The Mantis Catches the Snake
In ancient times, there was a hunter surnamed Zhang who went into the mountains to hunt. When he passed through a narrow valley, he seemed to hear an unusual sound coming from the cliffs on both sides. The sound was very rapid, like "crackle-crackle"—as if someone was whipping the leaves with a whip. Hunter Zhang was very curious. "Could someone be in danger " he wondered to himself. Driven by this curiosity, he climbed up the cliff and walked through the dense jungle toward the sound, eager to find out what was happening.
The sound grew louder as he got closer to its source. Finally, when he reached the spot, he saw clearly what was going on: a tiny mantis was fighting a huge snake! The snake was two meters long and as thick as a rice bowl. Its body was a mix of black and red, and it kept sticking out its long forked tongue with a "hiss-hiss" sound—it looked extremely fierce. The small mantis was standing on the snake’s head, using its pair of scythe-like sharp front legs to cling tightly to the snake’s head and refusing to let go.
"How can such a small mantis fight a big snake like this " Hunter Zhang couldn’t help thinking. Suddenly, he became very interested in the outcome of the fight. He moved a little closer and hid behind a big tree to watch carefully.
The fight between the mantis and the snake went on for a long time without a result. The small mantis clung tightly to the snake’s head and didn’t use any other attack methods. As for the snake, it seemed to look down on the small mantis. It swung its long body hard in the jungle, and its tail hit the branches and leaves around it, making a clear "crackle" sound. Soon, branches broke and leaves were crushed. The snake rolled and thrashed repeatedly, trying to shake off the mantis on its head with its great strength.
Several times, the mantis almost fell off due to the snake’s movements, but it never let go. It still held the snake’s head tightly with its strong front legs—there was no sign of loosening. As time passed, its sharp front legs even dug deeply into the snake’s head. The snake kept thrashing around and changing its swinging poses, but no matter how hard it struggled, it couldn’t get rid of the mantis’s grip.
Slowly, the snake seemed to be worn out. It moved more and more slowly and no longer stuck out its tongue fiercely. No one knew how much time had passed—finally, the snake lay on the ground and didn’t move at all. The small mantis had actually defeated the big snake!
Hunter Zhang couldn’t believe his eyes. While he was still staring in shock, the small mantis let out a few cheerful chirps, then jumped tiredly but happily into the grass and disappeared. The hunter walked up to the dead snake and looked closely—only then did he see that the skin and flesh on the snake’s head had all split open.
"The small mantis focused on the snake’s weak spot and never gave up, no matter how hard it was. That’s why it finally won!" Hunter Zhang looked at the dead snake, thought carefully, and finally understood.
Moral
It seems unbelievable that a tiny mantis could defeat a fierce big snake, but in fact, it makes perfect sense. That’s because the mantis found the snake’s fatal weakness and never gave up. This shows that as long as we are good at using our strengths, focus on the opponent’s key weaknesses, and persist with determination, we can defeat stronger rivals with our own weakness—and create miracles that seem impossible.
