Whether it’s a happy face, a little heart or a thumbs-up, emojis (表情符号) are a key part of how people all over the world communicate in messages and online. In fact, 10 billion of them are sent every day!
The first emojis were created in 1999 by a Japanese designer named Shigetaka Kurita. His first set had 176 simple symbols, but these days we have more than 3500 different emojis to choose from!
Even though there are so many emojis, some emojis are used more often than others. To find out which emojis are the most popular, technology company Baidu Japan looked at emoji use in 16 countries-including Japan, the US, the UK and France-during the first half of 2025.
Baidu Japan found that the crying face was the most-used emoji overall. People use it to show many strong feelings-not just sadness, but also pride, happiness and even laughter. And according to Baidu Japan’s data (数据), the crying face was the most popular emoji in 12 out of the 16 countries it looked at.
In fact, the top emojis tend to be quite similar in most countries, with crying faces and laughing faces appearing again and again.
In many countries, people use hearts to show love for family or friends. However, cultural differences affect emoji use. In Japan, hearts are mostly used for romantic love, so people choose other emojis to show how they feel.
So while we might all use emojis, the way we use them can be quite different!
Top emoji by country
Why did Baidu Japan study emojis

①Do you often order take-out food Have you ever tried a “take-out PE class” This new kind of service was popular during this summer vacation.
②To have a “take-out PE class”, you order it on social media. The coach will then come with all the things needed for the exercise. The classes include simple fitness training and sports like basketball and tennis. One-on-one lessons usually cost 200 to 400 yuan, Guangming Daily reported.
③ “It’s so convenient, said a woman surnamed Wang whose child is in 3rd grade. She used to spend an hour taking her child to the gym. “Now, the coach comes to the open area of our neighborhood, and I can watch from the balcony,” she said.
④ “Take-out PE classes” are not only convenient, but also helpful. “Before, my child often fell down when jumping rope. After three weeks of classes, he improved from 120 jumps a minute to 160,” Wang said. The coach makes a special plan for each child. This is more helpful than big classes.
⑤But this new service also has problems. The Paper reported that most classes take place in neighborhood squares or parks. The ground is often too hard for running and jumping. In addition, many people walk by, and sometimes cars pass through. This can be dangerous.
⑥Many parents who order the classes have children preparing for high school entrance exams. This is an “exam-first” way of thinking, which has changed the true meaning of exercise, noted Xinhua.
“Take-out PE class” is different from normal PE classes mainly in ________.

C. the types of sports D. the teaching methods

A. “Take-out PE classes” have many problems.
B. Exercise is important no matter the purpose.
C. Students should exercise for their own fitness.
D. “Take-out PE classes” change the way students exercise.

“Let’s-a go! Wahoo!” Sept 13 marked the 40th anniversary of the game Super Mario Bros..
With his red hat and famous mustache, the Italian plumber (水管工人) Mario first appeared in the game Donkey Kong (1981). Later in 1985, he became famous with Super Mario Bros.
In this game, the Mushroom Kingdom is taken over by King Koopa. With his helpers, he takes Princess Peach away. Mario and his brother Luigi, both plumbers, hear about what has happened and set off to help.
Though Mario is a hero in the famous game, he still finds time for many hobbies in the game series and spin-offs. He plays tennis, soccer, baseball and basketball. He is also a race car driver, an Olympic athlete and a doctor. On top of all this, he throws a lot of house parties. In real life, no one could do all of these things. That’s why Mario has won the hearts of millions of fans around the world.
Mario’s actions in the game can be easily understood by everyone. As Mario’s creator, Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, explained in an NPR interview in 2015, “Everyone is afraid of falling from a great height. If there is a gap that you have to cross, everyone is going to try to run to jump across...that’s what really resonated with people.”
Thanks to these features (特征) Mario has become an international symbol of gaming. Since the start of Super Mario Bros, he has appeared in more than 200 games. His adventures now reach far beyond the screen: from toys and trading cards to movies and even theme parks-showing once again that he truly is “number one”.
Fun facts about Mario
Mario’s love of jumping and climbing comes from Shigeru Miyamoto’s own childhood fun with building blocks.
— Back in the 1980s, it was much harder to animate (把······制成动画) movements of a character’s mouth or hair. So, Mario was given a mustache and a hat because it was easier.
— Mario isn’t always the good guy. In the 1982 game Donkey Kong Junior, Mario is bad. He puts Donkey Kong in a cage, and the ape’s son must save him.
Rewards (奖励) keep you playing
Have you ever wondered why you can’t stop playing games such as Super Mario It’s not magic, but psychology. Since our brains love rewards the people who create games put gifts at different stages to keep people interested. These gifts come in two types: some you get right away, or others you must work hard for. The easy ones might be offered when you level up or find things, while the harder ones could be earned by completing difficult tasks. Mixing these gifts makes the game fun and exciting, giving players quick wins and big goals to reach for.
Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
Mario first became famous in the game Donkey Kong in 1981.
Mario only works as a plumber and never has other roles in games.
Shigeru Miyamoto got the idea of Mario’s jumping from his childhood building block fun.
Mario has always been the good guy in all Mario-related games.

A. The knowledge of how to level up in different games.
B. The rule of collecting all gifts to finish a game quickly.
C. The skill of creating interesting games like Super Mario.
D. The study of how the mind works and influences behavior.
55. Why was Mario given a mustache and a hat in the 1980s
A. Because they made Mario look more like a real plumber.
B. Because these features were popular among game players at that time.
C. Because Shigeru Miyamoto thought they could show Mario’s bravery.
D. Because it was harder to animate the movements of a character’s mouth or hair then.
56. What can we learn from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5
A. Mario has appeared in more than 300 games since 1985.
B. Mario’s easy-to-understand actions help him win many fans.
C. Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto once worked as a plumber.
D. Mario’s hobbies in games are the same as those of real people.

Uncle Tom sang a song about angels and Heaven with Eva in the garden.
“Uncle Tom, sometimes I see those spirits,” said Eva. “They come to me in my sleep. I’m going there.” Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “To the bright spirits.”
Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well, she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin.
Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell Eva’s father, St Clare.
“Stop that!” St Clare said. “Don’t you see that the child is only growing up It’s what happens to children of her age.”
“But she has that cough!”
“That’s nothing. Maybe she has a little cold,” St Clare said.
Eva’s health got even worse. She became very weak and she could hardly leave the house, so St Clare sent her to the hospital.
In a week or two, it seemed that Eva’s health improved greatly. St Clare was happy and he was sure Eva would get better. But Miss Ophelia was not so sure, and neither was Eva herself. One afternoon, when St Care called Eva to give her a present, “Papa, I am going to leave you soon.” said Eva, and she started crying.
“Oh, my dear!” said St Clare, “you’re just tired and a little weak because of the illness. You will be perfectly fine soon.”
“No, Papa” said Eva, “I won’t get better. I am not sad. I’m sorry for you, Papa, and my friends, but I want to go!”
“Why do you want to go Are you unhappy, Eva ”
“Oh, I feel sad for our slaves (奴隶): they are all good and kind to me. I wish, Papa, they were all free.”
“Don’t you think we treat them well ” said St Clare.
“But what will happen to them if anything happens to you There are very few men like you, Papa. Some people buy the husbands but not the wives, some people buy the mothers and sell the children. What terrible things people do! Papa, isn’t there any way to make all slaves free ”
“Slavery is a very bad thing, but I don’t know what to do about it,” said St Clare. “Promise me that Uncle Tom will be free as soon as I’m asleep,” said Eva.
--Taken from Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Because Uncle Tom was too old to work as a slave.
Because Uncle Tom sang songs with her in the garden.
Because St Clare treated Uncle Tom worse than other slaves.
Because she felt sad for slaves and worried about their future.

七、阅读与回答问题(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Labubu has become one of the most popular toys among Chinese teenagers. This summer, Labubu, a “monster”-looking doll from China with a soft face with large eyes, nine sharp teeth, a furry body and rabbit-like ears has won the hearts of many people around the world.
People line up very early, even before sunrise, in front of Pop Mart stores, which are the only places to buy Labubu. On resale markets, the prices of Labubu dolls have gone up a lot. They are in such high demand (需求) that they made about $1.8 billion last year.
Pop Mart was founded in 2010 by Wang Ning from Henan. Now it has over 400 stores and 2,000 toy machines called roboshops. Because of the popularity of toys like Labubu, Wang Ning became the 10th richest person in China, with $20 billion.
Labubu was created by Kasing Lung, a designer from Hong Kong. It first appeared in a picture book in 2015. Labubu’s look is different from that of traditional cute toys. It has a “bad-boy” look, which many people, especially young people, really like. It’s like Labubu is not trying to be perfect, and that makes it cool.
Another reason for Labubu’s success is the “blind-box” way of selling. When you buy a blind box, you don’t know which Labubu doll you will get inside. This makes it exciting, just like a little game. People want to open more boxes to find their favorite or a rare one. Some rare Labubu dolls are so hard to get that they can be sold for much more money.
Last but not the least, Labubu also works with famous brands and stars. Many stars like Lisa and Rihanna enjoy sharing their photos with Labubu online. These bring more attention to Labubu and make it even mote popular. Amanda Lee, a 26-year-old from Singapore, likes to open Pop Mart’s blind boxes with her coworkers (同事). “It’s just a fun little thing that we get to do together during our lunch breaks to relax.” Lee told Time magazine.
