Once upon a time, there was a farmer who was good at growing apples. One morning, while walking his dog, he noticed a bad apple sitting high up on his prized apple tree.
“If this bad apple spreads (传播、蔓延), the other apples on this tree will be ruined (毁坏),” he said to himself. “I must do something.”
He got a long stick, but it wasn’t long enough. When he tried to reach the bad apple, he knocked a few good apples to the ground.
Next, he used a catapult (弹弓) to shoot it off, but he missed each time and knocked more good apples down.
Then, he tried shaking the tree to make the bad apple fall. But no matter how hard he shook, it stayed in place, and more good apples fell.
A few days later, the farmer decided to cut off the branch (树枝). But when he arrived at the tree, he realized something important. In all his efforts to remove the bad apple, he had caused all the other apples to fall and rot (腐烂).

Background The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently raised a serious alarm about an illness called chikungunya. It is spreading fast and could become a big problem worldwide.
What is Chikungunya Chikungunya is an illness spread by mosquitoes (蚊子). It does not spread from person to person. When an infected (被感染的) mosquito bites (咬) you, it can make you sick. Symptoms (症状) include:
★High fever (over 39°C) ★Headaches and tiredness ★A red rash on the skin ★Very bad joint pain (especially in hands and feet)
These problems can last for weeks or even months. Although most people get better, it can be very serious, especially for older people or those already sick.
How does it spread The mosquito spreading this illness most often is the tiger mosquito. It loves warm weather and water. Sadly, as our planet gets warmer, this mosquito is moving to new places. Right now, there are big outbreaks happening on islands in the Indian Ocean and in parts of Asia and Africa. Travelers can bring it to new areas, like Europe. (Click here for more information.)
How to protect yourself Chikungunya is challenging because its symptoms look similar to other illnesses, which makes it difficult for doctors to know for sure what you have. The best way to fight chikungunya is to stop mosquitoes from biting you. Here’s what you can do: ▲Use mosquito repellent on your skin and clothes. Choose products with DEET or picaridin. ▲Wear long shirts and trousers, especially in the morning and evening. Light-colored clothes help too! ▲Empty water from things like flower pots or old tires around your house every week, because mosquitoes like laying their eggs in standing water. ▲Use a mosquito net while sleeping if needed.

C. Mosquitoes like rainy days and water. D. It may spread wider as the world gets warmer.
34. Why should people empty water from flower pots weekly
A. To save water for mosquitoes. B. To stop mosquitoes from laying eggs.
C. To make the garden look tidy. D. To test if water is clean.
35. Where is this text most probably from
A. A news report on TV. B. A travel guide book. C. A health website. D. A health magazine.
C
Are you an “I” person or an “E” person People have talked about it a lot online recently. They are part of a popular personality test called MBTI.
Everyone’s result has four letters. “I” and “E” are the first letters. People are either “I”, meaning introverted (内向的), or “E”, for extroverted (外向的).
But sometimes introverted people can be extroverted, too. For example, an “I” person will go out with a group of introverted friends. The person may do things that a more “extroverted” person would do. For example, he or she may share their thoughts and feelings with others.
Don’t label yourself just for MBTI results. The personality test is just for fun. Everyone’s personality is different. Don’t let the test tell you who you are.
For example, you did the test and got your results. At the same time, you would be very curious (好奇的) about your friends’ MBTI results. You would get upset if their results didn’t match the way you see them.
Soon, you think everyone might have a “personality stamp (特征)”. For example, “P” people don’t like to make plans. On the other hand, “J” people are planners and list-makers.
Do we really need to be worried about the result In fact, the four letters don’t tell you everything about a person. And no one should live according to what the four letters tell you.
36. What is MBTI
A. A popular book. B. A popular personality test.
C. A popular English test. D. A popular Chinese book.
37. What can you learn from the text
A. Introverted people may not share their happiness with others.
B. We can label ourselves for MBTI results.
C. The main purpose of the personality test is just for fun.
D. We need to be worried about the result.
38. What does the underlined word “label” mean in the text
A. To mark. B. To help. C. To give. D. To put.
39. What will happen to someone if his friends’ MBTI results are different from the way he sees them
A. Being calm and cool. B. Being worried and upset.
C. Being curious and surprised. D. Being interested and happy.
40. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this article
A. To explain in detail how the MBTI test works.
B. To encourage people to find out their friends’ test results.
C. To introduce the differences between “I” and “E” people.
D. To remind readers not to be labeled by their MBTI results.

“One stirrup of red dust makes the imperial concubine smile; no one knows it’s lychees arriving.” This famous line from a Tang poem inspired (启发) Ma Boyong’s historical novel The Story of Lychees delivered to Chang’an. Set in the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Xuanzong wanted to please his favorite concubine, Yang Guifei, by having fresh lychees delivered (运送) from Lingnan (modern-day Guangdong) to Chang’an, the capital city. However, this seemingly simple wish became an almost impossible task: lychees go bad within three days, and the journey covered over 2,500 kilometers across wild mountains and rivers.
Li Shande, a low-ranking official (低级的官员) in Chang’an, was asked to complete this task before Yang Guifei’s birthday. Although the task was difficult, Li refused to give up. “Even if I fail,” he said, “I must know how far I am from the goal.” His determination (决心) reminds us of the spirit shown by today’s students working hard for the high school entrance examination or personal dreams.
Li Shande faced the challenge with wisdom and courage. He used scientific methods to keep lychees fresh for longer. After trying many times, he successfully delivered the lychees in 11 days. But his success came at a price. In order to satisfy the emperor’s demand, the common people experienced great pain. By speaking out against the unfairness, Li showed he was brave enough to do the right thing without thinking about himself.
Although set in the Tang Dynasty, this story reflects modern life. Li Shande faced housing and work problems. These are the same challenges that young people face today. His journey teaches us that true growth doesn’t only come from success but also from the determination to move forward in the face of difficulties.
41. What made delivering fresh lychees from Lingnan to Chang’an an almost impossible task
A. The high cost of delivering lychees.
B. The disagreement from local officials.
C. The long journey and short freshness time of lychees.
D. The shortage of preservation (保存) technology at that time.
42. What does Li Shande’s words “Even if I fail, I must know how far I am from the goal” show
A. His determination to try. B. His love for lychees.
C. His fear of failure. D. His admiration for the emperor.
43. How did Li Shande succeed in delivering the lychees
A. By traveling day and night without rest. B. By stealing perfect preservation methods.
C. By asking for help from powerful officials. D. By using scientific methods and continuous trials.
44. What did Li Shande do after successfully delivering the lychees
A He left his job and lived a peaceful life. B. He asked for a big prize from the emperor.
C. He continued to serve the emperor with all his heart. D. He spoke out against the harm to the common people.
45. What lesson can we learn from Li Shande’s journey
A. Success is the most important thing in life.
B. Serving the emperor brings much wealth and fame.
C. True growth comes from challenges and determination.
D. We should give up when facing difficult challenges.

My Favorite Traditional Festival—The Spring Festival
The Spring Festival is my favorite traditional festival. There’s a well-known legend behind it. Long ago, a monster named “Nian” would come out to harm people on New Year’s Eve. One day, an old man used red paper and firecrackers to scare it away. Since then, people have stuck red couplets and set off fireworks during the Spring Festival to drive away bad luck.
On New Year’s Eve, my family gets together. We have a big dinner with delicious dishes like dumplings. After dinner, we watch the CCTV Spring Festival Gala while chatting. At midnight, we set off fireworks, which light up the night sky. On New Year’s Day, we visit relatives and friends, giving and receiving red envelopes.
I love the Spring Festival because it brings my family closer. It’s a time full of joy, warmth, and hope for a new year.
