Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own.My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up,we lived a very hard life.We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life,“Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen,I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again.Every day,my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said,I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her.A year later,I returned to school—walking on my own!
When the Great Depression(大萧条)hit,my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us.At that moment,I was determined never to be poor again.
Over the years,I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951.I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family.I told my wife that I was going to open a motel(汽车旅馆)for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business,we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul,I never doubted we would succeed.Fifteen years later,we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn.In 1979 my company had 1759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situations. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

A. Modest,helpful and hard-working.
B. Loving,supportive and strong-willed.
C. Careful,helpful and beautiful.
D. Strict,sensitive and supportive.
60. Which of the following led to Kemmons’ success according to the passage

Should we focus on our goal, or on the process
What happened to Brenda Martinez, a US Olympic runner, may provide us with the answer. She lost her balance in the 800m race and failed to qualify for the Olympics. Focusing on everything that would give her another chance, she quickly let go of what happened in the 800m race and got back to her routine. A week later, she won the third place in the 1500m race to qualify for the Olympics in Rio. Instead of attaching herself to the goal of making the Olympic team, she concentrated on the process.
Generally, overemphasizing goals based on ultimate outcomes often leads to risk-taking, unethical (不道德的) behavior and reduced motivation. We see this happen in the real world all the time: someone becomes driven by the external rewards and recognition that he hopes accomplishing his goal will bring, and, in the worst case, he’ll go to any extreme to achieve it such as taking harmful diet pills to lose weight or using banned drugs in a competition. These are all predictable side effects of overemphasizing goals.
Another danger of only focusing on goals is giving up all the merits (优点) after completing them. For example, some marathon runners experience what’s called the “post-race blues”. Achieving their goal may cause them to drop the good habits that got them there. Dieters often experience this in what’s called “yo-yo dieting” — gaining all the weight back while resuming their bad habits after they drop down to a desired weight.
However, focusing on the process will help you to achieve little victories on your way to achieving long-term goals and leave you with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, regardless of the ultimate outcome. It means breaking down a goal into little parts and concentrating on those parts. For Martinez, this meant not worrying about her bad luck in the 800m race, but rather ensuring she got in the right nutrition, sleep and workouts to give herself the best chance to run a good race in the 1500m race.
Therefore, after you set a goal, it’s best to shift your focus from the goal itself to the process that gives you the best chance of achieving the goal, and to judge yourself based on how well you do in the process.
61. With a question at the beginning of the passage, the author intends to ______.
A. enhance the persuasion B. persuade readers to accept his views
C. provide convincing evidence D. inspire readers to reflect on the topic
62. Brenda Martinez’s example shows that ______.
A. it is important to set big goals
B. failure is the mother of success
C. focusing on the process can lead to success
D. opportunity favors the prepared mind
63. What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3 and 4
A. Giving too much attention to goals can bring about harmful effects.
B. Post-race blues is sure to happen after a marathon race.
C. In order to achieve the goals people can adopt aggressive behavior.
D. It is normal to feel down after achieving the goal.
64. According to the author, what benefits can we obtain by focusing on the process
A. Avoiding failure during the process.
B. Gaining a sense of satisfaction by achieving small targets.
C. Reducing some unpredictable risk.
D. Ensuring enough sleep and good mood.
65. In the passage, the author suggests that we should ______.
A. move forward without motivation
B. ignore the bad effects of overemphasizing goals
C. concentrate on our goals rather than the process
D. divide a big goal into smaller pieces and concentrate on process
D
The temperature is sharply rising with each passing day. People, including many experts, find it difficult to slow down the process. However, leaving coal and major fossil fuels in the ground could help to limit climate change in the future, according to a new study. That is to say, a third of oil reserves on the earth, half of gas reserves and over 80 percent of current coal reserves should not be used before the year 2050. If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future, we ought to carry some measures to severely control the emissions from factories vehicles and even our daily-life cooking. However, it is a goal that seems to be impossible in our eyes.
“Policy makers in different countries must realize that their attempt to completely use the fossil fuels within their countries is wholly incompatible(矛盾的) with their hope to reach the 2-degree goal,” Dr. Christophe Mc Glade at University College London’s Energy Institute said in a statement. “If they go ahead with developing their own resources,” he added, “they must be asked which reserves elsewhere should remain unburnt in order for the carbon budget not to go beyond the limit.”
It’s not surprising to see how tapping into these unused reserves would be attractive. Energy-related industry is a big business all over the world. There are many coal reserves in China, Russia and the United States, along with over 260 thousand million barrels of oil reserves in the Middle East. Not to mention that oil is currently being developed in the Arctic. Companies spent over $670 billion last year in the expansion of fossil fuels, but according to the new model used in this latest study, developers may need to rethink their plans to develop these underground resources so as to make some contributions to control the world temperature from rising high in the future.
“We’ve now got practical figures of the quantities and locations of fossil fuels that should remain unused in trying to keep within the 2-degree temperature limit,” added Mc Glade. World leaders and policy makers should take the advice to heart, because a recent IPCC report warned that if immediate and great actions are not taken soon, climate change will cause irreversible(不可逆转的) impacts on environments worldwide, leaving the world an unsafe place for us to live in.
66. According to Paragraph 1, our goal is to .
A. discover more fossil fuels
B. slow down the climate change
C. refuse to use reserves on the earth
D. keep the temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius
67. The underlined word “emissions” in Paragraph 1 refers to .
A. things that are sent out into the air
B. products that are made from fossil fuels
C. factors that cause the climate change
D. changes that happen after temperature rise
68. According to what Mc Glade said in Paragraph 2, all countries should .
A. make full use of their fossil fuels
B. work together towards the 2-degree goal
C. find better ways to dig out the coal
D. care about the global carbon budget
69. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that great efforts have been made in .
A. digging out the oil in the Middle East
B. getting people to rethink their fuel plans
C. developing fossil fuels around the world
D. developing energy-related industry worldwide
70. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of temperature control
A. Confident. B. Negative. C. Satisfied. D. Unclear.

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I started drawing houses at six. Unlike most girls, my dream was to build a backyard clubhouse — a dream that was unrealistic given that we lived in an apartment. By high school I continued drawing and my dreams broadened — to become an architect. My older brother told me to try a university education. But my family couldn’t afford that kind of education. Still. I fanned the flame of hope.
I got a part-time job at Bayside Bowl (保龄球) and started saving money. My bank account, however, was growing quite slowly. I decided to shrink my dreams to a more realistic size.
Soon after that, a newcomer started frequenting Bayside Bowl. She arrived alone, and always carried a bag with a ball inside. Her dark skin and gray hair made her stand out among our younger customers. She talked to me whenever I cleaned near her lane (赛道). I learned her name was Bessie. She had been a singer for as long as she could remember. In her 20s she had tried to get a job as a restaurant singer. “I was a young black woman, and in the early 1950s doors didn’t exactly open wide for me. Zilch!” she said.
I especially appreciated her advice. “Life’s like bowling.” she would say. “Set your eyes on your target and follow through.” Indeed, Bessie hadn’t let the “zilches” stop her. She had signed up for the Brightwood Music Academy. It turned out this lady was the Bessie Richards, a recording artist of the 1950s.
Bessie moved on to live with her sister, but before leaving, she left me with a $50 tip for helping her at the lanes, a reminder to ignore the “zilches” in my life, and some lines of poetry she had copied from a book. Bessie said, “Read this when the going seems tough. It’ll help you follow through and reach for your goal.” These are the lines:
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
A year has passed since I last bowled with Bessie, and I’ve resumed my drawing. I’m working and saving money, taking drafting classes, and applying for internships (实习). Whenever I’m discouraged, I reread those lines of poetry.
There’ll be no barren field of frozen snow nor zilches for me. Inspired by Bessie and the poem, I plan to continue to dream.
71. What was the author’s dream when she was in high school (no more than 8 words)
72. Why did the author shrink her dream to a realistic size (no more than 10 words)
73. How do you understand the underlined sentence “Life is like bowling” (no more than 15 words)

作文
In recent years, short - video platforms have witnessed explosive growth, with millions of people, especially young students, spending hours scrolling through various short videos every day. Whether it's during breaks at school or leisure time at home, short videos have become an indispensable part of many people's lives.
Short videos bring both benefits and drawbacks. On the one hand, they serve as a convenient way to obtain information. People can learn about global news, acquire practical skills like cooking and painting, and even broaden their horizons through educational content in just a few minutes. Additionally, short videos provide a platform for creative individuals to showcase their talents, fostering cultural exchange and social connections. On the other hand, the over - reliance on short videos has negative effects. Some students get addicted to them, wasting a lot of precious study time and thus affecting their academic performance. Moreover, the quality of short videos is uneven; some contain vulgar or misleading content, which may have a bad impact on viewers' values.
From my perspective, short videos themselves are not good or bad; it all depends on how we use them. We should treat short videos rationally. When using them, we can focus on educational and meaningful content to make learning and entertainment coexist. Meanwhile, we must set a time limit for watching to avoid addiction. Let's make short videos a helpful tool in our life rather than a time - waster.
