Have you had trouble getting on or off the underground during the rush hour Many people in big cities face this challenge every day.
During busy times, underground trains can be especially crowded. For newcomers, it can be difficult to get on the overcrowded train. Since they' re not used to it, they often get in others' way. This means it takes everyone longer to get on or off the train.
To help solve this problem, a study has been made, showing annoying behaviors(令人讨厌的行为)when people take the underground. People can learn what they shouldn't do from the study.
The most annoying behavior, named by 66% of the people asked,is not moving away from the doors when other people are trying to get off. People standing near the doors should get off the train for a moment to let others get off and then get back on again. The second most annoying behavior, named by 18% of them, is trying to get on the train before others get off. Other annoying behaviors include pushing, cutting in line, and jumping on the train at the last minute.
Many workers in underground stations suggest passengers be considerate. For example, passengers near the doors should try to make way for others who are getting off. Also, instead of just pushing their way off the underground, passengers who are getting off should say, "Excuse me. Could you please make way I'm getting off." This way, everyone can have a faster and more comfortable ride.

Getting around in a strange place can be challenging, especially if you don't speak the local (当地的) language, so learning some common expressions for public transportation (公共交通) can make your travels much easier.
At train or bus stations, you' ll see two main areas: Departures and Arrivals. The departures board shows where trains and buses leave, while the arrivals board tells people where they arrive. So, if you want to go somewhere from a station, first find the departures board to know where your bus or train will leave. Or, you can simply ask,“Excuse me, where is the train leaving ” to find your train.
To buy a ticket, you can ask the station staff,“Could I have a ticket to ... ” Many stations also have ticket machines, or you can just buy tickets online.
In English-speaking countries, the underground train has different names. In some cities including London, you' ll find it's called the tube, while in others it can be the subway (in America), the underground, or the metro. However, they all mean the same thing.
There is a difference between buses and coaches in English. Buses mean the bus services, while coaches mean those buses traveling much longer distances (距离). If you want to travel from city to city, you should take coaches instead of buses.
When you need help, start with“Excuse me” to ask politely. A more formal (正式的) way to say the same thing is“Pardon me”, but it doesn't get used as much as“Excuse me” in everyday life. These simple phrases will make using public transportation less stressful.
( )56. If a man tells you,“Look at the arrivals board to find your train”, what is wrong with his advice
A. It uses the word“board” wrong.
B. It tells the wrong way to buy a ticket.
C. It mixes up the boards where people find their train.
( )57. In London, you can see this sign. What does“Tube” refer to
A. A bus station's waiting area.
B. A long-distance coach service.
C. The city's underground system.
( )58. Which way is the best for traveling from New York to Washington
A. By subway. B. By coach. C. By bus.
( )59. If the ticket office isn't open at a station, which expression can help you best
A.“Hey, buy a ticket to Boston for me”
B.“Pardon me, where is the train leaving ”
C.“Excuse me, could you show me how to use the ticket machine ”
( )60. Why is the reading written
A. To compare different languages in the world.
B. To tell about how public transportation develops abroad.
C. To show some English expressions about public transportation.

For a long time, people around the world have always followed a rule when taking escalators: standing on the right and walking on the left. They see this as a polite tradition because it leaves the left side open for those who want to walk through quickly. Many also believe the habit allows them to do exercise easily by making use of the time on an escalator. However, is this really the best way to ride escalators
Recently, in some subway stations in Beijing, new signs with"yellow footprint" pictures appeared on escalators. These signs tell people to ride escalators by standing side by side.
Experts explain that there are good reasons for giving up the"walking lane(通道)" tradition. To begin with, when most passengers stand on the right side, the weight on the escalator becomes very uneven(不均等的). This uneven weight is a main cause of escalator problems and even breakdowns.
Also, research showed that standing side by side actually saves more time. In 2016,a foreign underground company(公司)did a study at a busy station. Some of the station's escalators are 23 meters high. There were always long lines at the bottom, while much of the left side was unused. Waiting to step onto the escalators one by one wasted lots of time, in fact.
More importantly, walking on escalators can be dangerous sometimes. About 75% of escalator accidents happen because people are moving on them. Because escalators often have higher steps than normal ones, this increases the risk of tripping or falling while people walk on an escalator.
So, while it might seem faster to walk on escalators, standing together is a better way to ride the escalator.
