We talked about the conflict between sleepy teenagers and early morning classes. Many people noted our website and Facebook page.
For example, Damla Ece in Turkey wrote: I agree with the idea of starting lessons later so teenagers can feel better in the morning. But sleeping more than seven hours can be a waste of time for students.
Tran in Vietnam disagreed: I think teenagers, on average, need eight to ten hours of sleep every day. It’s useless trying to force them to concentrate when they can’t concentrate.
Afshin Heydari from Tehran says schools should start early to avoid heavy traffic later in the morning. And Suze from Jordan wrote: When I was a teenager, I enjoyed taking my courses as early as possible. That way I could find a lot of time in the day to do my own activities. But Azra from Kyrgyzstan said the reason schools started early there was a lack of classrooms. Omid in Afghanistan calls teenagers the destiny makers of a society. So they must be more alert and active in order to be more successful.

I recently had an experience. I was a little too hard on one of my players. It turns out this is his first year playing baseball. He’s played other sports and is clearly athletic. He’s also very coachable. In fact, however, I got on him for not running out a ball he hit. Technically, I was right to correct the behaviour — we expect our players to run hard to first every time. However, the manner in which I corrected him wasn’t suitable for the player. This showed to me an insight (洞察力) about coaching youth sports: coaches should know their players and motivate (激发) them.
It is the coach’s responsibility to get to know their players and understand what motivates them. Children are not all motivated the same way. If the coach only has one motivational tool in their toolbox, e. g. the carrot-and-stick way of rewarding good behaviour and punishing bad, they will struggle to reach all of their players. Some will react to that type of motivation, but others will not. As Drs. Laura Smith and Charles Elliott say in Child Psychology& Development for Dummies, “What’s rewarding for one child may not be for another.”
In this particular example, I should have realised that this athlete was playing baseball for the first time and there are some things that he hasn't already known. It's my job to teach him — and to do so in the best way to make sure that he picks it up. I should expect other players with more experience to know about running the ball out no matter how hard the hit is or whether they think it might be foul (犯规的). But, for a first-time player, this isn’t second nature yet. I’ve found some ways.
24.What does the underlined phrase “got on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Excused. B.Misunderstood. C.Punished. D.Encouraged.
25.What is the main idea of the second paragraph
A.Youth athletes are the promising generation in sports.
B.Try to be a good baseball player before being a coach.
C.Coaching methods have a great influence on the athletes.
D.More than one way is needed to motivate different youth athletes.
26.What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph
A.The nature of youth athletes. B.The ways to coach first-time athletes.
C.The rules of playing baseball. D.The benefits of being a baseball coach.
27.What does the author’s experience tell us
A.Actions speak louder than words. B.Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.
C.Educate a person depending on his natural ability. D.A thousand-mile journey begins with the first step.
根据上文“I was a little too hard on one of my players.(我对一名球员过于严厉。)”和下文“Technically, I was right to correct the behaviour — we expect our players to run hard to first every time. However, the manner in which I corrected him wasn’t suitable for the player.(从技术层面来说,我纠正他的行为是对的——我们要求球员每次都要全力冲向一垒。但是,我纠正他的方式并不适合这个球员。)”可知,上文提到作者对一名球员过于严厉,下文具体说明原因是他击球后没有跑垒,且作者认为批评这种行为在技术上是对的。由此可推知,got on意为“批评、惩罚”。故选C。
25.主旨大意题。根据第二段“It is the coach’s responsibility to get to know their players and understand what motivates them. Children are not all motivated the same way. If the coach only has one motivational tool in their toolbox, e. g. the carrot-and-stick way of rewarding good behaviour and punishing bad, they will struggle to reach all of their players. Some will react to that type of motivation, but others will not. As Drs. Laura Smith and Charles Elliott say in Child Psychology& Development for Dummies, “What’s rewarding for one child may not be for another.”(了解球员并弄清楚是什么激励着他们,这是教练的责任。
根据最后一段“I should expect other players with more experience to know about running the ball out no matter how hard the hit is or whether they think it might be foul(犯规的). But, for a first-time player, this isn’t second nature yet. I’ve found some ways.( 我应该要求那些更有经验的球员明白,无论击球力度如何,也无论他们认为球是否可能犯规,都要全力冲垒。但是,对于第一次参赛的球员来说,这还不是一种本能。我已经找到了一些方法。)”可知,作者在接下来的一段可能要写指导年轻运动员的方法。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据第一段“coaches should know their players and motivate(激发) them.(教练应该了解自己的球员,并激励他们。)”;第二段“It is the coach’s responsibility to get to know their players and understand what motivates them. Children are not all motivated the same way. (了解球员并弄清楚是什么激励着他们,这是教练的责任。孩子们的激励方式并非千篇一律。)”以及“What’s rewarding for one child may not be for another.(对一个孩子有奖励作用的东西,对另一个孩子可能并非如此。)”
C
You know that short walk to the shops and back It’s about 10 minutes each way and you don’t know if you can be glad to make the trip, but that one short walk could save you from an early death, a new research by Cambridge University shows. In fact, as many as one in 10 early deaths could be prevented if everyone managed at least half the recommended level of physical activity.
Risks of diseases such as heart disease, strokes (中风) — which were responsible for 17.9 million deaths per year in 2019 — and various cancers are all reduced with this simple short walk. This easy lifestyle change was also noted in an earlier study in January, 2023, so you really should give it a go.
By carrying out studies among a total of over 30 million participants, the latest Cambridge research found that just 75 minutes of exercise a week can reduce the risk of cancer by 7%. It was also enough to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular (心血管的) disease by 17%.
Professor James Woodcock from the MRC Epidemiology Unit said, “We know that physical activity, such as walking or cycling, is good for you, especially if you feel it raises your heart rate. But what we’ve found is that there are many benefits to heart health and reducing your risk of cancer even if you can only manage 10 minutes every day.”
It goes without saying that doing the recommended 150 minutes per week is more beneficial than just 75 minutes. Around one in six early deaths would be prevented with the two plus hours of exercise, while 11% of cases of cardiovascular disease and 5% of cases of cancer would be avoided.
So what are you waiting for Boots were made for walking.
28.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The simplicity of a short walk.
B.The reason for people’s death.
C.The benefits of doing exercise.
D.The change in people’s lifestyle.
29.What do Professor James Woodcock’s words mean
A.Walking can always raise people’s heart rate.
B.People need at least 75 minutes’ exercise a day.
C.Physical activity is not that necessary for people.
D.10 minutes’ exercise a day can make a difference.
30.How does the author mainly support his idea in the text
A.By telling stories. B.By listing numbers.
C.By describing the processes. D.By referring to previous researches.
31.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To advise people to exercise. B.To uncover the secrets of health.
C.To remind people of some diseases. D.To compare different ways of exercise.
【答案】28.C 29.D 30.B 31.A
根据文章第二段“Risks of diseases such as heart disease, strokes—which were responsible for 17.9 million deaths per year in 2019—and various cancers are all reduced with this simple short walk. ”(心脏病、中风(2019年每年导致1790万人死亡)和各种癌症等疾病的风险都可以通过这种简单的短途行走来降低。)可推知,第二段主要讲述的是做运动的好处。故选C
29.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中James Woodcock教授的话“We know that physical activity, such as walking or cycling, is good for you, especially if you feel it raises your heart rate. But what we’ve found is that there are many benefits to heart health and reducing your risk of cancer even if you can only manage 10 minutes every day.”(我们知道,像走路或骑自行车这样的体育活动对你有好处,特别是如果你觉得它能提高你的心率。
根据文章第二段“Risks of diseases such as heart disease, strokes—which were responsible for 17.9 million deaths per year in 2019—and various cancers are all reduced with this simple short walk. ”(心脏病、中风(2019年每年导致1790万人死亡)和各种癌症等疾病的风险都可以通过这种简单的短途行走来降低。)根据第三段“just 75 minutes of exercise a week can reduce the risk of cancer by 7%. It was also enough to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular(心血管的) disease by 17%.”(每周只需75分钟的锻炼就可以将癌症的风险降低7%。 根据最后一段“It goes without saying that doing the recommended 150 minutes per week is more beneficial than just 75 minutes. Around one in six early deaths would be prevented with the two plus hours of exercise, while 11% of cases of cardiovascular disease and 5% of cases of cancer would be avoided.”(不用说,每周锻炼150分钟比仅仅锻炼75分钟更有益。
文章最后一段“So what are you waiting for Boots were made for walking.”(那你还在等什么? 故选A。
D
Walking or running outdoors, people usually see rubbish all over the ground. Well, some people are doing something about it. They are plogging! “Plogging” began in Sweden. The name connects the Swedish word “plocka” which means to pick up, and the word “jogging” which means to run slowly.
A Swedish man named Erik Ahlstrom, started the movement in 2016. Each day he would ride his bike to work. He became worried about the rubbish and litter he saw on his way. So, he began picking up the rubbish. And that is how plogging was born!
Today, plogging is an official activity, which is becoming more and more popular. People of all ages are welcome to plog and have a good time. Exercise while helping your community.
There are people all around the world doing this. It can also build closer connections in a community and help build those social connections. You get to know your neighbors. You get to feel some social duty when you do this.
Along with cleaning up the environment, there may be another reason to choose plogging instead of jogging. You may get a better physical exercise. One fitness app, Lifesum, records one hour of plogging as burning 288 calories (卡路里). And usual jogging burns about 235 calories.
Now, cities around the world hold plogging events. The goal is to spread the idea that littering is not acceptable. People would think twice before dropping garbage on the ground.
32.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.Rubbish. B.Plogging. C.Jogging. D.Plocka.
33.Which of the following is NOT an advantage of plogging according to the passage
A.Building closer social connections. B.Burning more calories.
C.Reducing traffic accidents. D.Getting a better physical exercise.
34.Why does the author mention the fitness app Lifesum
A.To advertise the app.
B.To compare the plogging and jogging in calorie burning.
C.To explain how to use the app while plogging.
D.To show that plogging is more popular than jogging.
35.What’s the best title for the passage
A.Burning Your Calories B.Helping Your Community
C.Cool Plogging D.Lifesum
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.B 35.C
根据第一段中的“Walking or running outdoors, people usually see rubbish all over the ground. Well, some people are doing something about it. They are plogging!(人们在户外散步或跑步时,通常会看到地上到处都是垃圾。不过,有些人正在为此做些什么。他们正在拾荒慢跑!)”可知,前文提出“地上有垃圾”这一问题,后文“doing something about it”指“针对垃圾问题采取行动”,因此“it”指代前文的“rubbish(垃圾)”。故选A项。
根据文章内容,plogging的优势包括:第四段“It can also build closer connections in a community and help build those social connections.(它还能在社区中建立更紧密的联系,帮助构建社交关系)”(对应A选项);第五段“You may get a better physical exercise. One fitness app, Lifesum, records one hour of plogging as burning 288 calories. And usual jogging burns about 235 calories.(你可能会得到更好的体育锻炼。一款名为Lifesum的健身应用记录显示,一小时的拾荒慢跑能燃烧288卡路里,而普通慢跑约燃烧235卡路里)”(对应B、D选项)。C选项“Reducing traffic accidents(减少交通事故)”在文中未提及,不属于plogging的优势。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“You may get a better physical exercise. One fitness app, Lifesum, records one hour of plogging as burning 288 calories. And usual jogging burns about 235 calories.(你可能会得到更好的体育锻炼。

Tips for Time Management
Often, the biggest challenge students face is juggling competing demands for time. It is especially important to be realistic about all these demands. 36
Treat School Like a Job.
If students are registered full-time, school is their primary job. 37 This still leaves 16 hours on each of those days for sleep, sports, clubs, cultural, social, and other activities.
Spend Time on Each Course Every Week.
Students should prepare for and attend all their classes. 38 They should work on their courses regularly, at a time when their concentration is best and in a place where they won't be distracted.
39
Successful students often develop a plan to increase the likelihood that their goals are realized. A goal in itself is not sufficient. Some tools available at the Student Development Center to help students plan include: * Term calendars; Weekly planners.
Seek Out Support Services.
Students need to take responsibility for their learning but this does not mean doing everything on their own. 40 They should also learn about the different student services and make good use of them.
A.Plan Each Week and Term.

36.根据上文“Often, the biggest challenge students face is juggling competing demands for time. It is especially important to be realistic about all these demands.(通常,学生面临的最大挑战是如何平衡对时间的不同需求。尤其重要的是,对所有这些要求都要现实)”结合后文介绍了学生管理时间的四条建议,可知C选项“如果你正在为时间管理而挣扎,请继续读下去”符合语境,故选C。

40.根据上文“Students need to take responsibility for their learning but this does not mean doing everything on their own.

Jacky was a high school student who often felt pressured by his classmates’ fantastic clothes and expensive shoes. One Monday morning, he arrived at school wearing a new pair of sneakers (运动鞋) he’d saved up for months. “Look at Jacky’s shoes!” someone shouted, and a group of boys came to examine the brand. Jacky’s face turned red with pride.
During lunch break, Jacky heard two girls talking, “Did you see Diana’s new handbag It must cost a fortune!” He looked at his own bag, a simple cloth one his mother had made. Suddenly, he didn’t want to eat anything. That evening, he begged his parents for a designer bag, but they gently refused, explaining money should be spent on more important things.
The next day, Jacky’s English teacher, Mrs Shirley, noticed his upset. After class, she pulled him aside and said, “I’ve observed (观察) you these days. Material things can bring short-term happiness, but it isn’t true happiness.” She showed him a photo of herself as a student, wearing a patched-up coat but holding a medal for winning a national writing competition. “This coat was my favorite because it kept me warm when I wrote,” she smiled. “Why not spend more time on meaningful things The English Speech Contest is coming.” she added.
Jacky was silent. That night, he lay in bed, staring at his sneakers. He thought about the way Mrs Shirley’s eyes widened when she shared her own experiences.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The next morning, Jacky made a decision. He put on his old schoolbag made by his mother and left the new sneakers in the closet. Instead of focusing on material things, he threw himself into preparing for the English Speech Contest. He spent hours reading books, writing his speech, and practicing in front of the mirror. Whenever he felt tempted to envy his classmates’ fancy items, he thought of Mrs Shirley’s words and the photo of herself in the patched-up coat. He realized that true value came from within, not from what he owned.
Weeks later, Jacky stood on the school stage, holding a medal. He had won first place in the English Speech Contest. As he looked out at the audience, he saw Mrs Shirley smiling proudly. Jacky’s heart was filled with a sense of achievement that no pair of sneakers or designer bag could ever bring. He realized that the happiness from personal growth and meaningful accomplishments was far more lasting and fulfilling. From that day on, he never felt pressured by his classmates’ possessions again. Instead, he focused on pursuing his passions, and becoming the best version of himself.
