Good friends and good physical health may be even more closely linked than previously thought, new research has found. Researchers discovered that positive social experiences impact not only a person’s stress level and ability to cope, but also markers of physical health, according to a study published Monday in the journal Society for Personality and Social Psychology.
The study followed more than 4,000 people over three weeks as they completed check-ins every three days on their smartphones or smartwatches regarding their positive and negative experiences with their closest social relationships, as well as assessments of their blood pressure, heart rate, stress and coping. Having more positive experiences in social relationships was generally associated with better coping, lower stress and lower blood pressure, according to the study.
But having social relationships which bounce between good and bad often can be unhelpful. When there is a lot of volatility, the negative experiences seemed to have a bigger impact on a person than the positive, said lead study author Brian Don of the University of Auckland.
Then, how to build good social relationships Adam Smiley Poswolsky, a workplace belonging expert, suggests starting small. Text a friend that you haven’t talked to in a long time, meet one new person a month, host a dinner party, or join a class. “If you do just one thing, make a list of five people in your life that you care about, and give one of them a phone call,” Poswolsky added.
There might not be just one definition of a good friendship, but most strong relationships share some similar qualities, he said. They tend to prioritize laughter, joy, excitement, courage, and non-judgmental support. And good friendships are often two people helping each other become better versions of themselves, he added. “You know someone is a true friend when they have your back when you’re sick, when you lose your job, when you make a mistake, when you’re stressed, when you’re sad,” Poswolsky said.
How was the study carried out
By doing regular check-ins on devices.
By following the participants for three days.
By interviewing the closest friends of participants.
By monitoring the health conditions of participants.
What does the underlined word “volatility” in paragraph 3 mean
pressure. B. changeability. C. association. D. certainty.
Which statement will Poswolsky probably agree with
Friendship is about being always available.
Friendship begins with tiny moments of connection.
Friendship is based on shared interests and hobbies.
Friendship means always having positive interactions.
Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from
A questionnaire survey. B. A personal diary.
C. A news report. D. A biology textbook.

I took a trip to visit New York with my dad after graduating from high school. One of the places on his list for us to visit was a “rare violin shop”. We made our way down the crowded streets and stopped in front of a tall building.
This building was not what I had pictured. I’d been imagining a street-level shop, open to the public, with some interesting and older violins on display. As we walked inside, we were greeted by a receptionist who asked if we had an appointment, since they were by appointment only. I wanted the ground to swallow me whole and decided to give up the visit. However, my dad eagerly told her, “No, we didn’t but, my daughter plays the violin with her high school orchestra. And we would love to just pop inside and browse! Don’t mind us!”
The receptionist gave him an odd look but excused herself to talk to a well-dressed man, who told us that since he had no other appointments right now, he would love to give us a tour.
The starting price for a violin here, we found out, was 10 thousand dollars. He showed us around a very private-feeling and swanky-looking condo (奢华的工作间) , pointing out a room where he casually mentioned he would chat with Joshua Bell when he came by. My jaw was on the floor the entire time.
At the end, the man picked up a Stradivarius and asked me to play a string while he held it. And he triumphantly said, “There! Now you’ve played a Stradivarius.”
I don’t remember the man’s name, but meeting him is a real stroke of luck for me and I’m grateful that he decided to show a no-appointment, non-customer visitor around. His warm behavior helped inspire me to continue pursuing my instrument after high school!
What kind of violin shop had the author expected to visit
tall and magnificent. B. mysterious and odd.
C. high-end and professional. D. popular and fascinating.
29. How did the author feel after being greeted by a receptionist
A. proud. B. guilty. C. embarrassed. D. depressed.
30. According to Paragraph 4, what might Joshua Bell be
A. A celebrity. B. A receptionist. C. A salesman. D. A shopkeeper.
31. What can be concluded from the passage
A. The shop overprices its customers. B. Stradivarius is a mass-market brand.
C. The author enjoys her visit to the shop. D. The well-dressed man is a great violinist.
D
When people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect (忽视) balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your age.
Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too.
Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men.
Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by the middle-aged group were typically related to health problems and physical changes.
Many factors can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes, brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly on your balance will result in increased instability.
“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter.
What role does a good balance play in our lives
It enables us to build a perfect shape.
It helps us live a healthy and long life.
It protects us from getting seriously sick.
It has the power to make us look young.
How does the author show the research results
By having a discussion. B. By following the time order.
C. By giving a list of figures. D. By raising questions.
34. In which situation are young adults likely to fall down
A. When joining in a sport. B. When a health problem comes up.
C. When working regularly. D. When a physical change appears.
35. What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said
A. We are naturally born with balance.
B. We should manage our body properly.
C. Our body is used to working in its own way.
D. We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often.
第二节 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Studies have shown that physical activity can improve mental alertness and cognitive function. Your brain works better and you can think more clearly after exercising. 36 If you are looking for a way to boost your studying, try incorporating daily exercise into your routine.
Try light exercise while you study.
A few studies have shown that performing light exercise while studying can help recall of information. These studies found that vigorous exercise while studying may hurt recall because your brain is focused on the workout instead of the information. 37 You can use the stationary bike while you study for at least half an hour, making sure to keep the intensity light.
Exercise at your desk.
You can get your blood pumping at your desk while you study. If you don’t want to leave everything and go for a quick 15-minute stroll, try getting some physical activity in where you are. Do some chair squats at your desk. 38 Hover just above the chair for about 10 seconds. Repeat this 20 times.
Take a walk on breaks.
If you are studying in the library, break up your study sessions with physical activity. 39 You can also do this if you are studying in your dorm or a coffee shop. Taking a break helps refresh yourself and gets blood flowing to the brain, which can help you think and remember better.
40
Consistent daily workouts, integrated with your study and class schedule, are more effective than cramming 150 minutes of physical activity into the weekend. Regular physical activity throughout the week enhances brain function when you need it most — during your study sessions — rather than isolating it to the weekend.
Focus on consistency.
Make the exercise an enjoyable experience.
Stand up from your chair, and then squat down without sitting down.
If you are going to exercise while studying, just make sure to keep it gentle.
Get up and take a fifteen-minute stroll around the building or around campus nearby.
Physical activity also helps boost memory and recall, which is important when studying.
Do low-impact gentle exercises, such as walking or swimming, at least 30 minutes a day.

It was Emily’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.

“That’s not a trip,” Frank shouted loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair workshop.”
“Frank, no interrupting,” said Miss Clare, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I’m glad that Emily shared her experience with us. Go ahead, Emily,” Miss Clare smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But not feeling proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more, Emily just felt embarrassed and dropped her head, saying in a low voice that it was finished. In the hope of not being noticed, the little girl hurriedly back to her desk with a red face.

After school, things went worse. One of the wheels on Emily’s skateboard came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Emily tried to fix her wheel but in vain, during which Miss Clare happened to pass by.
She walked up with a smile, asking, “Why are you sitting here ” Emily lowered her head, tears welling up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it ” Emily nodded, trying to avoid Miss Clare’ eyes.
