The Two Brothers Quarreling Over a Wild Goose
In ancient times, two brothers were practicing archery on the grassland. Suddenly, a big wild goose flew across the sky. It flew very low—they could easily shoot it down with a bow and arrow. Both brothers saw it, and they不约而同 got ready to shoot: the arrows were on the bowstrings, just waiting to be released.
Suddenly, the elder brother asked the younger one: “If we shoot this wild goose down, how should we cook it ” Before the younger brother could answer, the elder brother decided: “Boiling it should make it taste delicious!” He was about to pull the bowstring to shoot.
The younger brother quickly stepped forward to stop him and said: “Geese are better when boiled, but I think wild geese should be roasted.” The elder brother disagreed and still insisted on boiling it. The younger brother refused to give in either. Each stuck to his own opinion, and they argued endlessly.
In the end, they couldn’t settle the argument, so they went to a man named She Bo to judge. She Bo was highly respected and had great prestige in the local area—many people went to him to mediate their disputes. After hearing why the two brothers were quarreling over the wild goose, She Bo couldn’t help laughing and said: “This is easy! You shoot the wild goose down first, then boil half of it and roast the other half. That way, both of you are happy!”
The two brothers suddenly realized what they should do. They turned back, ready to pull their bows to find the wild goose—but the wild goose had already flown away without a trace.
Moral
Before even starting to do something, they argued over unrealistic issues. In the end, they only missed the good opportunity. This story tells us that meaningless empty talk is very harmful and a waste of time. What we should advocate is to make quick decisions and do practical things.
