Though I am a female scientist, I have face blindness. I can see faces, but the individual details, such as the distance between the eyes or the shape of the nose, are fuzzy. As a result, recognizing faces — something so instant and unconscious for most — is a major challenge.
Over the years I developed my own ways of dealing with the problem. To distinguish people, I relied on cues — like the way a person walks and a habitual lunch spot. There were many embarrassing moments as I pursued my career. But overall, I was managing.
Then, I often worked at home. As interactions moved online, suddenly everyone became a stranger. For my peace of mind, I needed to get to the bottom of why I see the world so differently from most people. Through a combination of luck and privilege, I connected with a specialist who gave me an official diagnosis (诊断). Even though I had already essentially diagnosed myself, it was a relief to have a professional put a formal name to it.
More importantly, I realized I had to face reality. Now if I’m going to an event where I’m expected to know people, I send an e-mail explaining that if I ignore them, it won’t be intentional. I’ve found that people are less likely to be offended when they know beforehand.
But sometimes I feel like something out of a science-fiction plot. A recent presentation titled You Don’t Belong Here was intended to show how some environments can be exclusionary (排斥的) and what can be done to address that. As the presenters alternated between acting out scenes and commenting on them, I left feeling exactly as the title said. It would have been a great help if they had explained at the beginning that they were going to switch roles.
People with disabilities exist, and we need our co-workers to think broadly about accessibility and inclusion. Let’s create an environment where we all feel like we belong.
4. What is wrong with the author
A. She can’t tell faces apart. B. She can’t see faces instantly.
C. She lacks facial expressions. D. She always keeps a straight face.
5. What made the author decide to seek professional help
A Her wrong self-diagnosis. B. The rise in online interactions.
C. A specialist’s recommendation. D. The chance of a promotion.
6. Which is mentioned as the author’s way of handling face blindness
A. Sending others an e-mail ahead of time. B. Learning the style people like to wear.
C. Meeting more friends in regular places. D. Drawing co-workers’ faces in a notebook.
7. What can we infer from paragraph 5
A. The author is bad at getting along with others.
B. Science fiction is an inspiration for the author.
C. The author loses a sense of belonging in some environments.
D. Having face blindness makes the author stand out in public.
C
A head of hair can be powerful. In the hands of a skilled stylist, your hair can help you boost your self- confidence, express your unique personality and land a new job. However, in the hands of matter of Trust, an ecological non-profit organization that collects and recycles waste fibers, your hair might help save the environment.
For over 20 years, matter of Trust has been collecting hair and fur donations worldwide for the purpose of making “hair mats(垫子)” that can assist with oil spill clean-ups at sea. Typically, oil spills on land are cleaned up using plastic mats that are effective but environmentally problematic. After all, plastic is made from fossil fuels. Using it to clean up oil therefore requires drilling for even more oil. Hair and fur, on the other hand, are non-poisonous, renewable and able to take in liquids easily. Human hair, for example, can absorb about five times its weight in oil.
“It makes more sense to use a renewable natural resource to clean up oil spills than it does to drill for more oil to use to clean up, ” says Lisa Gautier, who established matter of Trust in1998 and designed the organization’s Clean Wave program in 2001 when an Ecuadorian oil tanker carrying 243, 000 gallons of diesel oil ran aground on San Cristobal Island. And the leaking fuel threatened sea creatures.
Eager to help with the disaster, Gautier teamed up with stylist Phillip McCrory, who tried to employ hair to absorb oil in 1989. Together, they designed mats made of human hair and animal fur which Matter of Trust continues to produce today in San Francisco, and at local centers in 17 different countries.
To date, the organization has produced over 40, 000 hair mats. The product has been shared to clean up not only serious oil spills but also non- emergencies like oil leaks from vehicles and machinery. However, hair mats can only be used once and aren’t very effective at absorbing oil from sand. Still, hair mats are a surprising tool in the fight for a cleaner planet.
8. How are the advantages of hair mats showed
A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By citing experts’ remarks. D. By presenting research results.
9. What made Lisa Gautier launch the Clean Wave program
A. An oil spill emergency. B. Her love for sea animals.
C. A hairstylist’s proposal. D. Globally growing oil spills.
10. What do we know about Matter of Trust
A. It is busy cleaning the land. B. It sells hair mats worldwide.
C. It is funded by the government. D. It has expanded into many countries.
11. What does the author want to say about hair mats from the last paragraph
A. They can work efficiently on beaches as well. B. They have been widely used in our daily life.
C. They are imperfect but meaningful products. D. They are mainly applied to the vehicle industry.
D
A new report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism raises concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) in news production, as the rise of AI tools for news production, coupled with existing struggles to engage audiences, presents a fresh challenge for newsrooms worldwide.
The report, based on a survey of nearly 100, 000 people across 47 countries, highlights audience anxieties surrounding AI-generated news content and notes this is particularly true for sensitive topics like politics.
News organizations are dealing with the rise of Generative AI, with tech giants like Google and startups developing tools that summarize information and potentially divert (转移) traffic from news websites. However, the report reveals a public distrust of AI-generated news, raising questions about its viability and impact on profits.
The report also looked at audience perceptions of AI-generated news. A significant part of respondents (调查对象) to the survey expressed discomfort with news primarily produced by AI. This feeling was particularly strong in the UK (63 percent) and the US (52 percent). The report finds that people were more accepting of AI being used behind the scenes to enhance journalistic efficiency.
Nic Newman senior research associate at the Reuters Institute and lead author of the Digital News Report, said, “It was surprising to see the level of suspicion. People broadly had fears about what might happen to content reliability and trust.”
The survey also reveals a continuing worry about online misinformation. Concerns rose by 3 percent compared to the previous year, with 59 percent of respondents expressing worry. This anxiety was particularly conspicuous in countries like South Africa(81 percent) and the US (72 percent).
The report also highlights the difficulties news organizations face in securing paying subscribers. Only 17 percent of respondents across 20 countries reported paying for online news, a figure stagnant (没有变化) for the past three years.
“The findings show that newsrooms need to build a direct relationship with their audiences while also strategically using the platforms to connect with people who are trickier to reach, like younger audiences,” Newman said. “We see that news influencers have a bigger role on the popular platforms.”
12. How is newsrooms’ current situation
A. Difficult. B. Shaming. C. Promising. D. Competitive.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Some disadvantages of AI editors. B. An analysis of the research results.
C. Possible application of AI in news. D. Respondents’ attitude to AI in news.
14. What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in paragraph 6 mean
A. Doubtful. B. Similar. C. Obvious. D. Limited.
15. What does Nic Newman advise newsrooms to do
A. Employ famous influencers to spread news by AI.
B. Encourage more younger people to make use of AI.
C. Distinguish accurately true news from disinformation.
D. Take advantage of popular platforms to attract audiences.

It was a Saturday morning when the restaurant owner John called me aside. “I need to go out to deal with something,” he said. “Can you take charge for a few hours ”
My heart skipped a beat. I’d worked here for just two weeks, but I was always under his watch. “Just me and the chef in the kitchen I… I’m not sure,” I stammered.
John said firmly, “You’ve been watching, learning, and helping with every detail — taking orders correctly, keeping tables clean and handling change. I’m sure you’re ready.”
“What if there are accidents ” I asked worriedly
“I’m sure you’ve learned the techniques from the past days,” John replied. Before he rushed out of the restaurant, he added, “Just trust yourself, find ways out and remember to smile.”
Taking a deep breath, I straightened my apron (围裙) and walked toward the front of the restaurant. The crowd was starting to walk in — families with kids, couples chatting over coffee, and a few diners buried in their newspapers. The chef gave me a quick nod from the kitchen. The first hour went smoothly. I took orders, refilled drinks, and helped customers make the payments.
Then a challenge came. A group of eight — clearly coming for a birthday party — walked in without a reservation. Our small restaurant was already nearly full — there was only a big table and two smaller tables. I led them to the big table by the window, but a lady shook her head and said, “This won’t do. We need space for the cake!”
I tried to calm myself down and think hard. Then it hit me. I quickly put two smaller tables together near the window, covering the mismatched edges with a spare tablecloth. “How’s this Plenty of room for your celebration,” I smiled, remembering John’s last words. The lady nodded instantly.

Dear David,
I am writing to share an exciting lecture titled “China’s Progress in Space” at the Science and Technology Museum in our city.
The lecture held last week was incredibly informative, covering various topics on China’s achievements in space exploration, from early satellites to lunar probes. One of the highlights was the vivid pictures of China’s contribution to global cooperation, for China is always pushing for collaboration to explore space. Personally, I found the lecture both enlightening and inspiring, which instituted pride in me.
Looking forward to your reply and hopefully, we can discuss this further.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Accidents continued to happen, but I tried my best to handle them. One customer knocked over his glass, splashing water across the floor. Without panicking, I grabbed a towel, quickly mopped it up, and handed him a fresh drink with a smile. “No worries at all — accidents happen!” I said. I noticed a look of admiration in his face. Another time, the kitchen mixed up an order. I apologized sincerely, had the chef remake it immediately, and even offered a free dessert to make up for the wait.
Just as I was handing a satisfied customer the bill, John walked in. He scanned the restaurant — tables full but orderly, guests chatting happily and no signs of chaos. Spotting me, he raised his eyebrows and smiled widely. Then he walked toward me, patted me on the shoulder and announced, “You’ve handled everything perfectly!” Relief washed over me, and pride quickly followed. At that time, I realized that maybe I was ready for more than I thought — I just needed to trust myself to figure things out, with a smile.
