Xue Tan Learns to Sing
Once upon a time, there was a young man named Xue Tan who wanted to learn to sing. He found Qin Qing, the most famous singer in the State of Qin at that time, and asked to be his student. Qin Qing saw that Xue Tan was passionate and talented, so he liked this student very much and wanted to teach him all his singing skills.
However, Xue Tan was a very impatient person. He was proud and conceited—after only learning a simple song, he felt very satisfied. He thought he had mastered almost all of Qin Qing’s skills, so he wanted to say goodbye to his teacher and go home.
Qin Qing was very disappointed in him and deeply felt sorry for him. But no matter how hard he tried to keep Xue Tan, he couldn’t. Helplessly, Qin Qing had to go to the main road outside the city to see Xue Tan off.
It was spring then—flowers were blooming and the weather was warm. The river had just become warm, and ducks played freely on the water. Spring flowers were in full bloom, and the air was filled with a strong fragrance. Trees were lush and green, showing vigorous vitality. Qin Qing was deeply intoxicated by the scene. He couldn’t help but beat time and sing loudly.
His singing was sometimes gentle and beautiful, mixing with the songs of the birds in the forest; sometimes it was melodious and high-pitched, floating up into the clouds like the sound of heaven. The beautiful singing touched the trees in the forest, and even the clouds floating in the sky seemed to stop moving. Xue Tan had never heard his teacher sing before—he was unconsciously attracted by this wonderful sound, and he was almost drunk with it.
After the song ended, it took Xue Tan a long time to come back to his senses. He deeply realized the gap between himself and his teacher. He immediately asked Qin Qing for forgiveness and begged to go back to continue his studies. Of course, Qin Qing was happy. So the teacher and the student went home happily.
From then on, Xue Tan never gave up. He studied singing diligently and finally became a famous singer too.
Moral
Knowledge is boundless—there is always more to learn, and you will never finish learning all there is. Xue Tan only tasted a little of singing, became proud, and wanted to give up halfway. That way, he could never learn real skills. Only by being modest and cautious, and striving without being satisfied, can we gain something in our studies.

Qin Qing was disappointed but had to see him off[4]. On the way, Qin Qing sang loudly—his voice was sometimes gentle, sometimes high-pitched[5].
