestock and grow edible mushrooms. “We hope we will help double the agricultural production capacity and farmers’ incomes in Papua New Guinea. We offer training at home and abroad, send our experts to teach local farmers, and we do serve them heart and soul as our brothers,” said Lin Zhanxi, a 79-year-old professor in Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University and the chief scientist for grass development.
It’s been 35 years since Lin selected the grass species to replace wood as a substrate for growing mushrooms in East China’s Fujian Province, and this has saved a vast coverage of natural forest there. Through the years, Lin has developed 45 varieties of Juncao, which can be used to cultivate 55 mushroom species.
Despite his age, Lin has often traveled afar to help people in developing countries learn about the benefits of this agricultural technology. “The first time I went to Papua New Guinea in 1997, I realized how people there were struggling with extreme poverty,” Lin said. At that time, a tribe chief knelt down before Lin to thank him for bringing the technique to save them from starvation. To his astonishment, the tribe people celebrated the whole night. Members of the team were so touched that they decided to stay and help the people shake off poverty. In a land without electricity or modern devices, the team members worked there for eight years to teach locals how to cultivate and use the grass.
32.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2
A.When Juncao is discovered. B.What Juncao looks like.
C.What Juncao is applied to. D.How Juncao evolves.
33.Why Juncao is introduced to Papua New Guinea
A.To relief its poverty. B.To develop new varieties.
C.To tackle the issue of drought. D.To promote corn-growing technology.
34.How did people in Fujian grow mushrooms before Lin brought Juncao there
A.By adding more fertilizer. B.By using the wood as a substrate.
C.By covering mushrooms with leaves. D.By taking chopped-up wild grass as a substrate.
35.Which of the following words can best describe Lin Zhanxi
A.Honest and strict. B.Generous and humorous.
C.Confident and independent. D.Devoted and helpful.
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.B 35.D
根据第二段“Juncao, which literally means “the herbal plant for growing edible mushrooms”, has worked miracles for Chinese scientists who are cultivating it as a substrate (培养基) for growing edible and medicinal mushrooms or as food for livestock, as well as using it as green barrier to stop sand hills from advancing.(菌草,字面意思是“种植食用菌的草本植物”,为中国科学家创造了奇迹,他们将其作为种植食用菌和药用蘑菇的基质或牲畜的食物,并将其用作阻止沙丘前进的绿色屏障)”可知,第二段主要讲述了菌草的用途。故选C。
根据第三段“We hope we will help double the agricultural production capacity and farmers’ incomes in Papua New Guinea.(我们希望我们能帮助巴布亚新几内亚将农业生产能力和农民收入提高一倍)”可知,引进菌草主要目的是缓解农民的贫困。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“It’s been 35 years since Lin selected the grass species to replace wood as a substrate for growing mushrooms in East China’s Fujian Province, and this has saved a vast coverage of natural forest there.(35年前,林在中国东部的福建省选择了草种来代替木材作为种植蘑菇的基质,这挽救了那里大片的天然林)”可知,在福建,曾经的农民是用木材作为种植蘑菇的基材的。故选B。
We hope we will help double the agricultural production capacity and farmers’ incomes in Papua New Guinea. Why People May Stare at You
You may have experienced the situation where someone staring at you, such as when you’re quietly seated on a bus, only to find that the person across from you is looking at your feet. Did you put on two different shoes No, you check your shoes — both are the same. 36
A new study by Hannah Scott and colleagues from the University of London suggested that people stare because faces, especially the eyes, provide many useful non-verbal clues about a person’s mental state. 37 Observing what others look at offers a glimpse into their thoughts.
38 The study also found that people may focus on others’ lips during talks. If you feel someone’s gaze on your mouth while speaking, it’s likely not an indication of romantic interest, but rather that they might not hear you well. Similarly, people may look at your hands when you gesture. As they may be trying to understand your actions when you are talking or performing a task.
The study showed that people tend to direct their gaze at the part of the body that provides the most information. 39 They get the audience to focus on their faces while performing hand tricks. This technique helps switch attention from their hands during card tricks or coin magic.
Scott’s study concluded that people are not naturally biased to focus on someone’s face. Instead, they are drawn to the body parts that provide the most relevant information. 40 But when someone is performing a manual task, it’s the hands that draw the gaze. This also explains why magicians often talk to engage their audience’s attention on their faces while performing tricks with their hands.
A.So, what causes such stares
B.But it’s not just eyes that draw stares.
C.The eyes, contain socially relevant information.
D.This explains how magicians apply misdirection.
E.If someone is speaking, the eyes attract attention.
F.Sometimes, such intense stares can make us feel uneasy.
G.The way people talk can also attract stares during conversations.
【答案】36.A 37.C 38.B 39.D 40.E
36.根据上文“You may have experienced the situation where someone staring at you, such as when you’re quietly seated on a bus, only to find that the person across from you is looking at your feet. Did you put on two different shoes No, you check your shoes — both are the same.(你可能经历过有人盯着你看的情况,比如当你安静地坐在公共汽车上时,却发现对面的人在看你的脚。你穿了两只不同的鞋吗?不,你检查你的鞋子——两者是一样的)”结合下文解释凝视的原因可知,本句为过渡句,引出后文人们喜欢凝视的原因。故A选项“那么,是什么导致了这样的凝视呢?”符合语境,故选A。
37.根据上文“A new study by Hannah Scott and colleagues from the University of London suggested that people stare because faces, especially the eyes, provide many useful non-verbal clues about a person’s mental state.(伦敦大学的汉娜·斯科特及其同事的一项新研究表明,人们之所以盯着别人看,是因为脸,尤其是眼睛,提供了许多关于一个人精神状态的有用的非语言线索)”可知,上文提到人脸提供了一些精神状态的线索,且强调了眼睛包含信息更多,故C选项“眼睛包含与社交相关的信息”符合语境,故选C。
38.根据后文“The study also found that people may focus on others’ lips during talks. If you feel someone’s gaze on your mouth while speaking, it’s likely not an indication of romantic interest, but rather that they might not hear you well. Similarly, people may look at your hands when you gesture. As they may be trying to understand your actions when you are talking or performing a task.(研究还发现,人们在谈话时可能会关注他人的嘴唇。如果你在说话的时候感觉到有人盯着你的嘴看,这很可能不是对你有好感,而是他们可能听不清你说的话。同样,当你做手势时,人们可能会看着你的手。因为当你说话或执行任务时,他们可能会试图理解你的行为)”可知,后文提到对话的时候人们会关注他人的嘴唇,即不只关注眼睛。故B选项“但吸引目光的不只是眼睛”符合语境,故选B。
39.根据上文“The study showed that people tend to direct their gaze at the part of the body that provides the most information.(研究表明,人们倾向于把目光投向提供最多信息的身体部位)”以及后文“They get the audience to focus on their faces while performing hand tricks. This technique helps switch attention from their hands during card tricks or coin magic.(他们在表演手技时让观众把注意力集中在他们的脸上。这项技术有助于在玩纸牌或硬币魔术时将注意力从他们的手上转移开)”可知,后文提到了表演魔术,推测是用魔术师进行举例说明。故D选项“这就解释了魔术师是如何误导别人的”符合语境,故选D。
40.根据上文“Scott’s study concluded that people are not naturally biased to focus on someone’s face. Instead, they are drawn to the body parts that provide the most relevant information.(斯科特的研究得出的结论是,人们不会自然地偏向于关注别人的脸。相反,它们会被吸引到提供最相关信息的身体部位)”可知,本句承接上文,具体说明被吸引到关注的身体部位是什么。故E选项“如果有人在说话,眼睛会吸引注意力”符合语境,故选E。

It was another competition day.
A tall official was checking all the athletes. “Number Three. John Fisher.” John nodded while a ripple of goosebumps (一阵鸡皮疙瘩) shot up his backbone. He should be calm as he had trained pretty hard for the race. However, he had a headache and a sense of imbalance from his poor sleep the night before, Scenes of the last competition filled his head, when he had put in a good effort, doing what he thought was enough only to see another man beat him. The bitter taste of loss spread slowly in his mouth even now.
Suddenly, John felt a “man” in black standing beside him, who looked quite familiar. He looked at John and sneered (讥笑), “Hey. You are not good enough. You’re going to fail like in the last competition!” How dare he say that John angrily punched (拳打) him, who, however, disappeared into thin air. John remembered the early mornings when he was the first to arrive at the training ground, pushing himself through one more set of exercises each time. Determined not to let this negative voice affect him, he took a deep breath and looked ahead.
“Now, everyone, follow me,” the official said and led the group into the arena (运动场). John looked over at the other competitors, each dressed in a similar uniform, well-trained and prepared. John knew he had a tough race ahead of him. The “man” appeared and sneered again “Good luck. You’re going to need it!”
Ignoring the “man” and the competitors, John placed his fingers against the starting line and put his body in position. “What should I do first ” he wondered, All the strategies he had planned the night before were gone. He could feel the eye of the crowd on him and he wasn’t ready.
Paragraph 1:

Paragraph 2:

Paragraph 1:
Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped. He quickly regained his balance, his heart pounding in his chest. The adrenaline surged through him, pushing him forward. He focused on the track ahead, blocking out the cheers and jeers of the crowd. His muscles worked in perfect harmony, each stride bringing him closer to the finish line. As he rounded the final bend, he saw the leaders just ahead. With a final burst of speed, he sprinted towards them, his lungs burning and his legs screaming in protest. But he didn’t let up, his determination propelling him forward. To his surprise, he crossed the finish line in second place, just inches behind the winner.
Paragraph 2:
The “man” in black appeared and congratulated him, too. “Well done, John,” he said, his tone no longer sneering but genuinely impressed. “You’ve come a long way. Remember, it’s not about winning every time, it’s about pushing yourself to be better, about facing your fears and rising above them.” John stared at the “man”, realizing he was a figment of his own doubts and insecurities. “Thanks,” he muttered, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. He turned to his coach and teammates, who were cheering him on. For the first time, he felt like he truly belonged. He knew he still had a lot to learn and many more races to run, but today, he had proven to himself that he could compete with the best. And that, he thought, was victory enough.

He could feel the eye of the crowd on him and he wasn’t ready.Paragraph 1:
Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped.
