In middle school, I was one of the “gifted” kids. For those three short years, I felt like I was on top of the world.
Then high school began. All of a sudden, I was no longer at the top of my class. My papers were filled with corrections, not praise.
My parents didn’t understand. From what they had known about me when I was younger, they thought that I was perfect, and so I had to be perfect all the time. Their concern grew — they began to search for private teachers and would often talk to me, trying to find out what was wrong with me. My concern grew too — the pressure to live up to their expectations only became greater. I found myself worrying about school all the time. I even questioned myself — who was I, if not the perfect student
Watching Simone Biles pull out of the Olympics made me think of myself. Simone Biles was the GOAT (greatest of all time). If there was any person we knew we could count on to win, it was Simone.
Unlike me, Simone recognized the pressure she was under. She had the bravery and self- reflective skills to be able to realize that the pressure of perfection was too much for her. Simone Biles has taught me a very important lesson: to be the greatest person of all time, mental health must come first. Instead of getting down on myself for not becoming the best, I need to learn from Simone and be kind to myself by taking a break or even asking for help if need be.
4. How did the author feel in high school
A. Bored and tired. B. Nervous and anxious. C. Confident and proud. D. Excited and surprised.

6. How did Simone Biles influence the author
A. She encouraged the author never to give up.
B. She taught the author useful self- reflective skills.
C. She showed the author the true meaning of perfection.
D. She made the author realize the value of mental health.
7. What is the best title for this text
A. Pressure: how much is too much
B. Simone Biles: the GOAT of the Olympics
C. Simone Biles, me, and the pressure of perfection
D. How do schools improve the mental health of students
C
A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from someone 's else or ourselves- -the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We 're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn't be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This“self-talk" helps us motivate (激励) ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order lo stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying“Good job!"
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking. we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving Is it needed If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal The choice is ours.
8. The main idea of the first paragraph is that
A. negative words may let us down
B. inspiring words give us confidence
C. words have a lasting effect on us
D. not sticks and stones but words will hurt us
9. There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because
A. we can benefit from talking to ourselves
B. talking to ourselves always gives us courage
C. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
D. it does no harm to have “self-talk" when we are alone
10. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely
A. remind ourselves
B. give ourselves amusement
C. make ourselves relaxed
D. praise ourselves
11. The author would probably hold the view that
A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B. it is better to think twice before talking to others
C. people tend to remember friendly words
D. negative words may inspire us to make more progress
D
Instead of using a credit card or smartphone to pay for your goods, Amazon wants you to use your hands. In a blog post. Dilip Kumar, vice president of Amazon Physical Retail introduced the company's' palm recognition(掌纹识别) technology, known as Amazon One. The technology, first rolling out in Amazon's home market of Seattle: will use people's palms to identify(确认身份) them and combine that with details of the palm, such as lines and ridges, to build “palm signature.”
In addition to the trial in the company's stores in Seattle, starting today, Kumar added that Amazon One will come to other Amazon stores and will be used for more than just paying with your palm. "We believe Amazon one has broad applicability beyond our retail stores, so we also plan to offer the service to third parties like retailers(零售店), stadiums, and office buildings so that more people can benefit from this ease and convenience in more places, "Kumar added.
Though Amazon has introduced other ways to pay for goods at its physical stores. including the use of Cameras and an app linked to your Amazon account. Kumar explained palm recognition offers another level of privacy.
"We selected palm recognition for a few important reasons, Kumar wrote. "One reason was that palm recognition is considered more private than other biometric (生物统计的) identifiers because you can't determine a person's identity by looking at a picture of their palm. It also requires users to make an intentional gesture by holding their palm over the device to use. This puts customers in control of when and where they use the service. What's more, it's contactless, which we think customers will appreciate, especially in current times.
To use Amazon One, people don't need an Amazon account, but simply phone number and a credit card. For those concerned about privacy, Kumar wrote, users can delete their biometric data if they decide they no longer want to use it.
12. Which of the following best describes Amazon One
A. Convenient and safe. B. Private and inexpensive.
C. Widespread and user-friendly D. Healthy and popular.
13. From the first three paragraphs we can infer that_______.
A. Amazon One is designed for Amazon online stores.
B. Amazons' palm recognition technology is the best in the world.
C Amazon One has not yet been used in places beyond Amazon stores.
D. Amazon provides various services for society.
14. What makes palm recognition a better way to pay than using a camera and an app.
A. Palm recognition makes fewer mistakes.
B. Customers don't need to make intentional gestures.
C. Customers can use their palm to open an Amazon account.
D. Customers can control when and where to use it.
15. Which section of a website is the passage most possibly from
A. Online shopping. B. Business news.
C. Education. D. Advertisement.

Our school’s “Help Others” event was drawing near, and our team had been assigned (分配) the task of organizing a fundraising campaign (筹款活动). We had a week to plan and carry out our strategy, and everyone wanted to play a meaningful part.
On the first day of our planning week, our team leader, Emily, brought us together to discuss our roles. She assigned different tasks to each team member based on our strengths and interests. I was assigned the role of connecting with local businesses for fundraising, a task I felt confident in completing.
As the week progressed we worked tirelessly.
One afternoon, while we were creating promotional (宣传的) materials, Jacob, one of our teammates, came to us with a tired look on his face. He explained that he had been feeling unwell for the past few days and was worried about falling behind on his tasks.
Worried about Jacob’s well-being, we encouraged him to take some time off and rest and told him that we would support him in any way we could. Jacob finally agreed, understanding that he needed to take care of himself.
With Jacob absent, we realized that his tasks, including creating promotional materials, were left unfinished. We knew that if we didn’t step in to help, our campaign would fail. To solve this problem, we came together as a team and thought of ways to support Jacob and keep our campaign on track.
Sarah, with her artistic skills, volunteered to take over the design of the promotional materials, while Mark offered to help with the content creation. Emily, our team leader, stepped in to manage the whole team, making sure that everything stayed organized and on schedule. We tried our best to make our campaign successful.

B. Amazons' palm recognition technology is the best in the world.
C Amazon One has not yet been used in places beyond Amazon stores.

14. What makes palm recognition a better way to pay than using a camera and an app.
A. Palm recognition makes fewer mistakes.
B. Customers don't need to make intentional gestures.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Late into the night, we came together in Sarah's living room. The room was filled with creativity and love, Sarah worked on the design, while Mark and I worked together to create interesting messages to attract our audience. As the hours passed, we shared stories, laughed, and supported each other through the creative work. The late–night tiredness was outweighed by the friendship we felt as a team, joined by our shared goals of making a difference and helping Jacob.
The following day, when Jacob returned to our team, he was surprised at the progress we had made in his absence. Jacob’s eyes welled up with emotion as he realized how much we had done for him. With renewed energy, we continued working together, putting the finishing touches on our campaign. On the day of the event, our team stood side by side, enjoying the fruits of our great efforts. The fundraising went beyond our expectations, allowing us to make a great difference to the cause we cared about deeply. Looking back on our journey, we realized that the strength of a team lies not only in individual ability but also in the readiness to support and help one another.
