Activity 1 Listen and read the sentences aloud. Pay
attention to the rhythms.
The rhythm is based on the units of strong and weak forms. We read the stressed units clearly and the unstressed units ones quickly.
1. Time and tide wait for no man.
2. All in his mind is right or flight.
3. I will not make the same mistake again.
4. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
重音(Stress): 指发音时更用力、更响亮、时长更长的音节或单词。
单词重音: 单词中某一音节会被 “突出” 重读。
例:
recommend?/?rek??mend/:重音在第二个音节(?mend);
teacher?/?ti?t??(r)/:重音在第一个音节(?ti?);
多词性单词因重音不同表意有别,如?record(动词 “记录”/r??k??d/,名词 “唱片”/?rek??d/)。

句子中实词(名词、动词、形容词、副词等表意核心词)通常重读,虚词(介词、冠词、连词等功能词)常弱读。
例:She is a 'teacher.
(“teacher” 是实词,重读;“is” “a” 是虚词,弱读);

(“Time” “tide” “wait” “no” “man” 重读,“and” “for” 弱读)。

Watch and think
节奏(Rhythm):“重音计时” 的韵律感
英语是 “重音计时语言”—— 重音之间的时间间隔大致相等,弱读的音节 / 单词会快速带过,以此维持节奏的稳定。
例:I will not make the same mistake again.
重读部分(make / same / mistake / again)间隔均匀;
弱读的 I / will / not / the 快速连读,让句子有 “节拍感”。
