Changing from Three in the Morning to Four in the Evening
In ancient times, there was a man in the State of Song who raised monkeys. He kept many monkeys at home and loved them to the point of obsession. He would rather go without food or drink himself than let his monkeys go hungry. The monkeys made him very happy, and he also understood the monkeys’ wishes well.
As time passed, there were more and more monkeys, and his family became poorer and poorer. Every day, his family had to cut down on their own food rations. He had no choice but to reduce the monkeys’ chestnut rations too.
The monkey keeper knew the monkeys were very smart. He was afraid that if he cut the rations too obviously, the monkeys would refuse to obey. So he discussed it with the monkeys: “From now on, I will give you chestnuts—three in the morning and four in the evening. Is that okay ” When the monkeys heard this, they jumped up and down, shouting and making a fuss in anger.
The monkey keeper was at a loss for a moment and almost panicked. After calming down a little, he changed his words: “From now on, I will give you chestnuts—four in the morning and three in the evening. Will that be better ” Strangely enough, when the monkeys heard this, they stopped making noise. They lay down happily.
Moral
It was still seven chestnuts a day in total. But in the monkeys’ eyes, “three in the morning and four in the evening” was very different from “four in the morning and three in the evening.” They were only fooled by the form of the thing—there was no real difference in essence. This fable tells us that when looking at a problem, we must not be fooled by its surface appearance or different forms. Instead, we should see the essence of the thing clearly.
