The Mice of Yongzhou
In ancient times, there was a man in Yongzhou who was very superstitious. He had many taboos in life—he was always afraid of doing something wrong and making his life "unlucky". Among all his taboos, the most notable one was his family’s attitude toward mice.
This man was born in the Year of the Rat (according to the Chinese zodiac). Since the rat was the "sacred animal" of his birth year, he cherished mice very much. Not only did he treat mice well himself, but he also asked everyone in his family to be kind to and respect mice just like him. He forbade keeping cats at home (for cats would threaten mice) and also stopped his servants from chasing, beating, or scolding mice.
Mice could come and go freely in his house—they had no restrictions, not only in the main hall and warehouse, but even in the bedrooms and kitchen. His home had simply become a paradise for mice.
As time passed, the mice told each other about this place. Soon, mice from all around learned about this "paradise" and flocked to his house in groups. They ate and drank to their hearts’ content, ran amok without fear, and enjoyed all the freedom and happiness in this family’s home. They ate the grain in the warehouse recklessly,钻 into the wardrobes without hesitation to chew up the clothes, and even tasted the freshly cooked meals first.
What’s more, no part of the house was spared—the doors, windows, beams, and pillars were all covered with mice’s tooth marks and traces of their chewing. But because he insisted on "respecting" mice, the man never allowed his family to harm them, even though the house was made a mess and filled with chaos.
Perhaps the mice had never met such a man before—they became even more arrogant. They caused trouble not only during the day, but also at night: after the family fell asleep, they deliberately played and fought, chewed on things, squeaked, and made all kinds of harsh and strange noises. They disturbed the family so much that they couldn’t sleep peacefully.
In the end, the family could stand it no longer. On the condition of not harming the mice, they discussed and decided to move away to escape them.
After they moved out, another family moved in. But the mice still lived their comfortable and free life as before. The new owner saw this and said angrily: "These dirty things that fear the sun—how did they get so bold to steal and make trouble like this "
He made a quick decision at once: he found five or six cats, closed the main door, removed some tiles from the house, poured water into the mice holes, and even hired some people to search and chase the mice together with his family.
In the end, the dead mice piled up like small hills. The "dream of a paradise life" for these hateful mice finally came to an end.
Moral
The story warns us that we must never indulge or tolerate bad people—otherwise, they will become even more reckless. On the other hand, even if evildoers can find a "protector" for a while, this protection will never last long, and they will eventually come to a bad end. In our daily lives, we should keep our eyes open to tell right from wrong, never indulge evil to grow, and wisely punish evil and promote good.
