Suspecting the Neighbor of Stealing the Axe
Once upon a time, a man lost an axe at home. He was very worried and looked for it everywhere, but he couldn’t find it. Suddenly, he remembered that his neighbor had come to his house just before. So he suspected that the neighbor had stolen his axe when leaving. Since he didn’t see it with his own eyes, he didn’t feel right to ask the neighbor directly. Instead, he secretly started to watch the neighbor’s every move carefully.
One day, the neighbor went out. He walked out of his house, and his way of walking was no different from usual—he even greeted the man naturally. But in the eyes of the man who lost the axe, he thought the neighbor looked sneaky. When he looked at the neighbor’s expression, he found it strange and unnatural. When he listened to the neighbor’s words, he thought they were far-fetched and hesitant. In short, in his mind, every word and action of the neighbor seemed to show that he had stolen the axe. He had made up his mind to ask the neighbor clearly when he came back.
Later, he went to tidy up his backyard. When he was digging the ground, he unexpectedly dug out his axe. He was very happy, and for a moment, he completely forgot about suspecting the neighbor. When the neighbor came home and passed by his door again, he greeted him casually as before. This time, when the man looked at the neighbor, everything seemed normal.
Moral
It is obviously wrong to make a subjective judgment that the neighbor stole the axe without any solid evidence. This fable tells us that for anything, before we have a clear and practical investigation, we must not make a decision based on preconceived subjective biases. This attitude must be firmly abandoned, as it is very harmful to both ourselves and others.

Once upon a time, a man lost an axe at home and looked for it everywhere[1]. He suspected his neighbor of stealing it[2] but didn’t feel right to ask directly[3], so he secretly watched the neighbor’s every move[4].
When the neighbor went out, his way of walking was no different from usual[5], but the man thought he looked sneaky. Later, the man tidied up his backyard and unexpectedly dug out the axe[6]. For a moment, he completely forgot about suspecting the neighbor[7]. When the neighbor passed by again, he greeted him casually as before[8].
This fable tells us: We must not make a subjective judgment without solid evidence[9]. Instead, we need a clear investigation—otherwise, the attitude of preconceived bias will be harmful to both ourselves and others[10].
