Many inventors have left their marks on history in their own ways. Although there are inventors who you might not know, that doesn’t mean their contributions to science are less significant. Keep reading to learn about some famous inventors.
John Deere
John Deere is best known for being an inventor in the agricultural space. When the blacksmith noticed he was often making the same repairs to wood and cast-iron plows used by farmers, he began experimenting with more durable plow designs, which he then sold to local farmers. His steel plows exploded in popularity among many farmers, with Deere’s company (also called John Deere) producing 1,600 plows in 1850. That same year, the company started producing other tools in addition to plows.
Charles Babbage
If you’re reading this on a computer, you have mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage to thank. Although he didn’t invent the computer as we know it today, his ideas laid the groundwork for modern computers. Because of this, he’s often referred to as “the father of computing”.
Steve Jobs
Along with Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs was an inventor behind Apple Computers. As the now-famous story goes, Jobs and Wozniak started Apple Computers in Jobs’ family’s garage in 1976, and the work they did there made computers more accessible and more affordable for consumers. Jobs left Apple in 1985, but he returned in 1997 and revitalized the company, leading to the creation of products like the iPod and iPhone.
Joy Mangano
If you’ve ever used a Miracle Mop, you have Joy Mangano to thank. The 67-year-old created the innovative cleaning tool in 1990, which she marketed and sold herself. A couple of years after inventing the device, she appeared on QVC to sell it, where more than 18,000 mops were sold within a half hour. In addition to the Miracle Mop, Mangano is the creator of Rolykit, Huggable Hangers, and Forever Fragrant.
21. What inspired John Deere to invent steel plows

Wayne and Catherine are a couple. They met in 1987 and moved to Tofino, a village with a beautiful landscape on Vancouver Island, Canada, to make a living as artists. As tourism in the place boomed, their rent increased.
Soon, the couple were unable to afford their rent anymore. So they built themselves a floating home on the west coast of Vancouver Island. They called it Freedom Cove and have lived there for the past 24 years.
Freedom Cove is only accessible by boat. The whole house is always moving with the flow of the tides. The front gate of the structure is made of two whale ribs. In the living room, there is a hole in the floor. Wayne can catch fish from his couch. There is also a large garden. The couple grow almost all the food they eat by themselves.
Wayne and Catherine say that they are not there to isolate themselves. They use Facebook and watch television like most people do.
Catherine hopes their home will inspire people to think about a different way to live. “We want to encourage people to follow their own dream,” she adds, “whatever that is.”

Mars is a challenging place for humans to live due to its extreme cold and lack of basic necessities like oxygen. Given our goal to send humans there, and considering the high cost of transporting supplies from Earth, it is a problem that needs solving.
NASA has already demonstrated the possibility of producing oxygen on Mars with the MOXIE experiment brought over by the Perseverance rover. Recently, a Chinese research team developed an AI chemist, demonstrating the potential to produce oxygen on Mars using only materials found on the Red Planet.
Since the AI operated on Earth, it did not directly use Martian soil but instead analyzed Martian meteorites (陨石). It examined the composition of five Martian meteorite types and identified substances that could generate oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts (催化剂). These catalysts are envisioned to split water into oxygen using solar energy. The AI then processed these meteorite materials for testing.
The AI chemist found 3,764,376 potential formulas (配方) for the catalyst and worked out the best one in just two months. For a single human, this would have taken thousands of years of labor to accomplish. The resulting catalyst was excellent. Researchers report that it could operate steadily for over 550,000 seconds — almost 6 days and 9 hours — with a stable electric current density. The team also tested it at below-freezing temperatures, consistent with temperatures found on Mars, with no apparent decline.
“In the future, humans can establish an oxygen factory on Mars with the assistance of AI chemistry,” Professor Jiang Jun, one of the three team leaders, said in a statement. “This breakthrough technology brings us one step closer to achieving our dream of living on Mars.”
The team is now looking to apply the AI chemist to other challenges in chemical discovery. It’s clear that AI holds the potential to revolutionize the way we address complex problems and pave the way toward a more sustainable future.
28. What problem regarding oxygen production on Mars did the Chinese team aim to address
A. The transportation of equipment. B. The development of power plants.
C. Ways to source raw materials. D. Ways to control experimental conditions.
29. What part of the research did the AI chemist focus on
A. Extracting water from Martian soil.
B. Analyzing existing catalysts on Mars.
C. Conducting OERs in the Martian environment.
D. Identifying certain chemicals in Martian rocks.
30. What strength of the AI chemist does the author want to stress in paragraph 4
A. Its accuracy. B. Its efficiency. C. Its adaptability. D. Its stability.
31. What does the author think of the future of AI applications
A. Promising. B. Debatable. C. Limited. D. Overestimated.
D
While the idea of living on the moon was once a thing of science fiction, several space agencies including NASA and Roscosmos are racing to make it a reality. Now, one scientist has revealed what he thinks the lunar cities could look like in the next 150 years, in a project named “Moontopia”.
Professor Lewis Dartnell, a science communication expert at the University of Westminster, has teamed up with Hillarys to bring his vision to light. He said: “As our understanding of space advances, the opportunity to start a new world becomes ever more possible. Moving home or to another country is already incredibly exciting, imagine what it would be like to move to an entirely different environment. The challenges and problems would be new and hard but the mind boggles at what the human race could achieve if we take this next step.”
Professor Dartnell predicts that homes in Moontopia will be built in lava tubes, and that settlers will travel around using bikes or on foot. Moontopia would also include an airlock that would keep the city pressurized, meaning people could walk around freely without spacesuits. The lunar city could have lakes, parks and basketball courts.
While this sounds pretty great so far, if you’re used to eating what you want, when you want it, living in Moontopia could be a struggle. Other key challenges would include adapting to the temperatures on the Moon. In direct sunlight, the temperatures can reach up to 100℃, while at night, they can drop to -170℃! Thankfully, the temperature inside lava tubes would be easily controlled.
While Professor Dartnell’s vision is merely based on predictions, lunar cities could become a reality in the not-so-distant future. In 2016, Russia announced plans to build a human settlement on the Moon by 2030, while NASA plans to establish a lunar outpost in 2028.
32. What do we know about Moontopia from the text
A. Moontopia will be highly liveable.
B. People can travel freely in Moontopia.
C. People can choose whatever to cat in Moontopia.
D. Moontopia is a project about doing research on the moon.
33. What do the underlined words “the mind boggles at” probably mean
A. We may be worried about. B. We may be puzzled at.
C. We may hesitate about. D. We may be amazed at.
34. What conclusion can we draw from the text
A. It is extremely cold in Moontopia.
B. Living on the moon is on its way.
C. Professor Dartnell carried out the research alone.
D. NASA has built a lunar settlement earlier than Russia.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. Finding out whether lunar cities can exist.
B. Exploring the weather condition on the moon.
C. Predicting what lunar cities will be like.
D. Offering the opportunity to move to the moon.

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site (工地). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring (雇佣) ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract (合同) to work a 12-hour shift (轮班). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks (砖块) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why ” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. “I will feel so embarrassed when my classmates look at your hands,” the boy said. “I won’t attend the event.” Catherine felt terrible but couldn’t say anything in her defense.

第一节
There are many scientists who have driven social development, among whom, the one I admire most is Yuan Longping, an outstanding agricultural scientist known as the "father of hybrid rice".
A few decades ago, lack of food was one of the main problems threatening Chinese people. After years of study, Yuan Longping successfully developed the world’s first hybrid rice which dramatically increased rice production. His approach to rice breeding also serves as a solution to food problems around the globe. There is no doubt that his contribution is of great significance.
His story gives me inspiration and motivates me to love science. And I would like to make contributions to it.
第二节
A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. In the distance, he saw a familiar figure in worn-out clothes, covered in dust and sweat, lifted heavy bricks with her weathered hands at the construction site. As he drew closer, he realized it was his mother, Catherine. Catherine tirelessly moved heavy bricks with her ugly and rough hands under the scorching sun. Her face was covered in sweat, and she didn't even have time to wipe it off as she rushed back and forth, working tirelessly. Peter stood there in shock, unable to utter a single word. Meanwhile, a wave of guilt and regret flooded over him. He shouldn’t have said those hurtful words.
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. Peter couldn't shake off the guilt and regret for his hurtful words towards his mother. He knew he had to make things right and apologize to her. The moment Catherine stepped into the house from work, Peter rushed up to her, gently took her hands in his and held them tightly. “Mom, I’m sorry” he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes, “I didn’t understand then, but now I see how hard you work for us. Your hands may be rough, but they are the most beautiful hands in the world because they care for us.” Tears welled up in Catherine’s eyes as she embraced her son, a wave of happiness washing over her. From that day on, Peter not only attended the school event with his mother but also stood by her side, holding her hands with pride.

Welcome to the Trailside Museum. Here you can learn about the local animals and their natural environments. There are many animal samples we have on show. One of our most famous is a large black bear. They live in this area but are uncommon. Many fishermen see them during certain seasons, but they stay away from humans. Most are seen near the lake. I think you will see some of these birds the most. You have probably seen many of our local birds already. Most people mainly notice little brown birds and the birds with red chests, but there are many different types of both. My favourite bird is actually the one with the colour of the sky. It is a bluebird. Right now it is spring when many animals are awake. There is a lot happening in the forest because of this. However, it is also the wettest season. This is why the north path is closed. Instead, hikers will need to use the higher and older paths through the park.2025-2026学年高二上学期第一次月考卷

范文
