Four National Parks to Add to Your Bucket List
The national parks in the United States are chosen for their natural, historic, and cultural values. Here are some of those kinds of parks.
National Park of American Samoa
Closer to New Zealand than the United States, this park is one of the most remote (偏僻的) national parks. It protects a paleotropical rainforest. A third of the park is oceanic waters, with rich species. Ofu Island in the park has a protected area for snorkeling and diving, along with a famous white-sand beach. Even before official park designation (指定), the city of Hot Springs had become a destination for treating physical problems. In addition to bathing, visitors come to tour high-end bathhouses built in the late Victorian age, many in Spanish style.
Indiana Dunes (沙丘) National Park
With its 15 miles of shore under the forces of Lake Michigan’s wind and waves, Indiana’s only national park has high sands from which visitors can see the skyline of Chicago across the lake. “Singing sands” may occur once a month under the best conditions. Trails lead through the park’s wetlands, dunes, and forests. The park also shelters more than 60 ancient structures.
Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve
This giant park is completely above the Arctic Circle. In the northern park during winter, the sun doesn’t rise for nearly a month and in summer the sun doesn’t set for nearly two months. In summer, the ground gets wet from melted ice, which helps plants grow. By August, the plants turn into bright red and yellow colors. Looking across the vast land can be confusing and big bears in the distance look like nearby little squirrels (松鼠).

Spencer is known for cleaning up old houses across the country and sharing his work on social media. He accidentally found a yard while heading to another job. While clearing the overgrown grassland, Spencer discovered a seriously injured cat hidden deep in the grass. The cat had wounds under its arm and was unable to move. It seemed like it was ready to lie there until it passed away.
Eager to help, Spencer called several places, but none were willing to take the cat in. Finally, he reached out to Edgar and Ivy's Cat Sanctuary (收养所). The sanctuary, specializing in the care of injured, hurt, and abused cats, agreed to take the cat in and provide the necessary medical treatment. Moved by their kindness, Spencer decided to launch a GoFundMe campaign to support the sanctuary, aiming to raise $10,000.
Anissa Beal, the director of Edgar and Ivy’s Cat Sanctuary, told that the sanctuary was to be shut down. He said $10,000 would be life-changing for the sanctuary. The sanctuary had been struggling financially (财政上), with Beal spending half of her income to keep it running.
Spencer's campaign drew a huge public response. Since sharing the GoFundMe link with his millions of followers, over $187,000 has been raised for Edgar and Ivy’s Cat Sanctuary. Additionally, four trucks loaded with donations arrived at the sanctuary, providing much-needed supplies.
“It was a miracle, and it makes me emotional to think that so many people could care about us and this cat and what we' re doing,” Beal expressed. “This is beyond anything I could have ever imagined.”
In return for Spencer's support, Beal offered him the opportunity to name a new building at the sanctuary. Rather than naming it after himself, Spence r chose to honor the community that made the sanctuary's future possible.
4. How was the cat when it was found?
A. Blind and deaf. B. Unable to eat. C. Badly injured. D. Safe and sound.
5. What was Spencer's immediate action after finding the cat?

A. To surprise him. B. To thank him.
C. To touch him. D. To praise him.

The conditions for some of extreme fires in recent years have become between 3 and 20 times globally. Record-breaking fires burned in Canada and turned skies far away in New York orange and grey. The largest recorded fires in the European Union killed 19 people in Greece, and fires in western Amazonia brought dirt y air to local towns. And we just went through a super destructive wildfire season in Athens, Greece, in August 2024.
A major report shows that the amount of carbon emissions (碳排放) from wildfires between 2023 and 2024 was 8.2 billion tons of CO2. Forest wildfires would release more carbon emissions, pose a higher risk to people, and take longer to recover.
There is no single definition of what fire can be an extreme fire. It could be measured by burned area, intensity, or how unusual they are. “At 200 square kilometres, this year’s fires in Greece are much smaller than the 900 square kilometres burned last fire season, but it would count as an extreme fire, because of its closeness to and potential damage to people,” said author Dr Joe McNorton.
When this big wildfire tears through Athens, scientists in Europe are racing to understand why extreme fires like this are becoming more common. They find climate change is the key factor. Warmer temperatures dry out forests, which make a fire more likely to spread. It can also cause more plants to grow, which provides more fuel (燃料) for the fire. Humans also influence fires, like starting them themselves, breaking up the landscape, or how well they fight them.
Dr Joe says the report will both guide preparations for wildfires, and help the world understand the simple fact that fires will keep getting worse until fossil fuels are replaced with renewable energy sources. To tackle the problem, leaders should consider protecting forest boundaries, reducing the amount of natural fuel fire, imposing fire bans on high-risk days, and investing more in early warning prediction systems.
8. How is paragraph 1 developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By discussing solutions. D. By explaining causes.
9. Why was the fire in Greece considered as an extreme fire?
A. It burned a very large area. B. It brought harmful effects.
C. It had much carbon emissions. D. It lasted a long period of time.
10. What mainly causes extreme fires?
A. Size of forests. B. Human behavior. C. Location of fires. D. Climate warming.
11. What does the underlined word “tackle” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Apply for. B. Bring about. C. Deal with. D. Focus on.

Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria (细菌) to repair 18th-century paintings. Bosch, a microbiologist, said that she got the idea for the method while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else’s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to repair artworks.
At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother, Pilar Roig, was struggling to find a good method for repairing 18th-century paintings. The paintings, by Spanish artist Antonio Palomino, sat in Santos Juanes—one of the oldest churches in the city of Valencia. Pilar Roig noted how difficult the repair process at the church was. One reason was the glue (胶水) used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. The glue was nearly impossible to remove completely.
“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean paintings on walls in Italy,” Bosch said. Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church repair. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The $4.46 million project is being financed by local organizations.
To repair, they feed small amounts of the glue that was made from animal collagen (胶原蛋白) to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begin to naturally produce enzymes (酶) to break down the glue. The mother-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel (凝胶), and places it onto the paintings. After about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free.
Bosch’s mother, now 75, noted that in the past, people working on repairing artworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that took hours and damaged the painting. Bosch is now training other scientists to use a different kind of bacteria to clear walls of painted graffiti.
12. How did Bosch find the way to repair old paintings?
A. Her mother inspired her. B. Her doctor instructed her.
C. She tested it out by many experiments. D. She found it when preparing her paper.
13. What made it difficult to repair the old paintings?
A. Not having enough money. B. The history of the churches.
C. The glue that was once used. D. Experience of past failures.
14. What is paragraph 4 centered on?
A. The process of cleaning the paintings.
B. The necessity of repa?ring the paintings.
C. The challenges facing the mother-daughter team.
D. The materials that are used to clean the paintings.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Bacteria Removal Process Is Widely Used in Spain.
B. Spanish Scientist Uses Bacteria to Repair Artworks.
C. Old Artworks Are Likely to Be Repaired with Bacteria.
D Spanish Mother-Daughter Team Discovered A Painting.

Kenneth was born and raised in California. The sun, the beaches, and the friends he’d known since kindergarten were all part of his world. But at the age of 16, everything changed. His parents got new jobs in Ohio, and the family had to move there. It was a difficult decision, as it meant leaving behind everything Kenneth knew and loved.
Along with the move came a new school for Kenneth. He felt upset every time he thought about saying goodbye to his school. He was scared of the change, like the new city, the new school, and the new people he would meet. He didn’t know if he could fit in or if he would be lonely there.
After a long journey across the country, the family arrived and finally settled in Ohio. When it was time to go to his new school, Kenneth’s mind was filled with worries. What if the students were unfriendly and even cold? What if he didn’t make any friends?
The next morning, Kenneth’s parents drove him to school. His heart was beating in his chest as they pulled up to the big brick building. He hugged his mom and dad, took a deep breath, and stepped out of the car. With each step towards the school gate, his anxiety grew. He felt like he was walking into a whole new world.
Kenneth was greeted by a school secretary, who was very friendly. Seeing that Kenneth was nervous and shy, she decided to show Kenneth around the school yard first. Kenneth was led to the modern computer lab, the science lab, and the huge gym with a basketball court where Kenneth imagined trying out for the school team. As they walked around, Kenneth gradually felt the school seemed nice, starting to feel a little better.

Finally, they got to the teaching building and headed for Kenneth’s new classroom, and Kenneth’s heart started racing again. The school secretary led him to the door and gave Kennet h an encouraging smile.

As the day went on, Kenneth found that what he had worried was unnecessary.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Kenneth took a deep breath and entered the classroom. He noticed that all eyes were on him as he walked in. It was quiet for a moment and he felt his face got hot. Trying to calm himself down, he knew he was supposed to introduce himself. Though his voice was shaky, Kenneth managed to tell them a little about himself. After the introduction, the class clapped and cheered warmly and they seemed happy to have him there, which was quite a surprise and comfort for Kenneth. He became a little less nervous, and he started to feel like maybe he could make friends here.
As the day went on, Kenneth found that what he had worried was unnecessary. The classes were interesting, and the teachers were helpful. During the breaks, he was surrounded by the enthusiastic classmates and they chatted about their interests and had fun together. After school, some of the students invited him to play basketball in the school gym. The day ended up with surprise. Kenneth realized that change wasn’t always bad. It was scary at first, but it had led him to new experiences and friendships. He learned that he was stronger than he thought and that he could adapt to new situations.
